The issue under discussion concerns the methodological issues pertaining to the cognitive and scientific values of an entry in a dialect dictionary, viewed from the point of view of practical usefulness of dialectal, regional and local dictionaries and their practicality in a dialogue between generations and in the region’s promotion. The essence of the dictionary entry is the number and arrangement of its components, their representativeness and ability to exert influence; the dictionary contains also maps and illustrations, until recently reserved for other kinds of publications. In general, maps and illustrations should be part of an entry, providing geographic information, allowing at the same time to locate a lexeme in a region’s dialect structure and to arrive at its multifaceted visualisations. Keeping in mind its practicality, an entry should be provided with contextual information, using standardised and uniform spelling; it should also include the phonetic, morphological and syntactic peculiarities of a regional dialect. The qualifiers should point to the socially-determined status of a lexeme and form the basis for an entry’s interpretation in its chronological, social, cultural and civilisation-related dimensions.

The article is concerned with the state of the Lublin region dialects from the first half of the 20th century and their description made by Władysław Kuraszkiewicz in the monograph Dialectology. The overview of the dialects of the Lublin region from 1932. Kuraszkiewicz’s account has been confronted with later research and today’s state of dialectal diversification of the Lublin region. The multifaceted character of the linguistic analyses included in the monograph has been pointed out as well as the fact that they perform an important function in current dialectal research. They are still a source of inspiration and discovery of the ethnically, culturally and ethnographically complex linguistic diversification of the Lublin region.
The subject of study is to demonstrate a mutual relationship between a word and its designate as well as the function and place of dialectal words in the linguistic system of countryside residents. Words—remaining in close correlation with designates which they determine—in dialects fulfil not only the function of identification and naming, but also interpretation of the surrounding reality. This is achieved by preservation of lexical and semantic archaisms as well as by the adoption of new meanings and new functions by old words. However, folk dialects cannot be analysed only with regard to their individual character but in close correlation with general Polish language. Specific character of both varieties of language, dialectal and general Polish, forms, in principle, a common linguistic image of the countryside, and both groups of vocabulary supplement and complement each other, thus the description should not concern dialectal vocabulary but the vocabulary appearing in a dialect, i.e., apart from words and typically dialectal meanings also the words and meanings common for a dialect and the general Polish.
The paper deals with the word burka and its synonyms: burek, burczak, burczanka i burocha. The word burka found in the Lublin dialects refers to five related designata, meaning: 1) ‘an overwear made of thick dark cloth or felt having the form of a cape worn during the travel’; 2) ‘a large checked woolen headscarf with fringes put by women over the head and shoulders’; 3) ‘warm woolen skirt’; 4) ‘woollen or linen waist apron’; 5) ‘work and farmhouse apron’. The map of the geographic boundaries of the linguistic forms discussed has been drawn on the basis of the linguistic usage collected from eight hundred 70–90 year old residents of 400 villages of the Lublin region.

The author presents a linguistic and cultural picture of axiological messages conceptualised on the basis of the notions of freedom and independence. The two are closely connected at a semantic and interpretational level and have a clearly marked ethical, political and ideological dimension. The data have been gathered from the interviews with several people who are the oldest country dwellers from the Lublin region. As a result, the author obtains the folk perception of the world, where patriotism and responsibility for the country are much emphasised. Freedom and independence are treated as sacred and entail the notions of service, sacrifice, duty and historical responsibility. The axiological picture of freedom and independence is based upon one’s personal experience and national history.
This study deals with a cultural value of dialect viewed through the prism of lexis pertaining to the customs and culture related aspects of villagers’ popular consciousness as reflected in selected entries of The Dialect Dictionary of the Lublin Region, including wianuszki, jaskółcze ziele, południca, kołowrotek. The study is based on the material of spoken texts of villagers of the Lublin region compiled in the years 1986–2022, with special emphasis placed on the texts’ identificational and organizing role in the linguistic space of each part of the region. This segmentation of rural space is particularly important in the face of not only the disappearance of many names of folk designata in but also cultural and civilization changes. As a special communication phenomenon immersed in time and inscribed in the wider cultural context, words are a collective testimony to the ways the village community is understood to function.

