Neo-nacionalistické a neo-fašistické strany a hnutí získaly značnou půdu.
The article offers a detailed analysis of the poem “The Map” by Elizabeth Bishop. As the opening text of Bishop’s first collection and also of all the editions of her collected poems, the poem can be read as a statement of the poet’s creative principles. The close-reading of the poem stresses the importance of the various encounters examined in the poem: the map (and the poem) is seen as a border space where “the other” can be approached in a kind of creative dialogue in which a plurality of perspectives co-exists, no one is in complete control, and the perception of the other is seen as an open dynamic process which is never completed.
Xavier Galmiche’s book Znaky a přízraky: Výbor ze statí o české a středoevropské literatuře (Signs and Spectres: Selected Essays on Czech and Central European Literature) brings together some forty papers written between 2000–2022 mostly in French. In the geographical context indicated by the title, the Galmiche embraces a long period from the 19th to the 21st century, often extending the field into fine arts, history of ideas, and culture. The review article argues that the unifying thread of Galmiche’s works lies in his interest in borders: linguistic, ethnical, national or even political. He demonstrates how the multiple borders and the mixture of criteria which determine them foster the individual poetics or various aesthetic phenomena on larger scales, both synchronic and diachronic. A remarkable quality which the analysis of Galmiche’s contributions points out consists mainly in the author’s independence from fashionable methodological trends, and particularly the fact that it values and respects the rigorously historical and philological anchorage of the critical approach to literary texts.
This study analyzes the topic of European bordering discussed in the publications Aktivní hranice v Evropě [Active Borders in Europe] by K. B. Müller (ed.) and Ne-prostupné hranice Evropy [The Non-Permeable Borders of Europe] by M. Trčka. In the first and second parts of the study, the author presents the structure of both works and an analysis of their main findings. In the third part, he analyzes the theoretical anchoring of the European bordering in more detail, especially with respect to the innovative concept of the so-called active border. He draws attention to the redefining of borders as opportunities with regard to the implications and limits of this concept. The active dimension of borders manifests itself especially in areas of actual “borderlessness,” where the physical plane of borders is substantially suppressed, with which the symbolic plane of demarcation predominates. If we wanted to extend the apparent positive results of the use of active borders to the level of conventional borders, it would be necessary to strengthen their two-way permeability, which would likely require greater transnationalization, or more precisely cosmopolitization. Lastly, the author reflects on borders and identity in the light of the current European challenges.

This study deals with existential elements in The Witness, a novel by Václav Řezáč. Its aim is to find and analyse these elements, to reveal the connection between this work by Václav Řezáč and the existentialist thought system, and to place the novel in the context of existentialist literature. Václav Řezáč’s work has not yet been explicitly associated with the existentialist school of thought. He is usually characterized as a writer of psychological and socialist construction prose works. However, his novel The Witness can be understood in various ways, including through the prism of existentialism. This study thus presents an analysis of The Witness through various existential categories and a comparison with some literary works traditionally classified as existential prose.
In Chicana/o prose, namely the fiction of Helena María Viramontes, the artistic depiction of the city of Los Angeles becomes a synecdochic expression of the frontier space. It is a crossroads of viewpoints stemming from the confrontation of the dividing physical frontier and the porous cultural frontier that leads to miscenegation. The article analyzes such a literary representation of space using the contrasting dynamics of the literary images of the Latino barrio and the urban freeways that threaten to destroy it. It emphasizes a different approach of Viramontes to the urban myth of the Californian metropolis. With its references to Latin-American authors, the article furthermore suggests the possibility of reading the Viramontes novel as part of the Latin-American literary tradition.
The essay reconstructs the notion of “matter-of-factness” (Sachlichkeit, věcnost) in Petr Rezek’s philosophy and its roots in the immanence of our experience – or more precisely, in the tension generated by two requirements that are bound to it: (1) the thing’s (or fact’s) dependence on its appearance and (2) its difference from the appearance. These requirements create the need for immanent techniques for approaching the thing, should we wish to understand it without either overlooking or outright destroying. The notion of kitsch, in contrast to the notion of art on the one hand and matter-of-factness on the other, proves crucial for identifying these techniques. By elaborating on this contrast, we finally arrive at a direct identification of matter-of-factness with the notion of tension, as Rezek does in his late philosophy in the context of Hermann Schmitz’s “new phenomenology.”

The basic topic of the study is the comparison of the literary original with the film adaptation. It is about Josef Urban’s novel “Habermann’s Mill” and its subsequent film adaptation of the same name directed by Juraj Herz. The theme of the novel is based on a real event, and it is, in its own way, a highly discussed and controversial subject concerning the post-war deportation of Germans from Czechoslovakia. The problem is that the novel, although not a documentary, treats many events inaccurately compared to the surviving sources, even in key motifs. Further deviations from reality occur in the film adaptation of the novel, which has caused legitimate objections among many experts, for example regarding the treatment of the character of the characters, which is wronged either intentionally or due to the ignorance of the author, screenwriter and director. The study summarizes these findings.

Studie tyto poznatky shrnuje.
