In the article, in the part concerning theoret­ical issues, the definitions, goals and tools of the social economy and its role in the devel­opment of civil society are presented. In the decrypted   part however selected examples of the activities of social economy entities in Poland were given. The essence of a social en­terprise and a social cooperative was charac­terized. The idea of corporate social respon­sibility has also been explained. The study highlights the growing importance of the social economy in the 21st century in all market economy countries as an expres­sion of the strengthening of participatory de­mocracy and civil society.

W artykule, w części dotyczącej zagadnień teoretycznych przedstawiono definicje, cele i narzędzia gospodarki społecznej i jej rolę w rozwoju społeczeństwa obywatelskiego. W części opisowej natomiast podano wy­brane formy i przykłady działalności pod­miotów gospodarki społecznej w Polsce. Scharakteryzowano istotę przedsiębiorstwa społecznego i spółdzielni socjalnej. Przybli­żono również ideę społecznej odpowiedzial­ność biznesu. W opracowaniu podkreśla się rosnące w XXI wieku, znaczenie gospodarki społecznej we wszystkich krajach o gospo­darce rynkowej jako wyraz umacniania się demokracji uczestniczącej i społeczeństwa obywatelskiego.
