In a companion article to this one, published in the previous issue of this journal, I discussed the renaissance of philosophical realism, focusing particularly on the different versions of common-sense realism. In this article, I will instead discuss scientific realism and another, intermediate version of realism (which is pluralistic both in ontology and epistemology) that, in my view, incorporates the best elements of common sense realism and scientific realism while avoiding their shortcomings.

The article analyses the theoretical issues of industrial relations area. The relations between the representatives of government and interest groups function relates to pluralism order (rivalry order) or corporatism order (cooperative order). These interest groups cooperate or compete, amongst bilateral, tripartite or multilateral relations and the interests of this groups are confronted, consulted in a bargaining of industrial interests (called collective bargaining also). So the area of industrial relations is a key idea for a stability of the political system.

The author of the article examines the theological interpretation of the phenomenon of secularization and to this end embarks on differentiating between various notions which bear resemblance to “secularization”. Secularization denotes the progressive autonomy of various spheres of human life in relation to the realm of religion, or religion-related norms and institutions. As opposed to secularization being a spontaneous process, laicization is usually understood as a targeted and intentional process of de-Christianizing social relations through structured activities intended to eradicate all forms of the presence of the Church and Christians from public life. De-Christiani-zation, in turn, is an atrophy of Christianity within the structures of the Church itself, especially in Western Europe. The compiled material serves to attempt to answer the following question: In what way does theology evaluate secularization? The author replies to this question by drawing on the assessments of the different protestant and catholic theologians and the teaching of the Catholic Church in the documents of the Second Vatican Council. As opposed to socialization meant to be an exclusion from the worldly life, the Second Vatican Council has juxtaposed secularization with the process of sanctification, which restores God to His due place and acknowledges Him to be the ultimate goal of all things, without questioning the legitimacy of earthly reality.

The paper discusses issues of cultural diversity, pluralism and multiculturalism. The reasons for the popularity of these terms in scientific discourse, politics and social and educational practices are analogous to those which underlay Renaissance ideas of regionalism, locality and “little homelands”. The article is an attempt to depict Płock as a multicultural town from ethnological and historical perspective. A question whether Płock is a multicultural town today and in what sense has also been formulated.

W tekście poruszone zostają zagadnienia zróżnicowania kulturowego, pluralizmu i wielokulturowości.

Przedstawione teorie wyrastają z odmiennego sposobu rozumienia osoby. Teoria Gogacza ma charakter substancjalistyczny, nawiązuje do koncepcji osoby Arystotelesa, Boecjusza i św. Tomasza z Akwinu. Koncepcja Judyckiego jest ujęciem relacjonistycznym, zmodyfikowanym elementami filozofii substancjalistycznej. Odwołuje się do relacjonistycznych teorii Platona, św. Augustyna i Kartezjusza oraz substancjalistycznych – Arystotelesa i św. Tomasza z Akwinu. Tomistyczne i fenomenologiczne ujęcia indywidualności wprowadzają do filozoficznej nauki o człowieku niesprowadzalne do siebie, lecz istotne treści.

Christianity has left an undeniable mark on the “soul of Europe”. Nevertheless, it was not the only inspiration that brought up Europe. The common memory of Europe also consists of movements that denied any religion. Besides, Christianity was divided into its own different confessions. Each one of them introduced its own specific way of understanding of the place of religion in the public life. These differences have endured to our days and it is why not all of Christians insist with an equal strength on the need to include the “Christian heritage” reference in the principal document of the EU. A new quality is being introduced to the question of religion in Europe by the growing presence of Muslim environment. At the same time the EU is searching its own “soul”, an identity, a fundamental idea. After years of indifference the political institutions of the EU invite more willingly the Churches to have an open dialog with them. The Churches from their side possess more and more institutionalized representations in the EU. It seems that the state-church relations have changed the logic from a convention of theocracy into a convention of negotiation. The dialogue as a method became even a new form of non-institutional presence of religion in the political life. In this new situation the memory of the “Christian heritage” should rather result from dialogue than from any constitutional declaration. The only fear that concerns all of Christians is about the condition of European democracy which chronically suffers from lack of interference with the Christian values.

Artykuł sumarycznie przedstawia Szkołę Lwowsko-Warszawską, jej historię, rozwój i poglądy filozoficzne jej przedstawicieli. Wprawdzie to logicy przysporzyli Szkole Lwowsko-Warszawskiej najwięcej sławy, dokonania filozofów lwowsko-warszawskich dotyczą jednak wszystkich działów filozofii, a także psychologii, socjologii i pedagogiki.

