In the works of Mykola Yevshan (1890–1919), the leading critic of early Ukrainianmodernism, the issue of Russian literature is of particular significance. An analysis of Yevshan’s papers shows that he referred both to the literature and philosophical thought of Western Europe as well as to Russian literary tradition. He particularly esteemed the achievements of Russian realism, considering them as having universal and ageless values. He hoped to find the answers to questions of an existential and social nature which troubled modernists in the works of the greatest Russian writers, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Leo Tolstoy.

W artykule na materiale literacko-krytycznych wypowiedzi autorów ukraińskich końca XIX - początku XX wieku, m. in. Iwana Franki, Mykoły Jewszana, Dmyt ra Doncowa oraz innych, próbie analizy poddana została recepcja Polski rozpatrywanej jako podstawa stosunków polsko-ukraińskich. Rozpatrywana jest reakcja na w/w jako na złożoną konstrukcję dyskursywną, w której odnotowany został ruch poszczególnych elementów składowych, spowodowany kształtowaniem się nacji ukraińskiej.

The article focuses on the perception of Poland as the basis of Ukrainian-Polish relations issued by literary critical reports made by the Ukrainian authors in the ХIХth - beginning of the ХХth century, such as I. Franko, M. Evshan, D. Dontsov, and the others. A certain reaction caused by Ukrainian national formation has been observed.

The present paper is devoted to the meaning of comparative aspects in literary criticism works by the Ukrainian poet Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913). It stresses the significant role that the author herself, along with her erudition and character traits, plays in her comparative studies. In the discussion, it is observed that the research methods used by Lesya Ukrainka resemble contemporary comparative studies. It is also shown how the author draws analogies and brings out contrasts. The paper contains an analysis of comparative optics, which allows presenting the profound contexts of the cultures and literatures of both Western Europe, as well as those typical of the Central and Eastern parts of the continent, which are characteristics for Lesya Ukrainka’s literary criticism.

Niniejszy artykuł jest poświęcony znaczeniu komparatywnych aspektów w krytyczno-literackiej twórczości ukraińskiej poetki Łesi Ukrainki (1871-1913). Zaznaczono przy tym istotną rolę, którą w dociekaniach komparatywnych odgrywa sama autorka, jej erudycja oraz cechy charakteru. W przeprowadzonych badaniach zauważono, że wykorzystane przez Łesię Ukrainkę metody badawcze są zbliżone do współczesnych studiów porównawczych, pokazano także, w jaki sposób autorka tworzy analogie i wywodzi kontrasty. Artykuł zawiera analizę optyki komparatywnej, co pozwala odsłonić charakterystyczne dla krytyki literackiej Łesi Ukrainki głębokie konteksty kultur i literatur zarówno zachodnioeuropejskich, jak i należących do regionu Środkowej i Wschodniej Europy.

This article describes the attitude of Ukrainian authors of the late 19th andearly 20th century (Ivan Franko, Mykola Yevshan, Mykyta Sryblyans’kyi and others) toward the manifestations of tragedy in Russian literature of the 19th century. The primary focus is on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s anthropological discoveries, Nikolai Gogol’s existentialism and Leo Tolstoy’s psychologism. The ideas of these writers were considered conformable to the perception of the fin-de-siècle world with its tragic background and helped Ukrainian writers form their own philosophical and aesthetic views. Russian classicswere studied with regard to realistic aesthetics and treated similarly to the classics of antiquity, i.e. as an unchanging value.
