W 2020 r. ukazała się w Krakowie, nakładem Wydawnictwa WAM, książka prof. Branta Pitre’a, zatytułowana Jezus i żydowskie korzenie Maryi.

The time from the conception to the birth of Jesus is most often given as nine or ten months. Sometimes one and the same author gives both numbers without any explanation, for example Tertullian, Zeno of Verona, Ambrose of Milan or Jerome. However there is no contradiction between the two. „Ten months” refers to lunar months (28 days), and corresponds to nine months in the solar calendar. The ecclesiastical authors used the formula „ten (lunar) months” not only be-cause they wanted to follow Virgil, as Adkin suggests. It appears also in the writings of pagan authors of late antiquity, and survived as a set phrase in everyday language into times when the lunar calendar was no longer used (with the exception of the Christian reckoning of Easter, which continued to be based on lunar cycles). Another matter are the opinions reported by Epiphanius in the Panarion, that Jesus was born seven (according to the Alogi) or nine and a half months after conception. These opinions arose no doubt from numerological speculation, but the length of pregnancy is also reckoned in lunar months. This shows that in late antiąuity the expression „ten months” was not merely a formula. Lunar months were still used and understood, particularly if it was to give the length of time spent by a child in its mother’s womb.

According to St Jerome (347-420) there is an unbreakable link between Mary and life, as well as the plans of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. She is chosen by God for the role that he has assigned her. St Jerome presents Mary as a woman and a virgin. He shows the fatherhood of God in relation to Jesus and excludes the physical fatherhood of Joseph. While giving to Mary the task that is beyond human abilities, God provides help in the person of a righteous man to be her husband and the foster father of His Son, Jesus. Jerome also shows God’s concern for the dignity of marriage and the family, in their natural dimension (the union between a man and a woman only). Basing this on the Scripture and the way of expression in Hebrew, he rejects the hypothesis of the brothers and sisters of Jesus. St. Jerome knows very well the results of Scripture research as well as other writings - Apocrypha. He rejects the opinions of the Marcionites and the Manicheans. He stresses the reality of the incarnation of Jesus, the Son of God and emphasizes the virginity of Mary. In modern times, the Commentary on the gospel according to Mathew by St Jerome invites us to a deeper reflection on engagement, marriage and virginity, maternity and paternity as well as trust in God and confidence between spouses.

The article attempts to determine the origins of the Church. The author maintains that the formation of the Church should be perceived as a concept coming from God the Father. The Church originated at the time of the Fall of Adam and Eve. A resulting breach of human communion with God triggered an immediate response on the part of God. It was His divine purpose that the communion be re-established, but on a different level. This was achieved in the biblical Eden. The Eternal Logos has not only fulfilled the creative, but also the redemptive function. A Woman is permanently inscribed into the origins of the Church. In her we may see Mary, the Mother of Christ and the Mother of Church.

The issue of justification of Mary and her merits has been distinguishing the Christians for ages. Both issues are serious difficulty in driving for achievement of visible unity of Christ’s disciples. History of the Church shows that dogmas defined at the Councils were rather starting point than an end of interpretation of Revelation in the Church. In the patristic period of time not only the theologians but the whole Church as well was taking part in arriving to proper interpreta- tion of the faith. Mary needed God’s mercy and has granted to this mercy in more perfect way, not ordinary as a rest of Eve’s children. She has granted to the justification beforehand, not subsequently. She was protected against the original sin, and not relieved from it. The justification of Mary is of preventive character. The Christ is, in relation to her, more perfect Mediator, because keeps her from the sin, instead – like in a case of the other Adam’s descendants – to clear of the sin.

Polish Marian devotion is reflected in the Polish law. Literal references to Saint Mary are contained in legal acts of public authorities, as well as acts enacted by local government bodies. These acts occupy different places in the system of sources of law. Most of them does not raise a constitutional objection, the legality of others is a debatable issue (eg. City council resolution expressing the will of Mary’s patronage on the city), and a few are contrary to the principle of religious, ideological and philosophical impartiality of the public authorities. Symbolic dimension of legal references to Mary – eg. Mary’s images in the municipal coats of arms or Mary’s name used in public streets names – demonstrates responsiveness of the Polish legal order to religious beliefs of some citizens, while not denying the paradigm of the separation of church and state, and without prejudice to the rights and freedoms of other people.

