Pursuant to the concept developed by Helmut Klages, five types of morality characteristic for contemporary societies with developed economic structures may be distinguished: conventional, realistic, idealistic, hedonistic-materialistic morality and morality of the resigned. In compliance with the thesis of this paper, the latter two types of morality should be significantly connected with irrational consumer behaviours – demonstrative consumption, compensative consumption and shopaholism. As our research conducted throughout Poland in August 2010 demonstrated, approximately 1/5 of Poles aged 15 and more are included in the segments of hedonisticmaterialistic morality and of morality of the resigned. As expected, the highest percentage of compensative shoppers was found in the segment of hedonistic materialists – 1/3 of them buy compensatively, whereas 1/3 of hedonistic materialists buying compensatively demonstrate inclinations to shopaholism. The idealists constitute the second most susceptible to compensation segment. Moreover, this segment leads as well in terms of demonstrative consumer behaviours.

Contemporary societies are not able to evade individualisation processes, a consequence of structural diversification of the society, increased material standard of living and access to mass consumption. Transformations occurring in today’s societies evidence a need for analysing the mechanisms of resource creation, constituting an alternative to the current order. Can social capital be treated as a moral resource participating in the development of a new social order? Created and communicated through – among others – religion and tradition, it cannot be evaluated measurably, and yet it constitutes a fundamental element of the community’s resources. Possession of those resources is particularly important in connection with the above mentioned transformations and the inclination of contemporary culture to over-emphasise man’s right to „freedom without limitations”.

The paper discusses pro-social and self-centered attitudes among high school graduates during the 2008/2009 school year in five Polish cities (Szprotawa, Puławy, Kraśnik, Dęblin, and Gdańsk). The recent survey was a follow-up to an analogous study carried out in the same schools and classes during the 1993/1994 school year. Altogether 992 youth in their final grade of high school took part in the study. The empirical data gathered from various urban milieus and compared with that from the 1994 and 2009 studies, allows one to formulate broad generalizations in terms of moral dynamics among high school graduates. It appears that only one-in-ten high school graduates studied was inclined to prefer the good of others (pro-social) to his/her own. Interestingly, compromise and egoistic attitudes were almost at equivalent levels. However, from 1994–2009, there was a slight drop in the level of egoistic attitudes at the expense of compromising and undecided attitudes. Still pro-social attitudes are represented in significant minority of the youth studied (11%); whereas, compromising (39%) and egoistic (34,4%) attitudes continue to dominate, respectively.
