Adam Wiśniewski-Snerg (1937-1995) was a Polish science fiction writer. In his novel Robot (1973), he made an attempt at a literary visualization of a machine acquiring human identity. In this article I would like to follow the ethical consequences of such situations in created literary worlds. It is worth remembering, however, that these artistic worlds often serve to test non-literary reality. In his novel, Wiśniewski-Snerg also dealt with the problem of human feelings (e.g. moral dilemmas) in a thinking machine, which is formed in the image and likeness of a human being. Such literary reflection is valuable, partly because it enters into an interesting dialogue with the work of Bruno Schulz (1892- 1942), one of the most important Polish writers of the 20th century. It is also one of the first attempts in Polish literature to address the issue of sentient machines, and is a kind of preview of contemporary dilemmas connected with the work on the creation of artificial intelligence. An example of such a dilemma is the issue of the sentient machine’s perception of the tasks imposed on it by the human-constructor. Perhaps it will start to experience them as a kind of unethical oppression. In Wiśniewski-Snerg’s writing this problem of is, of course, expressed in a metaphorical way.
Spiritual, metaphysical and religious quests seem to be one of the most important aims of writing and literature. At the same time, literature created by outstanding individuals is naturally predestined to arouse quest and desires. The fundamental aim of this article is to explain, on the basis of the works of Jerzy Hulewicz, the ways in which literary creativity is able/not able to face the metaphysical emptiness mentioned by Jürgen Habermas.

Omawiając fenomen twórczości Tadeusza Micińskiego (1873-1918), Jan Stur (1895-1923) napisał: „Zrozumieli wieszcze rzecz najważniejszą: należy powiedzieć ludowi, by czynił w ten a ten sposób dla dobra ojczyzny. Spyta lud: czemu mamy dla ojczyzny cierpieć i ofiarować dobytek nasz i wygodę naszą? A wonczas – materjalizm nie wystarczy.
While discussing gnosis in contemporary Polish culture, it is impossible to overlook the figure of Jerzy Prokopiuk (born 1931). But Prokopiuk’s body of work should not be judged solely on the merit of his prolific publishing and popularising activity, as one should also take into consideration his spiritual, intellectual and gnostic explorations, as well as how they contributed to the historical reception of gnostic ideas in Poland. This is why this paper will seek to present Prokopiuk’s views on the essence of God, the nature of the world, and the human phenomenon.
The objective of this discussion is an attempt to recall that already in Polish modernism, in the work of Tadeusz Miciński (1873-1918), the idea of modifying the human phenotype was signaled. Contemporary times offer the possibility of its partial (for the time being) realization. That is why it is worth confronting this idea with the foundations of religious ethics represented by the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. It is also worth recalling the concerns that Jürgen Habermas (b. 1929) raises about the possibility of the unrestrained development of genetic engineering. Being a secular thinker, the German philosopher analyzes the ethical dangers of liberal eugenics and, in this way, opens up the search for a consensus with religious ethics.
The Judas gnosis A review of the new monograph in Slavic cultural studies: Ewelina Drzewiecka, Herezja Judasza w kulturze (po)nowoczesnej. Studium przypadku, Kraków: Universitas, 2016. Gnoza Judasza Recenzja nowej monografii z zakresu kulturoznawstwa slawistycznego: Ewelina Drzewiecka, Herezja Judasza w kulturze (po)nowoczesnej. Studium przypadku, Kraków: Universitas, 2016.
The current study aims to compare selected Gnostic conceptual categories from Nag Hammadi texts with the literary version of gnosis proposed by Bruno Schulz (1892–1942). He was not aware of the texts found in 1948, but he utilized his knowledge of Gnosis and Gnosticism, which was accessible in the Polish literary community at that time. This included his study of early Christian anti-Gnostic polemicists. The proposed comparison of text fragments from Nag-Hammadi with Schulz’s gnosis seeks to demonstrate the ongoing literary appeal of the apocryphal nature of Gnostic gnosis in the writing of the teacher of the drawings from Drohobych.
The purpose of these considerations is to demonstrate two paths leading to overcoming the dominance of technical reality over human spirituality. This diagnosis is found in documents of the Roman Catholic Church. These attempts will draw inspiration from the neognostic tradition, and they were developed by Mikołaj Bierdiajew (1874–1948) and Tadeusz Miciński (1873–1918).
The scholarly controversy has shifted from a focus on the specific susceptibility of early Christianity and certain Christian mystics to the seductive power of Gnostic knowledge. The present inquiry focuses on the question of whether this kind of temptation is also present in contemporary European culture. In order to address this question, it is worthwhile to examine and reflect upon the perspectives of two philosophers, Nikolai Berdyaev and Jerzy Prokopiuk, who share a desire to gnostically interpret Christianity.
