The concept of dissent as it is articulated in the work of Ladislav Hejdánek is investigated in the article. The author first utilizes Pithart’s schematic division of dissent into the protesting and the reflective in order to subsequently, in Hejdánek’s conception, distinguish yet a third, creative type of dissent. This the author then analyzes in more detail in a systematic interpretation of Hejdánek’s attitudes and thoughts (including comparisons with the texts of other dissidents and thinkers). Nevertheless, he primarily focuses on the Chartist discussion on courage, in which he clarifies Hejdánek’s position, along with a search for a possible shielding, or more precisely in the context of a civilly disobedient position of an admissible and convincing concept of morality.

V předloženém textu je zkoumáno pojetí disentu v díle Ladislava Hejdánka. Autor si nejprve pomáhá Pithartovým schematickým dělením disentu na protestující a reflektující, aby následně v Hejdánkově koncepci odlišil ještě třetí, tvůrčí typ disentu. Ten následně detailněji analyzuje v systematické interpretaci Hejdánkových postojů a myšlení (včetně komparace s texty dalších disidentů a myslitelů).
This study presents Ladislav Hejdánek’s conception of non-political politics. It attempts to systematize Hejdánek’s unsystematic contributions to the subject. The overall conception can be based not on anti-politics, but on the mutual struggle against a) the expansion of politics into the sphere of the non-political, and b) the political’s abandonment of its bonds with the non-political sphere. With this ambiguity is linked the characterization of non-political politics – as, on the one hand, a form of education and of the transformation of consciousness, and on the other hand as only “mediating,” overseeing activity along the lines of the transport police. This duality also reflects the twofold nature of power politics – the correct (here it is necessary to educate) and the incorrect (here it is necessary, above all, to oversee) – and of the presence of the politics of interest in power politics. Another specific property of Hejdánek’s non-political politics stems from its democratic character which is here, however, above all an inner activity based in Christianity.

This paper deals with Ladislav Hejdánek’s philosophical thought and its possible influences on the history of literature. Attention is focused on two problem areas: first on Hejdánek’s work on the nature of art, which was of substantial importance, particularly in the cultural and social polemics of the 1960s, as his theoretical definition of art went along similar lines to reader response criticism and Umberto Eco’s ideas. However, in view of his considerable detachment from the literature of the object it did not provide any initiatives that had a significant impact on literary studies concepts. Hejdánek’s non-object process philosophy, centring around the concept of the event, may be considered to be of greater importance. Here it is possible to seek tools for a more dynamic non-essential conception of periodization, and more than anything else, individual frameworks (genres, directions and discourses) with broader applicability.
The familiar division of political thinkers into moralists and realists leads the author to the question of how to classify Ladislav Hejdánek’s unique yet ambiguous approach to public weal and matters politic. Does Hejdánek base his understanding of democracy and liberalism (and of liberties an drights thereunto appertaining) on morality (on philosophy or on system theory) or does he recognise the primacy of matters politic? Though in Hejdánek’s writings moral appeals are frequent and fundamental, the author seeks to show that realism prevails. In the present text, the author delineates the specific realism of this Czech thinker more precisely by analysing Hejdánek’s texts, especially his Epistles to a Friend.
Ladislav Hejdánek (1927–2020) is known as a thinker who strove to develop his concept of so-called non-objectifying thinking. But he is not an isolated author in this respect. From amongst the world philosophers, Karl Jaspers (1883–1969) also explored a similar issue. Both were convinced that our thinking did not allow us to adequately thematize reality (or certain aspects of reality) and disproportionately objectified it. The study attempts to, in outline, chart, contrast and critically assess these reflections. Jaspers’ alternative to this objectifying thinking is given to be his concept of ciphers of transcendence, by which non-objectifiable reality is to be represented symbolically and without the use of concepts. Hejdánek finds internal contradictions in Jaspers’s conception and proposes his own alternative, which does not allow for the abandonment of thinking in concepts but for its development by working with non‑objective intentions. The dispute between the two authors is understood as a dispute over the possibility of a future change in the way of thinking that has characterized the European tradition up until now.

This article focuses on Patočka’s conception of “negative Platonism”; it proceeds from Patočka’s study of the same name and looks to several other texts which have originated in connection with that study. First of all, it offers a brief résumé of the key points of Patočka’s conception (the experience of freedom, the conception of idea, the relation between idea and objecthood). Next, it summarises and comments on the main thoughts of Rezek’s, Kouba‘s and Hejdánek’s reflections and critiques of the conception (with a look at some other interpretations). With their help, the inner contradiction of Patočka’s conception is demonstrated, in which idea should remain purely negative, and yet be a calling to the world, enabling true discourse about beings. In conclusion the author of the paper puts forward the suggestion that it was this contradictory nature that led Patočka to abandon his “negative Platonism”.
In this study, the author investigates, analyzes and evaluates the philosophically and politically important, interactive role played by criticism in forming and maintaining the concept of a democratic republic, and which played a fundamental role in the philosophical and political works of T. G. Masaryk, Emanuel Rádl, Jan Patočka, Ladislav Hejdánek and Erazim Kohák. The study first describes Masaryk’s concept of a democratic republic, which originated in his philosophical, social and political criticism of the time, and then continues with Rádl’s criticism of nationalism, also linked to Masaryk; Patočka’s criticism of Masaryk’s and Rádl’s philosophy and politics; and Hejdánek’s and Kohák’s criticism of Patočka’s criticism. Philosophical criticism played an irreplaceable role both in the initial sustaining of Masaryk’s and Rádl’s concept of a democratic republic and in its renewal and modernization. In the conclusion, the critical discourse of the authors discussed in the study is summarized.

V této studii autor zkoumá, analyzuje a hodnotí filosoficky i politicky významnou interaktivní roli kritiky při vytváření a udržování konceptu demokratické republiky. Právě kritika totiž zaujímala zcela zásadní místo ve filosofickém i politickém díle T. G. Masaryka, Emanuela Rádla, Jana Patočky, Ladislava Hejdánka a Erazima Koháka.
The article presents, in an integrated form, the main lines of Hejdánek’s thinking regarding ideology. It is based on published and unpublished texts and on sound recordings from his “apartment” seminars. Hejdánek does not approach ideology as being a fixed, ready-made system of tenets or dogmas, instead seeking a deeper understanding of the ideological mode of thought. The rise of ideologies is, according to him, a modern phenomenon, and Hejdánek considers it to be a kind of reprise of the myth in the modern age. He shows what is the precondition for the possibility of ideology, how ideology conditions human consciousness and how we can free ourselves from its power. According to Hejdánek, the starting point for this does not lie in a struggle with ideology on its own turf. Ideology can be overcome only by something that stands in radical opposition against it – that is, by the development of people into spiritual beings by way of truth, conscience and faith.
