Objective: The problem of financial exclusion is closely correlated to the development of the financial market, also in the regional aspect. In less developed countries ignored by commercial financial institutions, the only chance for the community lies with local financial institutions focused on the implementation of social goals. These can be, for example, microfinance institutions focused on serving poor and socially excluded people. Currently, microfinance institutions run their operations all over the world, in the richest countries and in poor ones. The aim of this article is to define and present the problem of financial exclusion and to examine microfinance as a way of mitigating the problem. Microfinance helps to mitigate financial exclusion, enabling social inclusion for many people via financial products tailored to their needs. Research Design & Methods: The research offers conclusions based on analysis of data and reports published by microfinance institutions and deductive and inductive reasoning. Findings: The research results show that financial inclusion plays a vital role in economic development and poverty alleviation. In order to improve access and usage of banking products, it is also necessary to increase financial awareness and knowledge. MFIs should strive to achieve social goals. Implications/Recommendations: Microfinance institutions all over the world should strive to achieve social goals through a wide range of microfinance products, and not only through microcredit. In order to increase the impact of microfinance institutions and achieve social goals, a scenario for the functioning of MFIs was proposed. This scenario assumes co-implementation of social and commercial goals, which is a condition of retaining the idea of microfinance. Contribution: The article presents the proposed model of microfinance activity which takes into account social goals and the digitisation of activities.

Financial exclusion can be considered as one of the important problems in countries at the average level of socioeconomic development that include, among others, Poland. It consists in the presence of difficulties in accessing and/or using financial products and services available on the main market that meet the needs of individuals, which prevents them from leading a normal life in society. Due to its own characteristics and trends in financial markets, this phenomenon is closely linked to the issue of the digital divide. Accordingly, it can be seen that solutions leading to the reduction of financial exclusion are based on tools using information technology innovations and modern technologies. One of the methods recognised as the most effective in this area is financial education, aimed largely at children and adolescents, which additionally justifies the choice of such tools. It is equally important to determine the extent to which modern instruments are preferred in comparison with traditional ones. The aim of this paper will be the analysis of the solutions based on modern technologies that are used in actions taken to prevent financial exclusion in selected EU countries, including Poland. The structure of the paper is as follows: the first part will present the problem of financial exclusion (identifying groups particularly at risk), then a review of methods of preventing and combating financial exclusion will be presented, with particular emphasis on modern ICT tools, and the final part will indicate possible directions and barriers to the solutions that may lead to a reduced level of financial exclusion of individuals. The methods used include an in-depth analysis of the literature and a review of existing solutions which financial institutions provide on the Web.

Advising is one of the fundamental duties of employees of banks, who sell financial products and services. It plays a key role in the context of making more rational decisions by customers, and most importantly it is not always a synonymous to the sale of banking products and services. The role of the bank advisor also includes an educational component associated with raising the level of financial awareness and substantive knowledge in the field of economics and finance. These activities can contribute both to perform the tasks of each employee of the bank, as well as limit the phenomenon of financial exclusion, at the basis of which is limited access to the individual banking products and services. The purpose of this article is to present the role of bank advisor in reducing the negative consequences of financial exclusion as well as to introduce point of views of bank advisors about the advising that they provide to clients in the banking sector.

Today financial literacy and consciousness seems to be indispensable for the proper participation in the financial services market. In the face of the financialization process, the lack of or even insufficient financial knowledge and consciousness, can lead to serious consequences, including financial exclusion. Financial consciousness can be defined as a phenomenon connected with being aware of financial incidents and processes and having the capability to explore and evaluate these phenomena, or as a complex psychological formation acting to control one’s financial behaviour. Financial literacy is a part of financial consciousness. This article shows how and in what way financial literacy and consciousness are responsible for the financial exclusion diagnosed in the survey. The aim of the article is to answer the question whether the lack of or insufficient financial literacy can be responsible for financial exclusion.

