The article addresses the challenges and opportunities for academic education as a consequence of the technological revolution, with particular emphasis on the context of information and communication technologies. This also applies to the impact of social media on the education process. The possibilities of reaching students with knowledge useful in everyday life, broadening mental horizons have been presented. In addition, the new role of universities in which traditional education is replaced by distance education is indicated. It is also the use of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube channel in the education process. Against this background, the possibilities of the LMS ILIAS of Elk Campus Branch were indicated (www.uwmelk. edu.pl). Comments and reactions of students, including the results of the digital self-assessment questionnaire, show that they crave forms and methods of e-learning to conduct classes. The article delivers recommendations regarding the best practice within the information and communication technologies in education.
