The Origins of Kazimierz (outside Cracow) Traced in Sandomierz

The 1335 foundation (chartering) of Kazimierz, the town situated beside Cracow, was a difficult venture as a group of settlers had to be brought from another strong urban centre. Owing to the memory of the rebellion led by alderman (vogt) Albert and due to the political situation, Casimir III the Great most probably sought assistance from the town of Sandomierz in an attempt to find an optimum solution. This supposition is confirmed by the fact that the king favoured the town after 1335 and, even more importantly, that the foundation charter and one of the first documents for the new commune were issued at Sandomierz. A close relationship between Sandomierz and Kazimierz is observable for the subsequent years.

3 czerwca 2022 r. w Instytucie Historii im. Tadeusza Manteuffla PAN odbyła się konferencja podsumowująca serię wydawniczą Atlas historyczny Polski. Mapy szczegółowe XVI wieku. Jej organizatorem był Zakład Atlasu Historycznego. Zapraszając referentów, staraliśmy się objąć tematyką obrad najważniejsze zagadnienia dotyczące programu „Atlasu historycznego Polski”: jego genezę, tematy religijne, demograficzne, dzieje miast i sieci osadniczej, wreszcie pespektywy dalszego rozwoju. Ostateczny program wystąpień był zgodny ze spisem treści w niniejszym dziale. Publikowane tu teksty nie odzwierciedlają natomiast dokładnie wypowiedzi ustnych, są obszerniejsze, co w niektórych przypadkach skutkuje innym rozłożeniem akcentów i korektą postawionej tezy w stosunku do głosu na konferencji.

Principles of Editing Historical Sources at the Time of the Digital RevolutionThis article proposes to examine the essence of editing historical sources at a time when rendering the contents of a source available and outfitting it with a scientific apparatus do not call for its copying and printing. The fundamental form of a publication should be the manuscript’s digital facsimile. On the other hand, its edition involves predominantly the preparation of instruments for studying the contents of the given monument and its initial interpretations. The suitable form for geographic indices as well as those of persons and objects consists of mutually connected databases corresponding to their specificity. An initial analysis of a source encompasses, first and foremost, its proper complete or partial deciphering; the ensuing effect should entail, i.a. a transcription of suitable parts of the texts and a source studies introduction. The edition of a single source is not a completed effort but a process involving also the recipient and, at the same time, comprising part of a wider undertaking, i.e. the construction of a joint base of source knowledge about the past.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie roli miast prywatnych na tle sieci miejskiej województw kaliskiego i poznańskiego w XV i XVI w. Dla XV stulecia dokonano podziału ośrodków na cztery kategorie z wykorzystaniem kryteriów ilościowych i jakościowych. Dla schyłku wieku XVI zaproponowano rozwinięcie wyliczeń Jacka Wiesiołowskiego na podstawie szerszej podstawy źródłowej. Zestawienie wyników tych dwóch zabiegów posłużyło do ich wzajemnej weryfikacji oraz wskazania zmian w sieci miejskiej XVI stulecia. Spojrzenie przez pryzmat dokonanej klasyfikacji na tę sieć oraz na dynamikę procesu lokacyjnego zamyka niniejsze rozważania.