This paper offers a discussion of the linguistic picture of dziad present in the folk worldview of the Lublin region, with special emphasis on social, physical, locative, axiological and customs-related aspects of everyday rural life. The meanings of the lexis analysed are grouped according to eight semantic domains, including ‘man and their role in the family and in the social structure of the village’, ‘farming and harvesting’, ‘plants’, ‘food’, ‘footwear’, ‘tools’, ‘weather phenomena’, and ‘folk customs’. The study is based on spoken texts of 2000 informers between 70–90 years of age, collected in 1986–2020, in 600 villages of the Lublin region.

Przedmiotem rozważań jest językowy obraz dziada, utrwalony w ludowym sposobie widzenia świata mieszkańców regionu lubelskiego, z podkreśleniem aspektu społeczno-bytowego, fizycznego, lokatywnego, aksjologicznego i obrzędowego.
The city and the country represent different worlds and slightly different ways of conceptualizing and perceiving the surrounding reality. The article focuses on two aspects of mutual relations, i.e. what rural and urban areas have in common and in which respects they differ. These considerations are the result of many years of research into the language and culture of the Lublin region and the linguistic awareness of its inhabitants.

Miasto i wieś to różne światy i nieco odrębne sposoby konceptualizacji oraz odbioru otaczającej rzeczywistości. W artykule skupiono się na dwóch aspektach wzajemnych relacji, czyli na tym, co jest wspólne (wieś i miasto) i na tym, co jest przeciwstawne (wieś a miasto). Rozważania są wynikiem wieloletnich badań nad językiem i kulturą regionu lubelskiego oraz świadomością językową jego mieszkańców.
The paper addresses the condition of folk dialects and dialectological research within the linguistic and cultural reality of rural communities in the 21st century. Ongoing changes in the civilizational, moral, and mental profiles of rural inhabitants pose new challenges for dialectology, making it possible both to interpret linguistic transformations occurring in the contemporary countryside and to situate language within a broader cultural, social, and civilizational context. This perspective presents dialect not merely as a document of a passing era, but as a lasting component of the national heritage. Such an approach is enabled by emphasizing the interdisciplinary character of contemporary research – encompassing ethnolinguistic and axiolinguistic perspectives, sociological dialectology, dialectal textology, and oral history – developed in close interaction with related disciplines, primarily sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics, ethnography, and ethnology.

Jest to możliwe dzięki wyeksponowaniu interdyscyplinarnego charakteru współczesnych badań (aspekt etnolingwistyczny i aksjolingwistyczny, dialektologia socjologizująca, tekstologia gwarowa, historia mówiona), rozwijanych w powiązaniu z innymi dyscyplinami, przede wszystkim z socjolingwistyką, etnolingwistyką, etnografią i etnologią.
The aim of this paper is to discuss the problems connected with identity and tradition in the local and global aspect. The text is concerned with, firstly, how these two spheres interrelate at linguistic, cultural and mental levels in the rural and urban reality nowadays and, secondly, how to protect and promote what is local and regional in the globalised world. The relationship between modern globalisation tendencies and culturallinguistic legacy of a region boils down to the search for an answer to whether globalisation threatens the traditional system of values and the local identity of “little homeland” or rather upholds it and gives it a broader perspective for development as well as points to its didactic and integrative function. This is ensured by noticing a link between the local world and the global one – namely, tradition.
The object of the discussion is a dialectological and ethnolinguistic analysis of the folk culinary nomenclature collected in 54 villages of the Lublin region in the period 2016–2018 from people from two generational groups: aged 66–90 and 16–30. The inclusion of the indicated age parameters permitted the presentation of intrasystem vertical stratifi cation of vocabulary and diagnosis of the generational variance of the present state of familiarity with names related to cuisine. The analysis covered 130 names of traditional dishes made of fl our, water, milk, potatoes, groats and vegetables. It also quoted villagers’ utterances, including with interpretations and categorisations. Utterances about cuisine are verbal texts built according to a culturally established pattern, they are characterised by a documentation and practical value, they bond the whole non-material cultural heritage together and are its clearest exponent that is fully accepted by all generations.
