The problem of threats and benefits, as well as challenges and opportunities for the SME sector in the era of intensified globalization processes in the contemporary world is a vital issue and an area for scientific research. This publication characterizes the results of this sector enterprises activity in Poland in the years 2004-2007 and shows opportunities for their operation on the international arena through presenting. among others, their share in export sales and cooperation with overseas companies. The paper also presents relevant conclusions related to the development of enterprises in Poland, with special consideration given to the SME sector.

W publikacji podjęto temat konkurencyjności, ze wskazaniem na brak jednej powszechnie akceptowanej definicji tego pojęcia i na wieloznaczność rozumienia tego terminu. Wskazano na wystę-pujące poziomy konkurencyjności oraz różne miary i metody jej oceny z punktu widzenia tych pozio-mów, w tym przedsiębiorstw i gospodarki narodowej. W ostatniej części publikacji podjęto próbę oceny konkurencyjności gospodarki Polski i przedsiębiorstw w niej funkcjonujących.

The publication discusses the topic of competitiveness as such, pointing that a one definition of this notion which could be accepted in economics has not been worked out yet. The problem of ambiguity in understanding the term of "competitiveness" is also presented. The article also shows different levels of competitiveness as well as different ways of measuring and methods of its as-sessment taking into consideration these levels, including enterprises and the national economy. In the last part of the publication authors attempt to asses the competitiveness of the Polish economy and the enterprises which function within this economy.

During the systemic transformation in Poland, restructuring has been treated as a tool of enterprise's adjustment to the market economy principles. Nowadays, after nearly 20 years of transformation processes being in progress, we should understand restructuring as a tool of the enterprise's effective growth and improved efficiency of accomplishing its objectives. From the enterprise's owners' point of view the main target is to create value of enterprise. In this way, restructuring is also a tool of the enterprise's value creation. Only efficient enterprises provide their owners with a satisfactory return on invested capital rate, which can be viewed as an attractive form of investment and which may offer favorable conditions for further development.

W warunkach transformacji systemowej w Polsce restrukturyzacja była postrzegana przede wszystkim jako narzędzie służące przystosowaniu przedsiębiorstwa do wymogów gospodarki rynkowej. Obecnie, po blisko 20 latach realizacji procesu transformacji, restrukturyzacja staje się narzędziem wzrostu efektywności przedsiębiorstwa oraz narzędziem realizacji jego celów. Z punktu widzenia właścicieli przedsiębiorstwa głównym celem jest kreowanie jego wartości. W ten sposób restrukturyzacja staje się także narzędziem kreowania wartości przedsiębiorstwa. Tylko bowiem przedsiębiorstwa efektywne, gwarantujące swoim właścicielom uzyskiwanie satysfakcjonujących ich stóp zwrotu z zainwestowanego kapitału, mogą być postrzegane jako atrakcyjna forma inwestycji, a tym samym posiadać korzystne warunki dla dalszego rozwoju.
