Article focuses on the analysis of approaches to studying cultural capital of IT developers. Exploratory case study refers to the IT developers’ activity and focuses the cultural capital (CC) of the Ukrainian IT sector. Theoretical foundation of the study is based on the cultural capital theory referring to the value of social relations and networks. Research results demonstrate that Ukrainian IT developers accumulate CC through education: individual, in family, at school and with peers. Cultural capital could be transformed into other forms of capital: economic and social ones.
The aim of this paper is to analyse selected conditions of professional achievements of young polish employees with higher education degrees. The number of graduates has raised significantly in the last twenty years and they are employed not only as the professionals, but also on the positions, which do not demand academic qualifications. The author makes the hypothesis that the amount of cultural capital (in Pierre Bourdieu comprehension) has influence on the position on the labour market. On the basis of the qualitative research, there are the premises to acknowledge the influence of cultural capital on professional achievements. The conclusion from the analysis of polish graduates’ biographies is that occupational position of the employees equipped equally in cultural capital in the institutionalized state (diploma) may depend on the competences acquired during socialization process, which refers to the cultural capital in the embodied state. The paper presents a typology of young employed graduates in terms of their work expectations. The typology reveals how the primary socialization and acquired cultural capital influence the young employees’ attitude to their work and career – if they are preservative and focused on safety guarantees, or creative, looking for their professional development and self-fulfillment.
In the context of post‑accession migration from Poland it is important to analyze not only its economic but social and cultural implications for receiving and home country as well as for migrants themselves. Recent migration takes place in a new context of inter‑European mobility and as such can be treated as a part of ‘life project’, career strategy and a new form of migration. The paper focus is on the theoretical and empirical frame of social and cultural capital accumulated by migrants abroad and transferred into home country. The theoretical framework is supposed to provide a base for empirical research on the social and cultural capital transfer possibilities in the case of return migration. The question such a research would try to answer is: can the return migrants bean active actors of innovation and social change?

The purpose of this paper is to present the cultural and creative capital that in the case of underdeveloped areas may become important development factors and elements of regional specialization. To achieve the goal of the paper different research methods have been used, including secondary data: literature studies of the works as well as magazines and other publications, statistical analysis, reasoning and synthesis for the overall study. The statement based on the analyses is that the sector of culture and creativity that booms at local and regional levels has strategic capacities for combining creativity and innovation in order to boost local economies, to initiate new forms of activity, to create new and sustainable jobs, to bring positive impact on other sectors and increase the attractiveness of cities and regions. The creative and cultural sector is a catalyst for structural change in a number of industrial as well as rural areas and can lead to "rejuvenation" of their economies and influence the public perception of these regions. Cultural and creative capital is an important factor of economic and social innovation, and also helps to start the development process. Culture plays an important role in the structure of the population and is an important element for personal growth and development.
On the basis of these analyses, we cannot say that cultural and social resources have no role to play at all in the process of individual educational decision-making. What this study shows is that these do not enable us to explain the effect of parental SES on educational choice. In the absence of such evidence and in the light of the patterns found in the pupils’ accounts, we think to find some support for a view of educational decision-making as being the result of rational calculation. In this calculation parents take their own situation as a point of reference, considering the (educational) resources on which they can rely.
Theoretical context of the presented research on the determinants of cultural capital of young people comprises Bourdieu’s Reproduction Theory, the concepts of information society (macrosocial level) and peripheral communities (mesosocial level). 1002 middle school students participated in the research, and the research tool also included the set of questions concerning young people’s parents. Stratified sampling and group sampling were applied. Cultural capital of parents consists of competencies and cultural activities, preferred educational styles and parents ambitions considering the future of their children. While cultural capital of young people includes competencies and cultural activities, personality features and educational ambitions. The smaller peripherality level of populated areas, the greater cultural capital of parents. The greater cultural capital of parents, the higher cultural capital of young people. Low or average level of cultural capital of parents is a burden for young people, although this factor is not strong enough to be the basis to claim that in modern, based on knowledge society the young people from this type of families fight a losing battle.
The aim of the paper is to present how Polish social sciences absorb philosophical and sociological ideas of Pierre Bourdieu. Moreover, it shows how influential such notions as ”habitus” or “cultural capital” are in the area of social and cultural studies in Poland. The article also suggests major trends in the reception of such concepts as "critique of scholastic reason". However, being potentially applicable and adaptable, they are not yet sufficiently known by the Polish scholars.
The article considers relations between economy and culture focusing on the concept of cultural capital. I discuss different uses of the notion of capital as an analytical category in the discourse of social sciences. Then, I analyze Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital in the context of its specific interplay with Marx’s heritage. The main thesis of this text is the claim that both of them used capital in extra-economical meaning and cultural capital in Bourdieu’s theory is nothing more (and nothing less) then symbolic capital. Moreover, the argumentation shows that a basic Marxist dichotomy between economic and cultural causes (base/superstructure) becomes nowadays irrelevant.
