The author analyses a treatise Donatus Latino – bohemicus published by J. Rhenius in 17454. He approaches to this analysis from two points of view: 1. as a lingual text from the époque before Bernolák ś codification. 2. As a grammatical text that can lead to the new observation about the state and development of grammatical thinking in Slovakia.
The paper takes a close look at artistic, ideological and existential vicissitudes of the Chamber Opera, constituted in May 1986 and closed down in June 1999. It summarizes one chapter in the history of the Slovak opera theatre, which in addition to some positive moments was marked by the absence of clarification of competencies and by unfulfilled, often mutually contradictory artistic ambitions of individual personalities who influenced dramaturgy and productions during twenty-three years of its existence.
The main goal of this article is a long-term cross-sectional and cohort analysis of nuptiality of single men and women in Slovakia. We try to analyse the quantum and tempo and also identify the main development trends from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. Using a specialized analysis of the process of postponement and recuperation, we also try to estimate the possible development scenarios of cohort marriage rates of men and women born from the mid-1970s to the second half of the 1990s. No less important is the question of how timing has changed at the regional level. From a historical point of view, Slovakia belonged to countries characterized by an early start of marriage careers and a high intensity of marriage. The model of early and almost universal marriage was even more consolidated due to the specific conditions of the previous political regime. However, in the new social, political, cultural and economic conditions after 1989, it did not find application and was very dynamically abandoned. This was associated with a significant drop in the intensity of first marriages, as well as an increase in the mean age at first marriage. Our results show that without a significant recovery, we will witness further decline. This will be reflected in the increasing shares of men and women who will not have any experience with marriage. The analysis of regional differences in the timing of first marriages confirmed the persistence of approximately equally large differences. However, it did not confirm the spatial image valid from the beginning of the 20th century.
The history of Slovakia and the Slovaks has been perceived in Polish historiography for many years as a component of larger wholes: the history of Hungary or the history of Czechoslovakia. For this reason, Polish historians usually paid little attention to the phenomenon of the national development of the Slovaks in the 19th century. This situation began to change only from the 1990s, when numerous studies finally appeared seeking to see the history of Slovakia and the Slovaks as a separate historical issue from the histories of the Hungarians and especially the Czechs. This text is aimed at presenting the achievements of Polish scholars over the last three decades with regard to the history of Slovakia and the Slovaks in the 19th century. The article describes the most important Polish synthetic studies, collective studies, and finally monographic works on the history of Slovakia and Slovak culture. Attention was also paid to the most important scientific centres in Poland, which initiate research in the field of Slovak culture and history. Despite the growing interest in Poland’s southern neighbour in recent years, significant shortcomings in Polish historiography are still visible. The article also attempts to draw attention to the desirable perspectives for further research in Poland.
The paper deals with alternatives and limitations of language updates of literary, in particular, poetic texts. It responds certain – in the Slovak context not at all unusual – approach to treating language material of literary texts, which leads to radical changes to the author´s language. The positive and negative aspects of this well-established approach have not yet been sufficiently reflected on. In this paper Slovak editorial practice is on the one hand confronted with the theoretical postulates of the national textological tradition (Jozef Felix, Karol Rosenbaum, Mikuláš Bakoš, Jozef Ambruš, Michal Gáfrik and others), on the other hand, it attempts at drawing inspirations from the Czech provenance (František Bačkovský, Otakar Hostinský, Michael Špirit), which at the end of the day aim at reduction of editorial changes and efforts to keep an author´s text as authentic as possible. This indicates an alternative manifesto attitude reducing radical changes made to literary texts, which would make it possible to achieve almost true sound qualities of literary texts.
The author describes the dialect of the municipality of Kaluza which is situated in the Uh dialectal area. The origin of the municipality's toponym is explained and the linguistic traits of the local dialect are characterized. These traits integrate the dialect into the Slovak linguistic area. Attention is also drawn to some of the developmental residues of the dialectal area as they are preserved in the Uh dialect as well as in the Sub-Vihorlat group of the Sotak dialects. The appendix contains a transcription of two folk narratives in the described dialect.
The Constitutional Court is an independent judicial authority vested with the mandate to protect the constitution. It should be composed of thirteen judges. However, at the moment, the Constitutional Court consists of only ten judges, nine of which have already exceeded ten years of their twelve year term. Despite the fact, that parliament has already nominated eight candidates. The president has appointed only one of them. The president reasoned his respective decision with the existence of the constitutional guarantee of the right not to appoint a judge". The existence of such constitutional guarantee has been contested by both the candidates as well as by the third senate of the Constitutional Court. The essence of the claim is anchored in an interpretation of the president's power to appoint the judges and it could be expressed by the question of whether the president is unconditionally obliged to appoint half of the candidates nominated by parliament and if not, what are the limits of his discretion. In the light of this question we need to focus on the purport and assignment of this power and to distinguish its notarial, controlling (limited or extended) and correcting role.
