The paper offers an insight into Polish migrants’ perceptions of the English education system and how these may impact on their future migration decisions. The study is based on interviews with Polish parents living in England. First, the author discusses the English education system and explains how disparate it is from the Polish one. Next, Polish migrants’ perceptions of the English education system are discussed. The Polish system is described as promoting higher academic standards, more discipline and a stronger work ethic. In the final section, the author argues that differences between the two systems complicate the issue of prospective return, with many parents fearing their children would not be able to (re‑) enter the Polish education system. Therefore, to Polish parents living in England schooling is a significant factor in making decisions regarding settlement in the UK.

Wprowadzenie: We współczesnych realiach edukacyjnych, społecznych, zawodowych znajomość tzw. ogólnej angielszczyzny jest niewystarczająca do skutecznej komunikacji. Lektorzy języka angielskiego muszą zatem nabyć kompetencje pozwalające na kształcenie językowe w takim kierunku, wśród tych kompetencji jest m.in. nauczanie języków specjalistycznych. Cel badań: Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przeanalizowanie stopnia przygotowania nauczycieli języków obcych do nauczania języka angielskiego specjalistycznego w instytucjach edukacyjnych na poziomie akademickim. Metoda badań: W badaniu wykorzystano metodę analizy dokumentów. Wyniki: Absolwenci filologii nie są wystarczająco przygotowani do nauczania języka angielskiego specjalistycznego, podczas gdy absolwenci lingwistyki stosowanej są w nieco wyższym stopniu przygotowani do podejmowania takich zadań. Główny problem w nauczaniu języka angielskiego specjalistycznego dotyczy braku odpowiednich materiałów dydaktycznych. W rezultacie nauczyciele języka angielskiego muszą opracowywać własne materiały, wdrażać kreatywne metody nauczania albo korzystać z materiałów luźno powiązanych z daną dyscypliną. Wnioski: Przedstawiono praktyczne rozwiązania problemu zarysowanego w artykule, takie jak: włączenie modułu „specjalistycznej metodyki języka obcego” w program ścieżki nauczycielskiej, organizowanie kursów z konkretnych dziedzin dla nauczycieli języka obcego, zbadanie skali problemu, wzajemna wymiana doświadczeń i materiałów pomiędzy nauczycielami, udoskonalenie  dotychczas stworzonych podręczników i materiałów z uwzględnieniem podejścia komunikacyjnego, stworzenie podręczników specjalistycznych.

Introduction: Contemporarily it is not enough to be able to use English solely for general purposes. Thus, foreign language teachers have to obtain a great deal of competences, among which some researchers point to the skills and knowledge from the specialist field. Research aim: The objective of the article consists in analysing if foreign language teachers are sufficiently prepared to teach English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to students of higher education institutions. Evidence-based Facts: The graduates of philology are fully unprepared to teach ESP, while graduates of applied linguistics are partially prepared to undertake such tasks. The main problem with teaching ESP lies, however, in the lack of appropriate didactic materials. Thus, foreign language teachers are left with no other choice than to create their own materials, apply creative teaching methods (e.g. presentations prepared by the students), or to search for the materials loosely connected with a given discipline. Summary: The practical solutions to the problem depicted in the article are suggested, and they are as follows: incorporation of “specialist foreign language methodology” into academic curricula, organisation of courses from a specific field for foreign language teachers, researching the scale of the problem, mutual exchange of experience and materials between the teachers, improvement of the hitherto created coursebooks and materials with account taken of the communicative approach towards language learning, creation of specialist coursebooks.

The article discusses the role of media education in the Polish system of general education, focusing on primary media literacy aimed at developing critical and conscious media consumptions skills among teenagers. The author analyses the current legal and institutional framework of media education in Poland, its development over the years and the challenges it faces. Media education, both in its primary dimension (for children and youth) and secondary dimension (for adults), aims to prepare recipients for critical analyses of media content. The article presents the historical context of the development of media education in Poland, as well as the various stages of its evolution in response to political, cultural and technological changes. Despite numerous calls and attempts to introduce media education as a separate subject, in practice, fragmented approaches to its implementation dominate. The article also emphasises the need to prepare teachers for teaching in this area and to integrate media competences with other subjects. The challenge remains not only to shape media skills but also to protect children from the dangers associated with new media. The author points to the necessity of further developing of media education, including needs related to the changing media landscape.

The aim of the paper is to analyse the content of the core curriculum for high school and secondary technical school using an interpretative framework including two concepts of pedagogization prevalent in Western scientific discourse. As a part of the first concept, the school is deemed responsible for solving social problems. The idea of the other concept is expressed in the proposal put forward for the school concerning preparation of the students for functioning in a learning society. The text is based on literature in the field of social sciences as well as on research carried out using the method of autotelic individual case study and the content analysis technique. The paper consists of three parts supplemented with the introduction and conclusion. The first part discusses the concepts of pedagogization, the next one presents the research methodology and the third is devoted to the analysis of results. The conducted analyses indicate that the pedagogization-related contexts are present in the core curriculum, but they are taken into account to a varied extent.

The aim of this study is to present the main features of the reform process in the Hungarian education system after 2010 and comparing it to the Polish education reform started in 2015. The analyzed education systems had common characteristics but since the fall of Communism they have developed differently. Nevertheless, we can observe several significant similarities in comparing the two recent reforms, the most prominent among them are the ways in which the reforms were prepared and implemented. In both cases, a dominant group with sufficient political powers decided to form the national education system in order to correspond to their worldview and political needs.

Matura is an important high-stakes examination present in the Polish education system since the late 18th century. It is taken on completion of high school and is compulsory for those who want to apply for higher education. As a result of an examination reform, in 2005 the exam took on a new form. Since then it has been a professional, external, standardised assessment used for the analysis of school and student performance, and – most importantly – in lieu of university entrance exams. The article looks at the evolution of the foreign language component of the Matura exam over the last six decades: from an internal test prepared by local authorities and by schools, assessed arbitrarily by the test-takers’ teachers, to a professional examination prepared by expert institutions in compliance with quality standards and assessed by trained markers according to elaborate grading criteria. The paper follows the changes occurring in the assessment starting from 1960 up to 2023, when another examination reform brought about new modifications in the foreign language exam.