This study examines the association between vocational school students' aspirations for higher education and different factors that may be related to their social background. Using cultural reproduction and relative risk aversion (RRA) theories, the study draws on data from 7060 students of four-year vocational upper secondary school programmes in Croatia. A multinomial logistic model with a random intercept was applied, in which students' aspirations for pursuing higher education served as the outcome variable. Apart from indicators of socio-economic status (SES), vocational school students' characteristics related to cultural habits and behaviours, as well as their concerns with downward mobility, were used as regressor variables in the analysis. All three constructs showed independent effects on aspirations for higher education, controlling for vocational sector, gender, school achievement, and school year. Further, a moderation effect was identified, indicating that the association between cultural capital and aspirations for higher education was stronger among students with more educated parents. In contrast to previous studies, the findings point to the potential complementarity of cultural capital and RRA concerning educational aspirations. We discuss the implications of the study and directions for future research.
The hallmark of French thinker undoubtedly is worthy of critical attention. To make this task feasible, the paper focuses not on the secondary literature, but on Bourdieu’s work itself. Thanks to what follows, one is able to establish whether the conception of various capitals stands up to analytical scrutiny. And an outcome of this examination has even broader relevanceBourdieu is the most prolific exponent of an entire trend, much in vogue in social science recently. It would be difficult to indicate a field of inquiry in which this or that unorthodox, extra-economic concept of capital has not been deployed as a research tool. The result of this critical analysis are not encouraging; Bourdieu’s framework is plagued by economism or economic imperialism, and suffers from other limitations as well.
One especially relevant key theme in Sociology of Education is to what extent parents’ cultural level has significant implications in students’ educational achievement and, as a consequence, in the social mobility inherently linked to level of education and professional training – that is, how far the so-called cultural capital has a meaningful influence on current Spanish society. In order to investigate this aspect, our purpose has been to make an analysis based on data coming from public opinion surveys carried out by major sociological and statistical Spanish institutions. Since recently, these data are freely available to researchers, what makes possible the access to viewpoints of large samples of respondents. In short, with a view in the two-generation transit throughout the Spanish educational system, we will observe the validity of patterns of social and cultural inequality still influencing – though not determining – the educational achievement of Spanish population and, therefore, its professional development.
Wyniki te potwierdzają Bourdiańską koncepcję reprodukcji habitusu w rodzinie i oferują wgląd w postawy wschodzących dorosłych wobec uchodźców.

This study examines the relationship between attitudes toward refugees and three forms of capital-economic, cultural, and social-through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus reproduction. Utilizing social distance as a measure of attitudes toward Ukrainian and Southwest Asian refugees, the research posits that these groups differ in cultural proximity to European societies and present distinct challenges to integration policies due to varying scales of inflow. Data were collected from random samples of emerging adults in Greece (n=327) and Poland (n=554). Findings indicate that higher perceived cultural distance correlates with greater social distance. Greek participants exhibited more inclusive attitudes compared to their Polish counterparts. While economic capital did not significantly predict social distance, hierarchical linear modeling revealed associations with social capital-particularly its bridging form-and inherited cultural capital. These results support Bourdieu’s concept of habitus reproduction within the family and offer insights into young adults’ attitudes toward refugees.
This study examines the educational and life ambitions of Roma pupils in Central Slovakia through the lens of cultural capital. Using Bourdieu’s concept, it analyses how family background, socio-economic conditions, and cultural resources shape students’ academic outcomes. Based on surveys and field research conducted in two schools with a high Roma population, the findings indicate that limited cultural capital and poverty constrain educational opportunities. Despite these barriers, school initiatives and teacher support help to mitigate these disadvantages, fostering a positive reading culture and student aspirations. The study emphasizes the need for parental engagement, support structures, and policy measures to enhance educational outcomes for Roma pupils.
Aim. Our contribution focuses on comparing two methods of administration (traditional paper-based and electronic) regarding children's performance in evaluating their vocabulary using the Cross-Linguistic Lexical Tasks (LITMUS CLT-sk). Methods. To assess the equivalence of both administration methods, the frequency distributions of raw scores in all four subtests were compared in a sample of N = 89 monolingual Slovak-speaking children (age range 44 – 71 months, Mean = 58.46; SD = 7.79). We compared two groups of children, where age and gender were the controlled variables, as usual. However, we are aware that the family's socioeconomic status and the literacy environment significantly impact a child's language development. Therefore, we controlled the other factor, which was the family's cultural capital, defined by the highest education level of the parents and reading behavior in the family. Results. The results of linear regression demonstrated that neither the method of administration nor the gender of the tested children affected their performance in the lexical task. Conversely, the ability to produce and understand nouns and verbs was significantly associated with age and the level of the family's cultural capital, nor the gender of the tested children affected their performance in the lexical task. Conversely, age was the only factor significantly associated with the ability to produce nouns (p < .001) and produce verbs (p = .008) and to a lesser extent, with the ability to understand verbs (p = .08). The noun com- prehension subtest shows a ceiling effect, which likely limits sufficient differentiation of perfor- mance within the observed sample of children.