The study deals with the liberation of the city of Trnava by Red Army and the mission of Voluntary Fire and Rescue Force in Trnava during this process. The Voluntary Fire and Rescue Force in Trnava was one of the leading fire-fighting units in Slovakia. Its purpose was to protect the life, health and property of the citizens of Trnava and its surrounding from the fire thread and other natural disasters. This voluntary organization, based on the community principle, whose members voluntarily entered the Communities on the bases of the personal conviction and enthusiasm for the objectives set, played an important role during the Second World War. The variety of its activities was represented among other things rescue operations in the harsh times of the military operations and social changes at the end of the Second World War. At this time were maintaining the fire-fighting communities as the compact units, which united people according to the principles of humanity and decency without any kind of religious, political and social distinctions and barriers.
After the gaining of independence in 1993 we notice a close connection of the Catholic Church and the interests of its managing authorities with the representatives of the state power, what entitles us to claim, that with the establishment of the independent Slovak Republic began the process of its clericalisation. By a close and also frequently co-ordinated cooperation of the religiously oriented political subjects with the representatives of the Catholic Church try the ultimately mentioned to spread their influence on all the areas of the public administration and thus indirectly (in many cases also by an open political engagement) to participate in the political decision making and in the determination of the character of the development of the particular areas of the public life. The consequence is, on the one hand, the „politisation“ of the religion and the church activities, on the other hand it leads to the „religionisation“ of the political and public life and to the strengthening of the privileged position of the Catholic Church in the structures of the public power in Slovakia as well.
The research of medieval sacral buildings has been confronted with the question, why there are remains of high-quality mural paintings, consecration crosses, altars and tabernacles in the sacristies of some churches, or why some sacristies are characterised by unusual construction forms. These cases don´t seem to correspond to our current perception of sacristies. Yet, they indicate that medieval sacristies were not service premises but also could have other purposes, which were almost forgotten and only gradually became a subject of systematic research. The paper is the first to summarise basic information on medieval sacristies in the territory of Slovakia.
Strategic planning went to pass theory and practice with inconsistent development, but it found a strong place in the theory, in the practice and business environment. It became a natural part of business management. However, there are permanently emerging questions considering its development. The most important issues in contemporary time are a rate of formalization of strategic plan content, standardization procedures of strategic planning, effectiveness of strategic planning and methods of strategic plan formation. Submitted article tries to give a basic knowledge about a state of strategic planning practice in companies on territory of Slovakia.
The paper examines use of electronic auctions (e-auctions) as an allocation mechanism in public procurement in Slovak public sector. It is based on data from 32 procurement bodies and 725 procurements in the public sector in the period 2008 – 2010. Our findings are that e-auctions bring average savings of 10 – 12% though their implementation is not free. We recommend that future research quantify costs associated with introduction of e-auctions. The paper also demonstrates that the key variables influencing level of savings can be influenced by the procuring body: number of participants and form of auction (open vs closed).
Pointers of the mortality belong to the category of the essential indicators, monitor in all countries practically. These pointers are placed in almost each report, analysis or in forecast of various orientations in concern of the regional government’s activities, public health authorities, in cooperation with state authorities. State health policy understands health as a basic human right. It tries to aim all social interests on health in terms of key development factors. Requirement of mutual solidarity, accessibility and equality of every citizen, therefore becomes the starting area.
The article deals with the state of research of the Hallstatt period in the Slovak territory of the Ipeľ river basin. Despite numerous terrain activities which started as early as the 19th century and basically continue until now, our knowledge of the Hallstatt period in the Ipeľ region can be characterized as insufficient and our information on individual sites as scarce. However, we must emphasize the fact that none of the settlements or burial grounds used mostly in stages HC or HD has not been investigated in detail so far. The source base and the extent of its processing suggest certain differences in the cultural development as well as discontinuity of the settlement (between stages HC and HD). While there are connections with the inner Carpathian development (the Eastern Hallstatt Culture in the south-western part of Slovakia and in Transdanubia, surviving Urnfield Cultures in the south of central Slovakia) in the material from HC, finds of the Vekerzug Culture from HD suggest connections with the east and southeast. It will be possible to create a more complex picture of the Hallstatt period in this specific territory mainly on the basis of projects including extensive and interdisciplinary investigations.
