The article describes the long-standing tradition of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń to include legacies left by Toruń scientists in the fond of the University’s Archive. So far, 82 archival legacies left by the University’s staff and people associated with it were incorporated into the fond of the Archive of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, including those of 59 professors, 4 docents, 8 scholars with a Ph.D. degree, 10 scholars with an MA degree, as well as one that had belonged to Henrietta and Friedrich Lange, members of the University’s administrative staff, whose level of education remains unknown. The author examined the selected legacies and then performed detailed analysis. In the conclusion, she emphasized that all these legacies are an excellent source for learning about the creative and academic work of their previous owners, and sometimes even the history of the entire institution. Files collected in personal archives can be used by researchers from many disciplines for various scientific purposes. The article is supplemented by a table containing a list of legacies left by the University’s staff and people associated with it in the years 1966–2020, in alphabetical order.

W podsumowaniu podkreśliła, że wszystkie spuścizny stanowią doskonałą bazę źródłową w procesie poznania twórczości i działalności naukowej aktotwórców, a niekiedy historii danej instytucji.
The fonds of the Józef Piłsudski Institute (JPI) and the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America (PIASA) constitute an important part of Polish cultural legacy outside the country. Despite the different origins and focus, the two institutes collect and store documentation on the history of Poland, emigration and Polish-American relations. Both institutes contributed to the Polish struggle for freedom and independence after 1945. They also represented Polish culture, science and art in the United States. The two organisations serve as archives, libraries and museums, as well as serving as research facilities. The main problem faced by both of these institutions is the lack of funds which could be used to store and secure their fonds, as well as the lack of qualified staff necessary to analyse and share it. Using their own resources and with the help of the Ministry of Culture and National Legacy and the State Archives Directorate, they categorise, analyse, make available and digitise archival materials. The documents are available to researchers at the institutions’ headquarters and partially also online. Partnership with relevant institutions in Poland aimed at solving location-related, financial and staffing issues can protect them from being destroyed.
Personal archives and collections constitute a modest yet significant part of the archival fonds of the Institute of National Remembrance. They complement the rest of the collection, which consists of materials produced or collected by Poland’s security services during the communist period. Due to their specificity and origin, they constitute a remarkably interesting group of archival sources popular with scholars of the contemporary history of Poland. The article focuses on the formal and legal aspects of collecting, analysing and making available personal archival materials from personal collections and archives. Special focus is given to the circumstances in which such materials could be acquired by the Archive and the legal regulations governing such acquisitions. The author also presents the rules of sharing such archival materials, noting that, in principle, they are available to researchers and journalists without major restrictions. The most interesting personal archives and collections available in the Archive of the Warsaw and other field branches of the Institute are also presented.
Private provenance teams and collections have been part of the area of interest of the Institute of National Remembrance since its inception. Such material currently constitutes a relatively small, but significant part of the resources used in many areas of the Institute’s activity. They have been collected pursuant to the provisions of the Act of 18 December 1998 regarding the Institute of National Remembrance – Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation, strictly defining the chronological and material scope of the documentation obtained. As a result, acquisitions with specific features go to the resources of the IPN Archive, which in turn involves the occurrence of methodological problems during the development of the materials. The article discusses the basic issues related to the collection and processing of private archives in the IPN Archive, and a general description of this type of material that was received between 2000–2018.

The wide scope of the concept “social archive” raises terminological difficulties that contemporary archival science faces. Referring to the definition of “archive”, formulated by Bohdan Ryszewski, the author suggests – from the point of view of archival science considered both as a scientific discipline and field of practice – to recognize the following as a “social archive”: 1) organizations (institutions) or their departments specifically dealing with archival materials created by specific social groups, 2) archival collections – archival resources created by a specific social group, 3) storage locations for archival materials whose creators, or more precisely archivists, were specific social groups. The author considers this social provenance of the created, collected, stored, developed and shared archives as crucial in recognizing and granting the status of a social archive, considered from the point of view of archival science. In addition to the social archives defined in the three aforementioned meanings which create or will create a national archive resource, there are many so-called social archives (in the colloquial sense), which collect and store documentation of social life in the form of various collections. This type of activity is dealt with by departments of social life documentation organized by many institutions, mainly libraries and museums. In English terminology, this movement is referred to as LAM (Libraries, Archives, Museums). The correlations, or in principle, the ambiguity of social archive used in the various meanings are shown with specific examples.

Tę społeczną proweniencję wytworzonych, zgromadzonych, przechowywanych, opracowywanych i udostępnianych archiwaliów autorka uważa za kluczową w uznaniu i przyznaniu statusu archiwum społecznego rozpatrywanego z punktu widzenia archiwistyki.
The Manuscript Section of the Toruń University Library is part of the state archive network as, in addition to library manuscripts, it also collects and stores archival materials, which constitute approx. 80–90% of the entire manuscript collection. Thus, despite formally being part of the library collections, the Manuscript Section primarily includes archival materials, the majority of which are private archives, most frequently belonging to research fellows employed by Nicolaus Copernicus University. The section currently consists of 87 fonds or fonds fragments which can be categorised as private archives. Until 2007, the Manuscript Section of the Toruń University Library catalogued its materials in a traditional fashion, i.e. using catalogue cards, and an electronic system was partially introduced in 2008. In 2018, private archives also began to undergo digitisation, with the aim of gradually making them available online.
Artykuł przedstawia zasady i główne kierunki antropologizowania archiwistyki i dziedziny archiwalnej na Białorusi. Rozpoczyna się od przedstawienia zasad teoretycznych archiwistyki wypracowanych w Związku Radzieckim, a wykorzystywanych w praktyce archiwów białoruskich, dalej analizuje dorobek polskich uczonych, którzy wprowadzili termin i wypracowali pojęcie „antrolologizowania archiwistyki”, wreszcie charakteryzuje białoruskie działania prowadzące do tworzenia archiwów chroniących pamięć o działalności konkretnych ludzi.

The article is devoted to research of the main directions and principles of the antropologization of archival science and practices in Belarus. Analysis of theoretical representations starts with the ideas of the Soviet school of an archival science, which appear the ground for the work of the Belarusian archives. The special attention is given to researches of the Polish archivists, where the concept "antropologization of archival science" was used for the first time, and its specifics is defined. By consideration of practical experience of the Belarusian archives presented the aspiration to hold the documents of the concrete personality. Synthesis of the previous theoretical development and available experience in this direction gives an opportunity to mark its main characteristics. As a result was made the conclusion that the anthropological direction of an archival science is one of the most perspective in Belarusian realities, and can become the basis for creation of a new type of archives and preservation of the valuable complex of historical sources.