Pobożność maryjna Polaków znajduje swoje odzwierciedlenie w polskim prawie. Literalne odwołania do Matki Bożej zawierają akty prawne naczelnych organów władzy publicznej, jak i akty stanowione przez organy samorządu terytorialnego. Akty te przejawiają duże zróżnicowanie co do kategoryzacji i miejsca w systemie źródeł prawa. Większość z nich nie budzi zastrzeżeń natury konstytucyjnej, legalność innych jest kwestią nieoczywistą (np. uchwała rady miasta wyrażająca wolę ustanowienia Maryi patronką miasta), nieliczne zaś stoją w sprzeczności z zasadą religijnej, światopoglądowej i filozoficznej bezstronności władz publicznych. Symboliczny wymiar odwołań w prawie do Maryi – np. obecność wizerunku Maryi w herbach gmin czy nazwanie imieniem Maryi publicznej ulicy – dowodzi responsywności polskiego porządku prawnego wobec przekonań religijnych części swych obywateli, zarazem nie przecząc paradygmatowi rozdziału Kościoła od państwa i nie naruszając praw i wolności innych osób.

Topics that have been taken in this article concern the role of Mary in the work of salvation and her place in the Christian life. The Church wants to talk about Mary without exaggerating and diminishing her merits. However, there are maximalist tendencies in Mariology that should be researched. The basis for these considerations was the Mariological theorems proclaimed by Fr. Dominik Chmielewski SDB, in which one can find some theological doubts.

Tematy, które zostały podjęte w niniejszym artykule, dotyczą roli Maryi w dziele zbawienia i Jej miejsca w życiu chrześcijanina. Kościół chce mówić o Maryi bez wyolbrzymiania i pomniejszania Jej zasług.

The theology of grace focuses on God’s self-giving. In this mystery God gives not a thing but Himself. He invites human being to participate in His trinitarian life and makes this possible. The teaching of contemporary Popes - St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI involves the personalistic issues while dealing with the mystery of grace. In this personalistic language is spoken rather about choice of person than (pre-)destination. The response for God’s gift comes from reason and will, but it’s pointed that it goes through paths of truth and freedom. Biblical examples show the rules of God’s grace. These are: Mary - full of grace, Paul and Cornelius. These cases present the intrinsic way of God’s self-giving. It’s to realize that the mystery of grace reveals the truth about the condition of person who is to accept the gift of salvation. In the light of the Holy Spirit one learns clearly about the God’s intentions and is invited to follow them. The grace acts in the light of the truth and gives an impulse to freedom. It can be accepted only voluntarily, is fulfilled within the Church and brings ecclesial fruits.

Wola Boża jest rzadziej przywoływanym przymiotem Bożym niż miłosierdzie. Motyw woli Bożej znalazł jednak swoje miejsce w duchowych zapiskach św. Faustyny Kowalskiej. W Dzienniczku zostało zawarte głębokie bogactwo treści poruszające to teologiczne zagadnienie.

Only three Old Testament texts can be referred to Mary as the Mother of Jesus Christ: Gn. 3,15 in the fuller sense, Is. 7,14 and Mi. 5, 2 in the literal sense. Similarities and associations with persons, events and objects of worship appearing in the Old Testament are applied to the Virgin first of all in the Church’s liturgy.

The subject of the author’s reflection is the annunciation to Zechariah and Mary (Luke 1,5-38) approached from the literary point of view. The author especially wants to establish, what relations there are between the structure of those events and some Old Testament literary patterns. Hence in the first part of the article the construction of the first and the second annunciations is presented, and at the same time it is stressed, that Luke has shown them in a similar way. The second part of the article is devoted to a discussion of two Old Testament literary patterns: the promise of having a child, and the calling, with a specification of the latter’s basic elements. It turns out that both these patterns can be reduced to the same items: contact with God, presentation of the task, difficulties in fulfilling the task, consolidation, and sign from God. The last fragment of the article points to and accounts for the fact, that Luke, working on 1,5-38, has used not only the Old Testament pattern of the promise of having a child, but also the pattern of calling, especially that of Moses (Exod. 3,1-12) and Gideon (Judg. 6,11-24).

This article presents a selection of well-known Polish literary works in order to prove that the Marian cult is an important and frequently recurrent literary motif. The specialist literature on the issue of Marian themes in Polish literature is abundant. The synthetic nature of this article hinders a broader discussion on that issue. The Marian cult hugely influenced the work of Polish poets and writers. The peak of its literary impact came in the 15th century, witnessing the birth of its many literary manifestations, with the leading role of the text entitled Bogurodzica [Mother of God]. However, Mother Mary was also worshipped in the works of Polish literary artists in other historical periods. Mary, as Mother of God, has always been seen as close to people who sought consolation and aid in their problems and in the turbulent events in the Polish history, as borne out by literary works.

W rozwinięciu autor dokonuje analizy formacji teologiczno-duchowej przekazywanej w listach pasterskich bpa I. Jeża, w Materiałach homiletycznych przed koronacją Matki Bożej w Skrzatuszu oraz w kazaniach i homiliach głoszonych z okazji uroczystości w sanktuarium skrzatuskim. W ostatniej części artykułu autor podsumowuje i stawia wnioski na podstawie dokonanej analizy tekstów.
