The article portrays Prof. Rudolf Weigl, a great scientist and a noble man, and his dramatic life. His work contributed to saving lives of millions of people around the world. His vaccine turned out to be exceptional in eliminating typhoid fever. Prof. Weigl’s scientific achievements are presented in comparison with scientific contemporaneous accomplishment, which is helpful in gaining a greater appreciation of the significance of that discovery. The discovery of the vaccine, despite its scientific nature and application in protection of human health, was used by huge rival political and military blocs during the 1st and the 2nd World Wars. The work reveals the consequences of politics in prof. Weigl’s life and scientific activity.
