(...) Purpose: The aim of the paper is to present and assess professional development opportunities for older employees in SME. Methodology: In the process of desk research, the author has discerned a number of characteristics of training activities conducted by SMEs. The management of older employees’ professional development is discussed on the basis of selected research findings, i.a. CATI and CAPI surveys conducted in the framework of the “Comprehensive program of activation of people aged 50+” project carried out by the Department of Human Resource Management at Kozminski University in 2010–2012. Findings: The first part of the paper discusses the specificity of training measures undertaken in SMEs. According to a large body research results available, these include: informality, reactivity, short-term perspective, focus on solving current problems, “learning by doing”, focus on the development of specific skills and organizational knowledge, lack of professional organization of trainings. The core part of the paper focuses on the management of professional development of older employees in SMEs. The majority of surveyed firms have declared providing their older and younger employees with the same access to training. However, it does not always mean training is organised, or that employees aged 50+ participate in it. Moreover, the survey has proven the existence of significant differences in assessments and opinions among entrepreneurs and employees. Originality/value: This paper discusses professional development of older SME employees, which is a relatively new problem; it is based on an extensive body of research. Managing professional development of older workers is one of the most important challenges faced by SMEs in the twenty first century and it shall require extensive and thorough research in the future.
Working in health settings as a clown requires the ability to differentiate between the own persona and the clown persona, and to stay in the role despite a variety of challenging situations. This passage requires a cognitive shift that can be interfered, or facilitated, by several variables. This study aims at operationalizing the components involved in the shift, and relating them to psychological characteristics and other relevant aspects of the training necessary to become a clinic clown. A preliminary 34-item version of the Clown Shift Questionnaire (CSQ) was developed and administered to a sample of 130 Italian clinic clowns. Relevant information such as sociodemographics characteristics, various aspects related to the training received such as length, issues taught, internship carried out, psychological knowledge, and competences in clowning were collected. Four dimensions in the shifting process were identified: Reflective awareness, positive beliefs, interference and anxiety. These dimensions represent a profile of individual differences that may be used to predict the success of the clown intervention. Reflective awareness positively correlates with the aspects related to the training and the years of clown activity, while positive beliefs is a dimension not related to training. Anxiety is higher among females and younger people, and correlates negatively with training aspects and years of activity. Interferences are more frequent among those who received higher psychological knowledge and leads to less satisfaction. Further implications for using the concepts of CSQ in research and in the work of clowns in health settings are discussed.
Training is a usual formula for organisations through which employees are introduced to learning, but the challenge lies in identifying the appropriate training needs of employees. Little sociological research has examined the work of circus aerialists. Drawing from interviews with 31 circus aerialists in Canada, we explore what aerialists say about their bodies. Circus aerialism is an intense form of physical work, and aerialists endure intense pain during training and performance. Engaging with sociologies of the body and injury, we examine how body capital is generated, maintained, and lost in the career of the aerialist, as well as how injury accelerates this process. Injury and “aging out” of the circus are prominent themes in what aerialists say about their bodies. Arguing that circus aerialism is an undervalued form of work in which risk accumulates in aerialist bodies, we explore how aerialist bodies provide tacit cues about how to avoid injury and when to consider retirement. In the conclusion, we explain how this work contributes to sociologies of the body and circus.
This study aims to provide insights on how and why a specialised training programme could help graduates with low performance to compete fairly in the job market. This study used an action research design, where a total of 12 graduates with low academic achievement were trained under a specialised training programme consisting of two phases within the period of ten months. Despite having low academic achievements in terms of Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), the employability opportunities of those graduates were high as they were equipped with the highly sought after GST knowledge and certification and various important softskills such as time management, communication, analytical skills and leadership. This study demonstrated that engaging graduates in a specially designed program that aimed to enhance their technical knowledge and softskills coupled with some work experience is indeed a value added strategy to enhance graduates employability. This is particularly applicable to those who are low achievers as it provides them with some kind of competitive advantages. The findings suggest that despite having low CGPA, their employability opportunities, particularly in the accounting and commercial industries, were relatively high. This study provides some guidance to policymakers and educators on how universities and industries may collaborate to mitigate unemployment issues among the accounting graduates.

Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate Algerian universities' success in becoming entrepreneurial, focusing on their effectiveness in encouraging students to establish startups as an initial step toward this transformation. Design/Method/Approach: The study employed a quantitative approach, distributing a questionnaire to 1034 students from various faculties and academic levels at Bouira University. The data were analyzed using SPSS.27. Findings: Results indicate moderate entrepreneurial readiness in students' intentions and the university's motivation, leading to moderate potential for success in launching startups considering Decree 1275. Additionally, entrepreneurial readiness significantly enhances this potential, with the university's motivation having a greater impact on success than students' intention, although the latter is more crucial for fostering entrepreneurial readiness. Theoretical Implications: This study contributes to the literature on the relationship between the university’s role in stimulating and participating in the launch of startups. It considers this the first step towards transitioning to an entrepreneurial university, particularly as this concept is still new in the Algerian context. Practical Implications: The university must evaluate the students' situation and its own, considering each university's varying contexts and local actors, to determine the viability of executing Decree 1275. Originality/Value: Understanding the university’s conditions, along with exploring students’ entrepreneurial intentions, will help identify shortcomings that may limit the success of startup creation through the university, especially since Algeria is still new to adapting to startups. Research Limitations/Future Research: The limitations include those related to the sample size, which focused on some faculties of Bouira University students, due to time constraints, and reluctance to participate. Future research should include all faculties, extend over years, and consider samples from all Algerian universities.
In 1984, lecturers at Zakład Teorii Pracy Operacyjnej Departamentu Szkolenia I Doskonalenia Zawodowego [the Department of Operational Work Theory of the Department of Training and Professional Development] of Ministerstwo Spraw Wewnętrznych [the Ministry of Internal Affairs] of the Polish People's Republic published four studies concerning the training, education, work organization and control of secret collaborators, the so-called TW. According to these publications, dedicated to Security Service officers, education was “the conscious, purposeful and systematic activity of an operational employee, which shapes (instills) and consolidates certain positive attitudes and personal characteristics of secret collaborators necessary – in a given political and operational situation – for effective partnership with the Security Service.” In the presented text the assumptions of this concept are analysed.
