On the basis of a microhistorical approach, the general course of settlement of the region and the colonial efforts of the Russian administration (public, private) to create settlements under Russian fortresses are considered. An analysis of population registration documents indicates a key influence on the population of Zaporozhye in the 1740s - 1760s. namely the Zaporizhzhya elite, and not Russian fortresses. Attempts by the Russian administration to besiege settlements under fortresses and expand their power on Zaporizhzhya subjects were unsuccessful.

Korzystając z podejścia mikrohistorycznego, autor bada proces zaludnienia terenów Zaporoża I wysiłki lokalnej administracji rosyjskiej (urzędowe i prywatne), skierowani na utworzenie slobod przy fortecach rosyjskich na Zaporożu. Dokumenty, zawierające informacje o ludności miejscowej, świadczą, że głowny wpływ na załudnienie teritorium Zaporoża w latach 40.-60. XVIII wieku wywarła elita Wojska Zaporozkiego, a nie system fortec rosyjskich, wprowadzony w czasach wojny rosyjsko-tureckiej 1735-1739. Sproby rosjan, skierowane na utworzenie wsi przy fortecach oraz rozpowszechnienia swojej władzy na poddanych Wojska Zaporozkiego nie były skuteczne.