Research background: According to the World Bank (2020), about 60% of adults in developing countries do not use formal financial services. Furthermore, according to the Polish Association of Loan Institutions (2022), about 3 million Poles use loans, most of them obtained online. Among the reasons for more than a decade of growth of interest in the non-bank consumer lending market there are the development of modern technology applications in finance and the establishment of the Lendtech sector. Purpose of the article: The main goal of the paper is to verify the role played by the Lendtech (LT) sector in the consumer credit market in the context of household financial exclusion. The following research questions were asked: Do credit-excluded households take advantage of LT services and, if so, to what extent? What are the behaviours and preferences of those who use consumer credit offered by LT? Do socio-demographic characteristics determine consumer use of loans offered by LT and, if so, what are they? Is the use of loans offered by LT due to credit exclusion or other factors? What action should be taken by participants in the digital consumer loan market interested in its inclusive direction? Methods: The paper uses the following methods: critical analysis of the literature, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney test, and nonparametric regression algorithm: k-nearest neighbors, as well as inductive inference methods. The data used is primary in nature and comes from a nationwide survey, September 2022 (CAWI method) of 1,200 Poles, of whom 200 respondents are Lendtech customers. The quota selection applied made it possible to reflect characteristics corresponding to the population of customers of lending institutions registered in BIK databases. Findings & value added: The article is a pioneering study based on an independent scientific survey, devoted to the Polish LT services market considered in terms of its relationship with one of the types of financial exclusion: credit exclusion. The most important conclusion is that people at risk of credit exclusion find a financing substitute in the LT sector, and thus it plays an important role in reducing financial exclusion, while maintaining the principle of creditworthiness verification.

Economic education is becoming increasingly essential for modern societies to function. It consists of three aspects: knowledge, skills and attitudes, and if such aspects remain at a low level, the people it concerns are susceptible to financial exclusion. Due to dynamic changes occurring in financial markets, knowledge quickly becomes outdated and needs to be frequently updated. People with disabilities fall into this group of people at risk of social exclusion, usually displaying lower participation in the educational system (although this has been changing) and facing greater difficulties in the labour market. A hypothesis has been posed that economic education may contribute to the social inclusion of people with disabilities, and the determined goal was to demonstrate the existence of the need for financial education targeted at people with disabilities to make them less susceptible to the risk of social and financial exclusion. This goal was achieved through critical analysis of the literature on the subject, and by way of deduction. The author’s research demonstrated that economic education is a tool that contributes to reducing the risk of social and financial exclusion, and therefore economic education should be primarily targeted at the groups most susceptible to the risk of exclusion, including, among others, people with disabilities. The paper demonstrates that Poland also lacks measures that would contribute to the level of economic knowledge of that social group.

This article presents an analysis of the issue of financial exclusion, outlining how this phenomenon is defined, the causes of its occurrence, and its consequences for individuals and households. The study characterises approaches to counteracting financial exclusion through the implementation of innovations in the market for banking products and services, using examples of solutions introduced by selected banks in Poland. Based on an analysis of the content of banking reports from 2020–2023, the actions and solutions of selected banks were assessed with respect to factors playing a significant role in evaluating financial exclusion, with innovative banking products and services aimed at counteracting financial exclusion identified and categorised. The findings were then compared with the results of a survey designed to show how the issue of exclusion is perceived from the perspective of households and identify their expectations in this area, which was conducted using CAWI and CAPI methods and supported by computer-assisted data analysis tools. The results are presented in the form of charts, tables and a list of recommendations regarding financial exclusion and proposed future actions by relevant institutions.

The issue of financial exclusion has been the topic of scientific research for decades now. Each and every individual may become excluded with respect to an array of criteria, such as for instance educational background, income level, financial status, nationality, religion or even lifestyle. This means they are not allowed to perform certain social activities, even though they are both able and willing to undertake them. This unfavourable condition is usually caused by other people’s reluctance. The article addresses the issues of the perception of financial exclusion by female Poles on the basis of the results of a survey. Firstly, the awareness of the problem of financial exclusion among Polish female respondents is presented. Secondly, the causes of the phenomenon are elaborated on, as well as the types of individuals potentially endangered by such an exclusion. Finally, the outcome of research is provided in terms of the evaluation of the phenomenon’s range in Poland and identification of the risk of self-exclusion. Moreover, entities in charge of counteracting the risk of financial exclusion are indicated by the respondents in question.

