This article is a review of the work Dezorientacje. An Anthology of Polish Queer Literature edited by Alessando Amenta, Tomasz Kaliściak and Błażej Warkocki, which was published in 2021. The anthology is an extensive collection of excerpts from both canonical and marginal works of Polish literature. Representing a variety of themes, authors and genres from the eighteenth century to the present day, the anthology casts a new, unprejudiced light on the historical literary tradition, destabilizing the separatist divisions into center and periphery, high and low, male and female, which have hitherto shaped the canon of Polish literature. Thus Polish readers will find a work without prejudice and without borders, open to additions and new interpretations, but developed on the basis of queer theory and itself queer in its content and methodology of selection. Amenta, Kaliściak, and Warkocki capture the canon with subversive potential, creating an anthology that can be read both as a textbook and as a coherent, multithreaded narrative.

Tekst artykułu stanowi recenzję dzieła Dezorientacje. Antologia polskiej literatury queer pod redakcją Alessandro Amenty, Tomasza Kaliściaka i Błażeja Warkockiego, które ukazało się w 2021 roku. Na antologię składa się obszerny zbiór fragmentów z utworów kanonicznych oraz pozostających na marginesie literatury polskiej. Reprezentacje twórczości różnorodnej pod względem tematyki, twórców i gatunków, rozciągające się czasowo od osiemnastego wieku do współczesności, rzucają nowe, pozbawione uprzedzeń światło na  tradycję historycznoliteracką, destabilizując separatystyczne podziały na centrum- peryferie, wysoki- niski, męski- kobiecy, które dotychczas kształtowały kanon literatury polskiej. Tym samym do rąk polskich czytelników trafia dzieło bez uprzedzeń i bez granic, otwarte na uzupełnienia i dające przestrzeń interpretacji, ale wypracowane na bazie teorii queer i samo, pod względem treści i metodologii doboru utworów, będące queerowym. Amenta, Kaliściak i Warkocki przechwytują kanon z potencjałem wywrotowym, tworząc antologię, którą można czytać zarówno jako podręcznik, jak i spójną, wielowątkową narrację.

The article discusses case study with a focus on the history of the term and its transdisciplinary application, from medicine and sociology, through law, psychiatry, psychology, sexology, and literary studies. The author discusses the differences between case study as a genre (Brigit Lang, Joy Damousi, Alison Lewis, Yiannis Gabriel) and case study as a research strategy (Bent Flyvbjerg, Gerring John, Ryszard Nycz), which has been recently also employed in literary studies. Determining the scope and features of case study is accompanied by an analysis of description as a key tool in formulating “the story of the case.”

Artykuł stanowi opracowanie hasła case study (studium przypadku) ze zwróceniem uwagi na historię terminu i jego transdyscyplinarne zastosowanie: wychodząc od medycyny i socjologii, przez prawo, psychiatrię, psychologię i seksuologię, kończąc na literaturoznawstwie. Autorka stara się zarysować rozróżnienie między studium przypadku jako formą gatunkową (Brigit Lang, Joy Damousi, Alison Lewis, Yiannis Gabriel) a studium przypadku jako strategią badawczą (Bent Flyvbjerg, Gerring John, Ryszard Nycz) – stosowaną od niedawna także w literaturoznawstwie. Wyznaczaniu zakresu oraz cech case study towarzyszy analiza opisu jako kluczowego narzędzia wspierającego przebieg „opowieści o przypadku”.

Językiem miłości, językiem ciała. Djuna Barnes i „Wiek 21” Ewy Kuryluk

The article examines the influence of the avant-garde prose of American writer Djuna Barnes on the work of contemporary Polish artist Ewa Kuryluk, directing particular attention to the intertextual play between the novels Nightwood (Barnes) and Century 21 (Kuryluk). Barnes’ writing, which is, to put it after Julie Taylor, a representation of “affective modernism,” a style of emotion behind the experienced and experiencing body, becomes for Kuryluk one of the main sources of portraying trauma and love. The contemporary Polish writer treads in the footsteps of Barnes: both at the level of language and imagery, as well as subject matter and symbolism relating to issues of femininity, motherhood and sexuality. The artist captures Barnes’ visual and photographic imagination, which is in correlation with other artists of the first half of the 20th century (e.g. Hans Bellmer), to build an image of love at the end of the 20th century.

Artykuł bada wpływ awangardowej prozy Djuny Barnes na twórczość współczesnej polskiej artystki Ewy Kuryluk, kierując szczególną uwagę na grę intertekstualną między powieściami Ostępy nocy (Barnes) a Wiek 21 (Kuryluk). Pisarstwo Barnes, będące, mówiąc za Julie Taylor, reprezentacją „afektywnego modernizmu”, stylu emocji, za którym stoi doświadczane i doświadczające ciało, staje się dla Kuryluk jednym z głównych źródeł przeżywania traumy oraz miłości. Współczesna polska pisarka niejako stąpa po śladach Barnes: zarówno na poziomie języka i sposobu obrazowania, jak i tematyki oraz symboliki dotyczących zagadnień kobiecości, macierzyństwa, seksualności. Artystka przechwytuje plastyczną i fotograficzną wyobraźnię Barnes, pozostającą w korelacji z innymi twórcami pierwszej połowy XX wieku (np. Hansem Bellmerem), do budowania obrazu miłości z końca ubiegłego stulecia.

Materialność intertekstualności. Figura cienia w komiksie Fun Home Alison Bechdel

In this article, I analyse Alison Bechdel’s autobiographical comic book Fun Home, which has been hailed as the “event of the year,” demonstrating how its visual and verbal layer engages in an intertextual dialogue with Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. Proust’s novel becomes the main intermediary in the double (graphic and textual) coding of gender, sexual, and artistic identity of the main characters: father and daughter. The figure of the shadow plays a crucial role in description and representation; adapted from Jungian psychoanalysis, it takes on a more material and less abstract character in Bechdel’s comic book.

Studium przypadku okrzykniętego „wydarzeniem roku” autobiograficznego komiksu Alison Bechdel Fun home bada, w jaki sposób ikoniczno-werbalna płaszczyzna nawiązuje intertekstualną relację z dziełem W poszukiwaniu straconego czasu Marcela Prousta, które staje się głównym pośrednikiem w podwójnym (graficzno-tekstowym) kodowaniu tożsamości płciowej, seksualnej, artystycznej bohaterów: ojca i córki. Najważniejszą figurą przedstawienia oraz językiem opisu jest cień, który odzyskany z Jungowskiej psychoanalizy nabiera w komiksie bardziej materialnego, mniej abstrakcyjnego charakteru.
