The issue of tenderness has never been the major topic of moral theology. It is enough to have a quick look at the most popular dictionaries of moral theology to see a total absence, or only a marginal presence, of this issue, either in the doctrinal teaching or the catalogue of virtues. This article will present certain 20th-century philosophical and theological attempts to tackle the issue of tenderness that were introductory to the theology of tenderness suggested by Pope Francis. The article presents different approaches to tenderness in the pope’s theology and its existential examples. Pope Francis seems to understand tenderness as the mode of existence and relations with other people that correlates with the mode of being a Christian in the world, because this is the way of showing God to the world. This way of life is characterised by empathic closeness, life focused on the gift of self, a real participation in the life of the other person with his joys and sufferings, and, last but not least, paternal and maternal care. If we assume that the goal of moral theology is to show authentic human existence in specific places of man’s life, it has to be said that, after Pope Francis’ teaching, it is impossible to contribute to moral theology and ignore tenderness as the central virtue vital for living the Christian calling.

Teologia moralna nie poświęciła jak dotąd w swojej historii wiele miejsca zagadnieniu czułości. Wystarczy rzucić okiem do najpopularniejszych słowników teologii moralnej, aby stwierdzić albo całkowitą nieobecność, albo jedynie marginalną obecność tej problematyki, czy to w nauczaniu doktrynalnym, czy chociażby w katalogu cnót. W niniejszym artykule zostaną ukazane niektóre dwudziestowieczne próby filozoficznego i teologicznego zmagania się z zagadnieniem czułości, które stanowiły niejako wprowadzenie do zaproponowanej przez papieża Franciszka teologii czułości. Zostaną także ukazane sposoby rozumienia czułości w teologii Franciszka oraz jej egzystencjalne przykłady. Papież Franciszek, wydaje się rozumieć czułość jako sposób egzystencji i relacji z drugim człowiekiem, który współgra ze sposobem bycia chrześcijaninem w świecie, ponieważ jest to sposób ukazania Boga światu. Ten sposób życia charakteryzuje się empatyczną bliskością, egzystencją na sposób daru z siebie, realnym uczestnictwem w życiu drugiego człowieka w jego radościach i cierpieniach, i w końcu, w ojcowskim i macierzyńskim zatroskaniu. Wedle miary, w której teologia moralna ma jako swój przedmiot ukazanie autentycznej egzystencji ludzkiej w konkretnych miejscach życia człowieka, trzeba powiedzieć, że po nauczaniu Franciszka nie jest możliwym uprawianie teologii moralnej, która abstrahuje od czułości jako centralnej cnoty w realizacji chrześcijańskiego powołania.
