At the beginning author presents situations of Catholic press in Poland after 1945. “Tygodnik Warszawski” published between 1945–1948 and was an important organ of Katolickie Towarzystwo Wydawnicze “Rodzina Polska”. The weekly was in group of Catholic social periodicals for educated people and opposing to new communism ideology in Poland after 1945. That is why “Tygodnik Warszawski” was closed and its editorial staff was under arrested in 1948. In the main part of article Kristanova gives general characteristic of the weekly, its programme and writes about people who were in editorial staff. There were Zygmunt Kaczyński, Jerzy Braun, Zygmunt Choromański, Edward Grzechnik, Zygmunt Wądołowski, Marian Grzegorczyk and Józef Kwasiborski. “Tygodnik Warszawski” published religious, social and cultural problems.
The article is dedicated to one of the categories of the censors’ practices in the Peoples Republic of Poland in the 40s and 50s literature of the 20th century: censored of the border-line-subject. These problem was one of the most controlled and purished in Poland of political reason by the Main Office of Control of Press, Publication and Shows (GUKPPiW), especially – the east border – line problem. Of the examples of literature texts (Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna, Jan Józef Szczepański) and the science – texts, the author described complicated political and cultural situation in socialist countries in the 40s and 50s of the XX century.
This text concerns the reflection on the need to distinguish the function of determining the limits of artistic creativity and expression, and the patronage and organization of cul-tural life financed from public funds. He discusses Polish regulations concerning the influence of public authorities as organizers of cultural life on artistic creation in the field of performing arts and indicates the deficits and the need for clearer indication and ap-plication of substantive criteria in decisions about financing and managing artistic life, regarding limits of artistic expression.

Tekst ten dotyczy refleksji nad potrzebą rozróżnienia funkcji ustalenia granic dopusz-czalności twórczości i wypowiedzi artystycznej oraz mecenatu i organizacji życia kultu-ralnego finansowanego ze środków publicznych. Omawia wybrane regulacje dotyczące wpływu władz publicznych działających jak organizatorzy życia kulturalnego na twór-czość artystyczną w zakresie sztuk performatywnej i wskazuje jej deficyty oraz potrze-bę stosowania i przejrzystego wyznaczania kryteriów merytorycznych oraz dotyczących granic wolności artystycznej w finansowaniu i organizacji życia artystycznego.
„Nie-znajomy wróg jakiś miesza ludzkie rzeczy…”. On the 1984 celebrations of the 400th anniversary of Jan Kochanowski’s death Conferences, differing in nature and concept, of national and international scope organized in the jubilee year 1984 greatly contributed to the existing knowledge on the poet. The year brought about a long-awaited boom in conferences after the relative stagnation of 1981–1983. In light of such an affluence, the issue of editing Kochanowski’s works reflects rather poorly. In terms of publishing of source materials, the year 1984, as compared to other years of the great jubilee, was satisfactory. The main reason for that is an important publication by Maria Garbaczowa and Wacław Urban Źródła urzędowe do najbliższej rodziny Jana Kochanowskiego (Kielce, 1984). Yet, no monograph was published. A significant sign of the times of Kochanowski’s jubilee was the low circulation of books. It was in no-way proportionate to the needs. The “publishing difficulties”, which are more or less cautiously referred to in editorials, are further reflected by the release dates of post-conference materials concluding the 1984 sessions. Key words: Jan Kochanowski; funeral; anniversary; censorship; memory and literature;
Josef Škvorecký completed the first version of the novel Konec nylonového věku [End of the Nylon Age] in 1950. In view of the historical circumstances at that time, publication of the book did not enter into consideration, but in 1957 Československý spisovatel publishers included the manuscript in their publication plan. After the censors intervened, however, the book again failed to come out and did not get to readers until 1967. This study and edition of the work primarily compares the book form of the novel with the oldest typewritten version, which is nowadays housed at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in Toronto. To some extent the author also considers the 1957 version, from which, however, only a few textually unreliable fragments remain in the censor´s writings. Although when Škvorecký was preparing the book version in 1957 and 1967 he was unable to recall the social and political circumstances at the time, a comparison of both versions is particularly telling with regard to the author´s development. The experience that he acquired through working as an author, translator and editor was reflected in the final version. The plot and motif lines of the text remain more or less the same, while changes are evident primarily at thy stylistic and lexical levels which lead to greater emphasis on and precision in the personal perspective of the narrative. Changes in the names of the chief protagonists are primarily noticeable in view of the development which they then undergo through the author´s subsequent novels.
The subject of this paper is the publishing history of Appassionata, a novel of Jozef Morton. About novel – before publishing in 1976 by Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy – for a few years fought disputes. An author didn’t agree to the corrections proposed by the proofreaders and tried to publish his book to the expected shape a long time. He even appealed to the then Minister of Culture and Art.
The article analyses the relationship between the concepts: “censorship”, “taboo” and “shame” on the material taken from the reading of censorship reports from the years 1948–1958. It can be assumed that: 1. censorship is an external control established by governmental or religious institutions; 2. taboo is a prohibition imposed by external bodies (mostly religious), but externalised by the subject; 3. shame is an emotion preventing from something considered inappropriate — the level of internalisation seems very deep here, the subject may not even be aware of the imposition of this condition by external institutions. Both quite subtle differences between the concepts (especially between “taboo” and “shame”) and common places — realisations during which the “launch” of censorship, taboo, and shame is simultaneously activated — appear interestingly. An example might be here taken from the moral censorship, where imposed by culture, imbued and accepted sense of what indecent is, has an influence on the legal regulations and the state control practice.
The paper deals with various types of political influence on the translation and translators. The author shows different types of official (public) censorship and unofficial one (self-censorship, punblishing policies). She discusses the problem on the basis of a range of examples (Polish and Russian mainly), and in the context of different historical epochs. She attempts to show the interrelations between the political principles and translators' decisions, and to demonstrate in what way politics influences the choice of profession.