The doctoral dissertation presents the causes of establishment of social cooperative, an institution relatively new in the Polish legal system. The main interest in this context is the concept of social exclusion, as a phenomenon socially momentous and extremely complex, and underlying formation of subjects such as social cooperative. Due to the non-uniform understanding of the term social exclusion in the literature, the author proposes a new definition of it. The doctoral thesis contains a discussion on the role of the social cooperative in the fight against the phenomena of social and financial exclusion, as well as synthetic overview of the history of legislation that led to the adoption of the bill on social cooperatives.

Zrównoważony rozwój według definicji sformułowanej w 1987 r. w Raporcie Światowej Komisji Środowiska i Rozwoju to „proces mający na celu zaspokojenie aspiracji rozwojowych obecnego pokolenia, w sposób umożliwiający realizację tych samych dążeń następnym pokole-niom”.

Sustainable development, according to definition established in 1987 in the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development is: process ”which implies meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Today three inseparable pillars of sustainable development are identified: society, envi-ronment and economy. The Rio Declaration characterizes human as subject of sustainable devel-opment and indicates right for healthy and productive life in harmony with nature. Sustainable development points necessity of combating poverty and its’ consequences in all forms, including social and financial exclusion. Financial sector is an important element of every economy, which role is making possible ex-change transactions with use of different forms of money and without which it is difficult to imag-ine functioning of human civilization. Concurrently, that sector is the source of many problems and crises and in consequence affecting whole societies. Sustainable development is the founda-tion of healthy economy and financial institutions are of great importance in that process. Societies are entitled to expect banks’ activities on combating social inequality, injustice and social tensions, combating poverty, prevent financial exclusion. That’s why activity of banks conducted in favor of society should fill in sustainable development. The purpose of the paper is to present concept of sustainable development, especially while taking into account it’s social aspect, indicate legal base of sustainable development in Poland and conditions and possibilities of realization of it’s assumptions. In the article the analysis of importance of banking sector for socially sustainable development has been conducted on basis of literature research.

Dynamic development of technology, increasing popularity of Internet, better availability of devices allowing easy access to Internet such as laptops, tablets or smartphones, as well as easy access to broad spectrum of information, has caused significant diversification and transformation of the society. Nowadays we can talk about information society where the main value is information and the services associated with it. A trend is being observed of moving traditional services into the Internet and developing services being there already. Part of the society has been deprived of, for various reasons, the possibility to actively participate in many aspects of the public life. An indication of civilization’s development level is the access of its citizens to modern technologies and their usage. For one part of the society, getting information is quick, simple and independent from factors like time and location. The other part of the society, due to the lack of such capabilities, is digitally excluded. This digital divide causes yet another type of exclusion – inability to access Internet banking services – financial exclusion. In this paper comparative analysis of Poland and Norway has been conducted (also referring to the EU average) regarding the digital and financial exclusion, accessibility of information available in the Internet, factors differentiating those two countries, especially the usage of Internet banking, treated as the main cause for financial exclusion. Security and financial losses aspects have also been discussed in this paper – as one of the potential drivers of the financial exclusion.

