Both in the past and today an act of bearing witness to faith in God through martyrdom has been a unique sign and testimony of love for Christ who himself was obedient to the Father usque ad mortem. It is at the same time a clear judgment against those cultures, which acknowledge odium fidei. In his moral encyclical Veritatis Splendor John Paul II points to several arguments in order to emphasize that the way of martyrdom has lost none of its relevance and significance for Christians nowadays. The Pope’s claim is grounded on the fact that “faith possesses a moral content” and so it is false to separate faith (credenda) from moral life (agenda) of those who believe. Consequently, in particular circumstances Christians are called to be ready to lay their lives both for love of God and acceptance of his commandments. Through imitating their Lord usque ad sanguinem his disciples demonstrate and defend their human dignity received from the Creator, the holiness of God’s law as well as the holiness of the Church.

Stąd świadectwo męczeństwa potwierdza blask prawdy moralnej, a więc zobowiązującą wierność wymaganiom prawa moralnego wypływającym z godności osoby ludzkiej, ukazuje świętość prawa Bożego, a zarazem jawi sie jako znak świętości Kościoła.

In the tradition of the allegorical interpretation of the Song of Songs the Bridegroom of the Song of Songs represents Christ, meanwhile the bride represents the Church. The verse 8,2 shows us the Bride satiating the thirst of the Bridegroom. In the article we tried to analyze and reflect on the commentaries of the Fathers of the Church and medieval writers to this verse in connection with the charisma of Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity centered on the mystery of Jesus' "I thirst" on the cross. The main streams ofthe Christian tradition interpreted the spiced vine in connection with the love of God and the juice of pomegranates in connection with martyrdom.

Freedom constitutes an essential idea in the Christian spirituality. Freedom was also an important dimension in the life and teaching of blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko. The author of the article analyzes freedom in the philosophical-theological and cultural dimension, mainly as freedom „to” something and freedom „from” limits. These dimensions are interwoven in the analysis of freedom in the national and political sense.

Wolność należy do istotnych pojęć duchowości chrześcijańskiej.

EN
The article focuses on the difference between murder or suicide and the act of martyrdom. The arguments refer to John Paul II’s teaching on absolute moral norms and John Finnis’ theory of basic human goods. The core of the text is a discussion with the approach of Finnis who claims that a martyr merely accepts her own death as a side-effect of her other intentional action; the discussion is based on Aquinas’s insights (mainly in "Summa theologiae") and aims to show that death is not merely an accepted side−effect, but somehow enters into the specification of the act of martyrdom. The general conclusion is that the difference between martyrdom and suicide or murder requires a refined theory of intentional action, as opposed to non−intentional effecting of something, and also, above all, calls for still more diligent study of what exactly the prime and proper objects of practical reason, of proposal, of choice and of action itself are.

400-lecie męczeństwa św. Jozafata Kuncewicza stanowi okazję do przyjrzenia się działalności biskupa w Połocku. Autor artykułu ukazuje reformatorską działalność abp Jozafata wychodząc od uwarunkowań historycznych diecezji połockiej w pocz. XVI w. Podkreśla konieczność reform w dziedzinie duchowej i moralnej. W artykule wykorzystano materiały z procesu beatyfikacyjnego i kanonizacyjnego św. Jozafata oraz najważniejszych opracowań życiorysu Świętego w języku polskim. Autor podkreśla aktualność metod działania reformatorskiego św. Jozafata. Uwydatnia rolę dialogu jako skutecznego narzędzia ewangelizacji.

400th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Jozafat Kuncewicz is an op-portunity to look at the bishopʼs activities in Polotsk. The author of the article begins presenting the reforming activity of Archbishop Josaphat by depicting historical conditions of the Polotsk diocese in the beginning of the 16th century. He emphasizes the need for reforms in the spiritual and moral field. This church at the time was in a state of deep economic, moral and spiritual crisis. The Archbishop focused on raising the intellectual and moral level of the clergy through diocesan synods, promoting the Catechism and the rules of priestly life. He targeted vices such as drinking, gambling addiction, and greed. He demanded his priests follow the rules of priestly life proper to the Church. Josaphat also undertook the work of moral and religious upliftment of the lay faithful. He used sermons and personal dialogue as a tool to combat widespread religious ignorance. He encouraged people to go to confession frequently and regularly participate in the Eucharist. The article draws on materials from the beatification and canonization process of St. Josaphat and the most important studies of the Saintʼs biography in Polish. The author emphasizes the relevance of Saint Josaphat’s reforming methods. He highlights the value of dialogue as an effective tool of evangelization.

