The article in the layer of its objectives deals with the activity of non-governmental organizations (NGO) in participatory procedures in the revitalization of urban centers, in particular in selected cities of the GZM Metropolis (Poland, Silesian voivodeship). The region of upper Silesia and the GZM metropolis is an area particularly affected by the stigma specific to post-industrial cities. It struggles not only with the problem of the urgent need for architectural revitalization, but also with social revitalization. There is no doubt, that flexibility and adaptation to new challenges posed by modern society is conditioned not only by the legal solutions themselves, but also by stimulating the social tissue to take measures to remedy further degradation. Human capital in connection with the concept of New Public Management seems to be an adequate solution. Non-governmental organizations, in the context of participation in revitalization, are analyzed from the consultant, contractor, beneficiary, as well as the group influencing the shape of revitalization projects point of view. The article characterizes categories relating to revitalization, defines the importance of non-governmental organizations in contemporary policies and programs defining development (including in territorial terms), also includes a preliminary empirical study to identify the actual role, that selected cities of GZM entrust to non-governmental organizations in revitalization processes. Methodically, the article was based on the tools of secondary data analysis (desk research), statistical analysis, questionnaire method conducted with the technique of individual direct interview (IDI).

Artykuł w warstwie celów traktuje o wpływie działalności organizacji pozarządowych (ang. NGO – non-government organization) na procesy rewitalizacji ośrodków miejskich, w szczególności na terenie wybranych miast Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowskiej Metropolii (GZM). Organizacje pozarządowe, w kontekście procedur partycypacyjnych w rewitalizacji, analizowane są z punktu widzenia konsultanta, wykonawcy, beneficjenta, a także grupy wpływu na kształt przedsięwzięć rewitalizacyjnych. Artykuł charakteryzuje kategorie odnoszące się do rewitalizacji, określa znaczenie organizacji pozarządowych we współczesnych rozstrzygnięciach polityk i programów definiujących rozwój (w tym w ujęciu terytorialnym), zawiera również wstępne badanie empiryczne, służące rozpoznaniu rzeczywistej roli, jaką wybrane miasta GZM powierzają organizacjom pozarządowym w procesach rewitalizacji. Metodycznie artykuł oparto na narzędziach analizy danych wtórnych (desk research), analizie statystycznej oraz metodzie kwestionariuszowej prowadzonej techniką indywidualnego wywiadu bezpośredniego (IDI).