The main goal of the research was to assess the impact of the pandemic crisis on the level of financial exclusion of the inhabitants of the south-eastern region of Poland and to identify the factors determining this financial exclusion. The detailed scope of the research covers the administrative area of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. The pandemic period adversely affected many areas of social and economic life. One such area is the level of financial exclusion, which has significantly affected people on low incomes, often living in villages and small towns. South-eastern Poland, including the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, is still one of the economically weaker regions. It should be emphasised that the Podkarpackie Voivodeship has an agricultural and industrial character. It has the largest percentage of people living in villages in the country (58.6%). Following this line of reasoning, the study covered the inhabitants of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship whose places of residence are located in counties with the lowest average monthly gross salary in relation to the national average, and for the purpose of a comparative analysis, inhabitants of the largest voivodeship city – Rzeszów.The research used the diagnostic survey method, and the responses were statistically analysed to observe the relationship between the features: age, sex, education, etc. and a comparative analysis of individual counties. In addition, the method of literature analysis was used, including previous research on similar topics from the period before the pandemic.Based on the research, it can be concluded that people from the counties selected for the study much more often combine financial exclusion with unemployment and low wages. They are concerned about the stability of their income and believe that they are financially excluded. Similar relationships were observed for people over 46 years of age and for people whose average monthly net income per person in the household is less than PLN 1,000.

The article draws attention to the problem of ambiguity in the description of financial exclusion. The previous approach to the problem of financial exclusion in the literature indicates discrepancies in the measurement of the phenomenon, both in type and area. The result of these discrepancies is, among others, a different methodological approach, lack of uniform measures of financial exclusion. The aim of the study is to present terminological differences in the description and measurement of the phenomenon of financial exclusion. In addition, the characteristics of the transition stage, financial exclusion, which should constitute an intermediate stage between full financial inclusion and financial exclusion, have been made.

Oszacowana odległość do punktów wypłaty gotówki wraz z charakterystyką respondentów dotyczącą stanu posiadania rachunku płatniczego pozwoliła na identyfikację związku pomiędzy dostępem do gotówki a wykluczeniem finansowym.

Purpose: The aim of the article is to examine if difficulty of access to cash may influence the financial exclusion in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis was performed using microdata collected in the survey on payment habits of Polish consumers and spatial data on ATMs locations. Estimated distance to points where cash can be withdrawn together with feature of respondents of the state of possession of a payment account helps to identify relationships between access to cash and financial exclusion. To prove significance of the relationship, a statistical test is used. Findings: The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the existence of a real risk associated with the problem of the physical availability of cash, which is caused by the systematic reduction of the network of ATMs and commercial bank branches handling cash, which are the main points where consumers can withdraw it. This may consequently lead to financial and social exclusion of certain groups of consumers for whom cash is the main, or even the only, means of making payments. Results support the thesis that payment account without (real) option of easy access to cash may discourage consumers from opening the account and contribute to increased financial exclusion. It is especially visible in rural regions and small towns where we observe high level of exclusion (lack of payment accounts) and longer distance to the nearest ATM. Research limitations/implications: The presented results were based on simple statistical analyses. Further research should include econometric modeling using logit/probit models. Originality/value: The obtained results are the first on the impact of access to cash on financial exclusion in Poland and consistent with the situation in other European countries. The results allow to show the importance of access to physical money in a broader context than just having means of payment to pay for purchases.

Celem opracowania jest zdiagnozowanie barier i zidentyfikowanie wyzwań stojących przed systemem usług finansowych w Polsce w kontekście rozpowszechnienia usług płatności bezgotówkowych wśród ludności wiejskiej. Struktura ilościowa i wartościowa płatności w różnych placówkach handlowych potwierdza istnienie konserwatywnej postawy przywiązania do gotówki utożsamianej wciąż z bezpieczeństwem obrotu.

Socio-demographic features differentiated significantly habits of users of financial services, thus allowing a partial segmentation. The aim of the study is to diagnose and identify barriers and challenges facing the system of financial services in Poland – in the context of the prevalence of non-cash payment services among the rural population. We put emphasis on the presentation of potential models for the development of cashless payments in the country. Consumers of financial services in rural areas are accustomed to the “traditional” methods of cash withdrawals. It is less popular to take cash from an ATM. The proportion of population using cards is lower than in urban areas. The quantity and value structure of payments in various outlets confirms the existence of the conservative attitude of devotion to cash equated with transaction security. Depending on the domination of regulation or institutional activity, distinguishing “regulatory model” and “institutional model” was deemed appropriate.