A recent but widespread view holds that ethnic or cultural groups have their own distinctive epistemologies, that epistemologies are also gendered, and that these have been largely ignored by the dominant social group. A corollary of this view states that educational research is pursued within a framework that represents particular assumptions about knowledge and knowledge production that reflect the interests and historical traditions of this dominant group. The call for epistemological diversity becomes problematic when it conflates epistemological pluralism and epistemological relativism. More often than not, in such arguments for different, diverse, alternative, decolonized or demasculinized epistemologies some relevant philosophical issues remain unresolved, if not unaddressed altogether. What exactly do these claims about epistemological diversity mean? Do these ways of establishing knowledge stand up to critical interrogation? Moreover, how do they relate to traditional epistemological distinctions, e.g. between knowledge and belief and between descriptive and normative inquiry, and to epistemologically essential components like warrant/justification and truth? This paper examines some of the mistakes and misconceptions involved in appeals to diverse epistemologies. The concern is not just whether or not a word (‘epistemology’) is being misused, but also (and importantly) whether or not the issues dealt with in epistemology (a complex field that has evolved over a long period of time) are being given short shrift, if not ignored altogether.

Odpowiedź umożliwia zestawienie uzyskanych danych z liberalno-przedstawicielskim modelem sfery publicznej we współczesnych demokracjach (Ferree, Gamson, Gerhards i Rucht 2002).

Pluralistic access to media is widely recognized as one of the foundations of democracy. Drawing upon the data on the presence of politicians in the most influential television and radio political programmes as well as the data on viewership and listenership (from November 2015 to December 2017), the article examines the influence the parties have upon media public sphere in contemporary Poland. The article aims at the assessment of whether parties are over-or under-represented in the Polish media public sphere. The evaluation is achieved by setting the empirical data against the liberal-representative model of democratic public sphere described by Ferree, Gamson, Gerhards and Rucht (2002). upon media public sphere in contemporary Poland.

The paper addresses the problem of the axiological implications of beliefs in the context of pluralistic societies. For this purpose, the question of beliefs is placed within a dynamic concept of individual or communitarian identity, so-called narrative identity. This concept is based on the identity of a character correlated his action represented by a plot. On the social level, the coexistence of the strong identifications rooted in beliefs requires the acceptance of an appropriate model. This study is an attempt to answer the question whether a purely formal character of the universalization rule and the argumentative procedures is sufficient in this regard. In this perspective there is a risk of an annihilation of the axiological background which is decisive as far as the human involvement in a responsible construction of the social life is concerned. To protect the investigations from an excessive abstraction, they are transferred in the field of a phenomenological research on the motivation of human will. This inquiry is completed by a confrontation with the formal principle of universalization elaborated by Kant. As a result, the two opposite perspectives seem to be complementary. The two final examples of a wise deliberation and some possible coexistence of strong beliefs in the area of historical policy provide the reader with a larger model of such a coexistence.

Presently, Poland appears to be a vital stronghold of Catholicism in the international arena. It appears to be a homogeneous society, that remains to be hermetically sealed and not available for people from other countries with different cultural and religious background (e.g. fear of Muslim immigrants from the Middle East). However, it does not change the fact that the processes taking place in the deepest structures of the Polish society, not only has a strong secularisation tendency, but also indicates the fact that pluralism is not a new or marginal phenomenon but rather increasing annually. From this perspective, this paper will highlight not only a better and more effective operationalisation of the practical theology assumptions with regards to the socio-cultural and religious pluralism, but also it indicates the new ways of implementing interreligious education, within the formal religious education in Poland. The paper presents a conceptual sketch of the changes in the religious education in Poland, in that religious education should meet the children and young people’s needs. Furthermore, religious education should be deeply anchored in their everyday life and shape the ‘pluralist-emphathetic’ young Christians and citizens who will support the religious dialogue and the functioning of the state, Europe and the world ‘without stakes’.
PL

Against Beata Polanowksa-Sygulska (BP-S), I insist on the incompatibility between the pluralism of comprehensive world-views and belief in the monist, universalist tenets of the principal world religions, noting that God the Father and God the Son were both monists. I argue that my position is entailed by Isaiah Berlin’s rejection of the unique truth of any one comprehensive outlook, and that both Berlin and BP-S confuse toleration with acceptance. I reject the charges that my position is monistic, and that I give insufficient attention to conflict within individual values, which can in any case be treated as conflict between values.

Najpełniejszy strukturalny wyraz idea ta znalazła w ustanowieniu i rozwoju samorządu terytorialnego zgodnie z zasadą subsydiarności i decentralizacji władzy.

During the system transformations after 1989 the Poles voted for the axiological rules of liberal democracy which was to create favourable conditions for social development and to sanction the basic human rights of each citizen. This made the sovereignty a reality. The idea has found its complete structural expression in the establishment and development of the local governments based on the principle of subsidiarity and power decentralisation. Simultaneously it was the demonstration of the enactment of the idea of pluralism and the common good. The legal solutions found their place in The Constitution of the Republic of Poland approved in 1997 and in the acts of law. They are in line with the assumptions included in the European Charter of Local Self-Government adopted on October 15, 1985 in Strasburg and ratified by Poland on April 26, 1993.
