The article concerns the specificity of actor specialisation in Polish theatre of the 19th century. It is an attempt to look at the phenomenon through the prism of questions taken from research on moral censorship. It sheds some light on the principles of the so-called realistic idealism which was the basis of stage art and visual culture of the era shaped by academic art. The theme of the article is the actor specialisation of a romeo and the changes occurring in this specialisation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This article concerns the Warsaw period in the life and work of Helena Modrzejewska. The years 1869-1876 are the least researched and described period in the entire career of this actress. The article refers to Zbigniew Raszewski’s essay ‘Modrzejewska-warszawianka’ (‘Modrzejewska the Varsavian’), debating the significance of the experience of the Krakow theatre in Modrzejewska’s work. In the light of a factual analysis, he presents the actress as a Drama Artist of Warsaw theatres, posing questions about the evaluation of the experience of working on the Warsaw stage in the context of her career. The methodological framework of the article is an attempt to see the principles of realistic idealism, i.e. the model style of the art of acting in the nineteenth century, not only in the actress’s stage performance, but also in social life and the iconographic material based on Jan Mieczkowski’s photographs.

This article discusses a photographic project by Michał Chomiński (1819–1886), an actor and chronicler of the Warsaw State Theaters. Based on primary sources (partly included in the appendix), this reconstruction of the hitherto untold story of Chomiński’s Gallery of Dramatic Artists of Warsaw Theaters broadens our knowledge of the beginnings of Polish theater historiography. Chomiński is shown as the first collector of theater iconography who appreciated the documentary value of the photograph. The methodological framework of the article is based on selected aspects of research on collecting practices from a cultural studies perspective.

Artykuł dotyczy niezrealizowanego projektu fotograficznego autorstwa Michała Chomińskiego (1819–1886), aktora i kronikarza Teatrów Warszawskich.

The article deals with the profession of theater photographer and the question of its tradition in Poland. Starting from a brief discussion and listing of the first theater photographers by Ignacy Płażewski in his book Dzieje polskiej fotografii 1839-1939 (The History of Polish Photography 1839-1939; 2003), the text verifies and develops Płażewski’s findings. Based on source research of the collection of Polish theater photography up to about 1918, scattered in many museums, libraries and archives in Poland and Ukraine, an overview of the most important theatrical photographers and photographers in the 19th century and their connections to professional theater in the Polish lands has been proposed. An additional research question is an attempt to determine the date of birth of the profession of theater photographer based on source material.