The article addresses the subject of social and cultural inequalities in relation to the situation of children in degraded spaces of selected courtyards in one of the smallest housing estates in Wrocław, Poland, Przedmieście Oławskie. The aim of the research was to diagnose and describe the specific situation of these children and to analyse it in the context of Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of reproducing cultural capital. The first part presents theoretical threads relevant for further interpretations and covers the concepts of marginalisation and reproduction of cultural capital as perceived in P. Bourdieu`s theories. The second part discusses the methodology of qualitative research, embedded in an interpretive paradigm and based on: ethnographicresearch strategy, the approach to research with children and the mosaic approach. The third part presents the results of research showing the specificity of the physical and socio-cultural environment of the studied courtyards. On the one hand, the dimensions of its marginalisation and the processes proving the reproduction of poor cultural capital were indicated; on the other hand, examples of artistic interventions in this type of marginalised environment were presented as exemplifications of breaking the mechanisms of cultural reproduction.
This paper identifies the most significant patterns of educational experience among members of the interwar Polish communist movement. The first part of the article covers the experiences that communists shared with other representatives of the social strata from which they originated: the reproduction of the social structure or their overcoming of it in the form of social advancement. It also discusses the importance of educational barriers and opportunities as factors facilitating the emergence of attitudes of radical contestation of the socio-political order. The second part identifies educational experiences that were directly related to involvement in an illegal, subversive and repressed political current, and the diverse, sometimes paradoxical consequences of that involvement for representatives of different social strata. It traces the transformations of the communist habitus and proposes the concept of ‘clandestine white-collar workers’. The article concludes that there were two patterns in the pursuit of education among the communists: acquiring a degree in revolution or for the sake of the revolution.
The aim of the article is to identify the main features and specificity of the material cultural capital of Wielkopolska region towns, the core of which is the stock of immovable monuments. In the first part, the concept of cultural capital is briefly presented and the specificity of monuments as capital is explained, focusing on the values that are assigned to monuments. This provided a theoretical basis for the characterisation of the stock of immovable monuments in Wielkopolska region towns, which constitute their material cultural capital. It has been characterized in terms of the main cultural values (historical and semiotic) and use value. The analysis was carried out according to the size categories of towns (small, medium and large), which made it possible to discover the specificity of cultural capital in these cities. The results of the conducted research indicate a significant cultural capital of small towns, the potential of which is associated with sacred buildings, urban layouts, as well as manors and palaces.

Został on scharakteryzowany w ujęciu głównych wartości kulturowych (historycznej i semiotycznej) oraz wartości użytkowej.
The article analyzes the changes in attitude of Poles towards sport and recreational activities as well as their participation in these disciplines between the period before system transformations and the present day. Based on examples from literature and own studies, we have observed that Poles have shown a growing interest in sport and recreational activities. Moreover, social diversity of participants in this field has been noted. Sport disciplines and diverse recreational activities perceived as "bourgeois" during the socialist period are becoming more popular among members of the middle and upper classes as potential attractive and clear markers of social status. Interest in sport, skills, knowledge, and sports equipment and outfit in such disciplines as sailing, horse riding, golf, and hunting are thus becoming distinctive social markers. These factors are adopted in the reconstruction of sports practiced by members of different social classes. The continuity of sport practice was abruptly interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War and the following half-century of socialism
This text is an attempt to reconstruct how emigrants from Poland adapted to the living conditions in Scottish society after Poland acceded to the European Union. Using the functional perspective, four potential forms of migrant adaptation were defined according to their relations with the social system of the host country. Assimilation, integration, marginalisation, and isolation were distinguished as four essential types occurring with different intensities and frequencies. The adaptation of migrants to new living conditions was analysed using these forms concerning the following three critical dimensions of human existence: the material, the cultural, and the social. It makes it possible to show the diversity of the adaptation strategies according to gender and the problem of working in jobs below one’s skill level. On the other hand, the analysis of the cultural and social dimensions made it possible to identify issues related to the accumulation of family social capital and difficulties in transferring cultural capital between the two countries. The survey also showed that Polish migrants have a high integration potential. However, situations where unfavourable or negative experiences of migrants intensify, may constitute a fundamental basis for developing an adaptation strategy that will result in the marginalisation of this group.