In the history of the Church one finds an event wherein a mother wasquestioned in the beatification process of her son. This occurred in the caseof Marianna Popiełuszko, who before the court of beatification in Warsawin 1997, responded to all the questions put to her in order to assess the lifeand work of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko as a candidate for sainthood by Churchauthorities. From these testimonies there emerges an interesting picture of the lifeand death of Fr. Popiełuszko, as well as his faith and steadfastness. It helpsto read the true intentions which were of a religious nature that guided himduring his activity. Moreover, this confirms the martyrological nature ofhis death, in which what counts is not only the anguish inflicted, but thereason for one’s achievements. This also demonstrates that martyrdom wasthe crowning achievement of his life of faith and love, which was associatedwith forgiveness that is opposed to hatred or vengeance. This vision of martyrdom is consistent with the classical understandingof martyrdom in the Church, which is not limited only to the moment ofdeath, but applies to the entire life of the martyr.

Nullum martyrium" entsprechend „causa mała" non fecit martyrem.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the murder of the parish priest of st. John Bosco in Luboń, made on February27, 1938 by a communist agitator. Despite the fact that so many years have passed since the priest’s death, the matter raises many emotions to this day, because the pastoraland social activity of rev. Steich left behind abundant and blessed fruits, and he himself became a candidate for the glory of the altars on the way of martyrdom. In the canonization inquiry aimed at recognizing martyrdom, the Church pays special attention to the need to accept death, as exemplified by Christ, and reminds us that from ancient times martyrdom was compared to water baptism and was called the baptism of blood. However, this does notchange the fact that the essential elements to be considered in such proceedings, conducted in this way, are: indication of a specific person of the martyr and the persecutor, proof of the actual death, as well as the cause of death. All these areas of research not only appear in the“crime of Luboń”, but confirm and ensure that the Servant of God, rev. Stanisław Streich is an in odium fidei martyr, and his beatification is a matter of time.

The article focuses the story of the martyrdom of 60 Christian soldiers in Gaza who were executed for their refusal to convert to Islam during the Muslim invasion of Palestine. It is a final episode of varied Christian history of that region. Christian history of Gaza appears as complex and fascinating. In this region in the 4th century paganism was still strong but the monastic life developed in the vicinity of Gaza. Literary sources annotated the anti-Chalcedonian resistance of monastic circles in the wake of the council of Chalcedon. Christian history of the Gaza region ended dramatically with the Arab conquest in the 7th century. Just at that time a group of Christian soldiers refused the offer of the commander of the winners Muslims. The narrative of their martyrdom was preserved in a Latin translation of a Greek original. According to the text of the Passio, the Christian soldiers were executed in two groups: at Jerusalem and at Eleutheropolis. Bishop Sophronius of Jerusalem intervened in favor of these Martyrs and comforted them. He also gained the palm of martyrdom. The Passio in two different Latin recensions reveals a relatively neglected aspect in the history of the Holy Land during the period of heightened religious tension.

By martyrdom a disciple takes likeness to his Master, who voluntarily accepted death for the salvation of the world, and follows Him right until the shedding of blood. For this reason the Church values martyrs as excellent gifts and greatest proofs of love. Martyrdom and the calling to martyrdom are not results of human decision and effort, but answers to God’s initiative and calling. When God calls a person to give this testimony of love, He enables him for this calling, and gives him the ability to live in this loving way of life, and bear witness to faith. This creates a live communion between Christ and the martyr, where the martyr can draw strength for his decision.

The article presents a review of historic proposals for the identification of the mysterious Two Witnesses from Rev 11,3-13. This problem has been repeatedly undertaken in the history of exegesis, which results in a very large number of proposed solutions with a wide thematic scope. In order to organize the data, the proposals were divided into four groups – interpretations referring to the Old Testament and to the New Testament, extra-biblical identifications and symbolic identifications. In each group were presented several proposals and basic arguments put forward by individual researchers. It has also been noted that such a large number of proposed interpretations makes it difficult to present the whole issue concisely and very thoroughly, and therefore at the outset it is necessary to narrow the scope of research. In conclusion, the symbolic way of interpreting the text seems to be the most appropriate.
