The paper examines the activity of E. Jona in the field of language culture. The analysis is concentrated on two fields, firstly, on the practical problems of language culture, secondly, on the evaluation of the complete language situation from the thirties up to the eighties of the 20th century. The practical sphere is covered especially by those papers which were published in the periodical Slovenska rec. Some older papers are not relevant to current language situation, but a great number of them solve questions, which are problematic even nowadays. Very important is the opinion of E. Jona for the question on language correctness or incorrectness. He was persuaded that there is no sufficient only linguists opinion; but very important is a contemporary language usage and also dialects, which are to be taken into the consideration. Further, the paper reflects the views of E. Jona for the complicated language situation after 1945. He believed that forced tendencies to convergences and divergences in the past caused damage to the nation and to the language as well. Several of these problems are topical also nowadays.
The article gives an analytical overview of outputs focused on theories of standard language and language culture, published in the Slovenská reč journal. The aim of the paper is to provide an analysis of the development of the theories in the form of a commented summary of relevant theoretical approaches providing fundamental findings with regard to the state of the art in the given period or possible concepts for the development of the theory under study. In this respect, the article is divided in accordance with the time periods of: (a) 1930s and 1940s, (b) from 1950s to 1980s, (c) from 1990s to the present. Within these periods, the author pays special attention to the key contributions, authors’ concepts and current thematic controversies that tended to determine the focus of continuing debates, or were important landmarks in the improvement of the research in the field. The analysis shows that the line of development of theoretical thinking in the field of the Slovak standard language and its culture finds its main supporting points in specific theoretical conceptions of prominent representatives of Slovak linguistics throughout the whole period.
This study examines the way university students use programs for text correction. The research was carried out in four departments specialized in a media or journalistic focus. We have put together a questionnaire (basic research results were published in 2014). We examined the outcomes to know the limits of these programs by students of journalism and media. The results indicated that their knowledge about this problem is not very well. Many students could not name even one phenomenon that Word with an editing function was not able to correct. Those who specified at least one phenomenon, mostly identified the inability to distinguish between singular and plural (31%) and inability to correct spelling of foreign words and words that occur in a computer program (29,8 %). Most respondents relied on computer programs completely or partly and never verified with codification handbooks.
The study is a response to the question: How has this society developed since the time of Ľ. Štúr from the point of view of the dynamics of national unity conditioned by the democratization of standard Slovak? For the development of the Slovak nation in the light of this language, democratization was of decisive importance, namely the control of the codified standard, and therefore linguistic correctness, and language-communication normality. The democratization of the codified norm and thus linguistic correctness has become the basis of the perception of language culture and a means of integrating the Slovaks as a national collective, ensuring their formal unity. The direction of the democratization of linguistic correctness is the optimal language culture as the control of a codified standard by basically every Slovak, but the democratization of the standard language also leads to the fact that it becomes the general mother tongue and natural linguistic correctness, i.e. natural language culture, is gradually enforced. This correctness and this culture are already manifestations of the transition of the national collective into a development phase of deeper – content, „true“ (according to Štúr) – unity and shifting attention from language to communication culture. The democratization of language-communication normality, which takes place as the expansion of the circle of „intimate language experts“ in the implementation of the adaptive potential of the language, in which the peculiarity of the mental culture – the „spirit of the nation“ – is manifested, is of fundamental importance for the turning point in the reorientation of the speakers of the standard language towards the communication culture. At this stage of development, the optimization of language culture grows into the optimization of communication culture governed by the principle of inclusion. In the Slovak language community, the discourse on authentic communication culture, based on a sense of collective identity, is becoming relevant.