75 years ago, on 29 August 1944, the Slovak National Council and its military headquarters got out of illegality and declared the Slovak National Uprising – an armed fight against the German Fascist occupying forces and domestic traitors for freedom, democracy and renewal of the Czechoslovak Republic based on the new principles of equality and therefore equal position of the Slovak and Czech nation. The study contains an analysis and evaluation of the decisive documents and events, which had immediate effect on the constitutional aspects of the Slovak National Uprising as well as meaning in terms of political power, military and moral meaning. In addition to the above, the study points out to the origin of the Slovak national statehood, which started forming in the SNU already, continuing within the renewed Czechoslovak Republic, which was supposed to be gradually rebuilt into a federal state following the liberation by the Soviet Army. The study particularly highlights the military and international meaning of the SNU, which consisted in the fact that the Slovak nation, through its armed fight in the Uprising, was tying the Wehrmacht military forces, which the German Fascist were then missing on other European battlefields. Through its Uprising, Slovakia joined the global anti-Fascist coalition of countries as well as the states winning over the Fascist Germany in the World War 2.
Theatre plays by Ivan Vyrypayev, Russia’s foremost and most influential contemporary play-wright, are frequently staged not only in Russia, but also abroad. Several plays have even been written on demand of European theatres. Vyrypayev is a very special and in many ways antipodal author. On the one hand, he bases himself upon the Russian cultural tradition, while engaging in a critically tuned dialogue with it. He introduces new staging techniques and new themes to theatre production, which respond in a very sensitive way to the current state of European civilisation and to the situation of man in the world affected by the crisis of values. Slovak theatre became first aware of his work in the early 21st century. Since 2004, up until now, his plays Sny [Dreams], Iyul [July], Pyanye [The Drunks], Ilyuzii [Illusions], Letniye osy kusayut nas dazhe v noyabre [Summer Wasps Bite Us Even in November], Nevynosimo dolgiye obyatiya [Un-bearably Long Embraces] have been staged in Slovakia. Initially, it was the Slovak independent theatre expressing its interest in Vyrypayev’s texts, but very quickly, mainstream theatres followed suit. They have crossed generational barriers, and in the staging of his plays, the actors of young and oldest generations deliver remarkable performances. In a country in the heart of Europe, the poetics of the author who creates on the borderline between the East and the West, has resonated markedly well with the audiences. The theme of the relationship between Slovak theatre and Ivan Vyrypayev’s dramatic work remains open, whereby the presented study records and reflects on the current situation.
The study analyses the period gendarmerie reports about interventions against demonstrations in Slovakia in the first half of the 1930’s. The research focuses on the strategies of the gendarmerie as well as the “order violators”, as well as the cooperation of the riot police and public administration. The text also assesses the rate of compliance of the gendarmerie practice with the theoretical regulations and deals with the evaluation of the interventions by the gendarmerie governing units.
The presented article deals with the issue of cooperation among museum and gallery institutions and pre-primary education. Its content is structured into a theoretical and a research part that are closely connected. In the theoretical part, there is an analysis of the curriculum of pre-primary education and an analysis of the possibility of cooperation among the pre-primary schools and the museum institutions with regard to the (educational) needs and interests of the child visitor. This connection is then specified in the chapter devoted to the phenomenon of the children’s museum, set especially in the European context. In the theoretical part, we also checked the offer of Slovak museums and galleries intended for pre-school children (performances, workshops, interactive exhibitions). The research part of the article, based on interviews with teachers and directors of nursery schools, examines not only the possibilities of cooperation between the pre-primary school and museums and galleries, but also the specific needs and requirements of pre-primary practice towards these institutions in order to fulfil their educational potential to the fullest possible extent.
The breach of contract and its consequences present the topic that is regulated in a quite blind way in conditions of the Slovak legal milieu. The above mentioned fact is not true in the so called 'European private law initiatives' that are many times denoted as model regulations for the particular national legal regulations. Due to the re-codification efforts in Slovakia, it is necessary to analyze the possibilities of the national legislature in detail. The basic presumption is the account with the problematic terminological aspects, such as a breach of contract versus non-performance and consequences versus remedies. In this way, only the above mentioned account enables finding of the relevant solutions of the problematic aspects of the national regulation.
Submitted article brings evidence from administrative data on registered unemployed in Slovakia. This data is explored to evaluate a training programme which is a part of the portfolio of active labour market measures provided by Slovak governmental bodies. To evaluate the programme, we look at individuals’ chances of getting a job, during the period of 15 months after undertaking the programme. Performance on this indicator is compared between participants and a control group, which is selected ex post using the propensity scores matching approach. The results reveal evidence on negative average treatment effects on the treated, when examined for Slovakia and Bratislava district, where over the half of the trainings is provided. Since the results are contradictory when compared across regions, negative effect of the training measure on employability of participants can be assigned to mistakes in its implementation.
