The paper deals with the problem of the evolution of Polish syntax in the Old Polish period (in the written variety of the language). The object of research are sentences with temporal dependent clauses which occur in court oaths from Greater Poland. There are two reasons to focus on such an isolated object. Creating structurally coherent dependent clauses is a difficult operation, and the more so as such sentences only function in a very limited range in the spoken language; thus, it is interesting to observe the difficulties with which they arise. The choice of material representing the official/legal language, results from the fact that writers are quite independent in expressing more or less intricate contents and mould them in various ways, including that of dependent clauses. The matter is even more interesting, as the substantial repeatability of the content does not entail formal schematism. Sentences are rather diverse with regard to both content and form, which mirrors the writers’ struggle to portion the content (later oaths are richer content-wise), and to associate it with an adequate form.