W Wadowicach cenzura funkcjonowała w strukturach powiatowych, początkowo w ramach administracji powiatowej, a później w ramach Prezydium Powiatowej Rady Narodowej, aż do kasacji powiatu w 1975 r.

Preventive censorship was officially introduced in Poland by a decree on July 5, 1946. The central authority overseeing this was the Główny Urząd Kontroli Prasy, Publikacji i Widowisk (the Main Office for Control of the Press, Publications, and Performances) based in Warsaw. The regional and county offices were subordinate to this authority. In Wadowice, censorship operated within the county structures, initially under the county administration and later under the Prezydium Powiatowej Rady Narodowej (Urzędzie Powiatowym) (the Presidium of the County National Council – County Office) until the abolition of the county in 1975. The county censor was a trusted member of the Communist Party, typically the head or another official of the Wydziału Spraw Wewnętrznych (the Internal Affairs Department). Their responsibilities included supervising all printing facilities and granting permissions for the publication of various materials, stage performances, and other public appearances in the Wadowice county. After the dissolution of the counties, the censorship office for Wadowice was relocated to Bielsko-Biała. Censorship in Poland was ultimately abolished by the law of April 11, 1990.
In a notorious case that occurred in the mid–1820s in Lithuania, Benedykt Puciłowski had his licence to appear in court as a legal representative revoke after he had called an ukase "barbarous". Puciłowski's rather offhand remark led to the Russian authorities deciding to censor attorners' writings. The official correspondence preserved in the vilnius collections sheds light on the way these regulations were drafet.

The study shows some of the methods of institutional and editorial preventive censorship during the period of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL) against selected works by Melchior Wańkowicz, published for the first time in the interwar period or in exile. A comparative analysis of the original texts of the publications shows that in the years 1958–1989, there were not only political interferences of the communist control apparatus, but also intentional actions of editorial teams in publishing houses responsible for successive editions of the books of the famous writer. The article gives the most representative examples. Full, uncensored and unre-edited editions of these books did not appear on the Polish book market until the first decade of the 21st century.

This article deals with the subject of intra-institutional censorship; that is, with cases restricting the freedom of artistic expression through the decisions of managing bodies in cultural institutions. The aim of this study is to draw attention to the problem of determining the actual scope of freedom of artistic creation through intra-institutional practice. It presents examples of such limitations as well as the basic legal and practical problems connected with them.

The article concerns the Nałęczów tourist guidebooks published at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Those guidebooks constitute a substantial part of the literature connected with the Nałęczów spa resort, especially because it included the first publication about the former estates of the Małachowski. Apart from presenting the content of the guidebooks, the article compares the analysed texts with similar publications published in Europe at the time. Moreover, the article shows the linguistic tricks employed by the partition-era writers involved in patriotic activity in order to mislead Russian censorship. Because of that, the guidebooks from the discussed period could play an important role in tourism, at the same time building the position of Nałęczów among spa resorts.

The article deals with the hitherto poorly researched issue of foreign film censorship in the first decade of People’s Poland. In the introduction, the author draws attention to its specificity in relation to the censorship of Polish films. He emphasises the need for a complementary analysis of information from the Film Rental Office and the Main Office for the Control of Press, Publications, and Public Performances. The conflict between these institutions – as evident from files in the Archive of Modern Records – focused on the committee which qualified foreign films. Then, based on files from regional censorship offices in Poznań and Rzeszów, the author demonstrates the scale of the phenomenon, focusing on the “verification action” of 1953 and censorship activities connected with the political situation in the USSR. The conclusion underlines the role of censorship in monitoring the audience’s reactions and addresses the problem of illegal screenings.

The author studies changes in Polish legislation regarding the availability of films to minors in the interwar period. He analyses the consecutive legal regulations and the Law on Films and Their Screening, their origins, and the changes that they brought about. He describes the media discourse that took place around these changes, highlighting the main voices in the dispute, i.e., the Catholic Church, film journalists, teachers, and the young filmgoers themselves, presenting their motivations and arguments. He also outlines the impact of the ongoing discussion on the state’s actions related to young audiences’ access to cinema. He juxtaposes the functioning of the Polish film market with the perceived lack of youth films on screens and the apparent reluctance of producers to invest in this type of pictures, seeking to establish why there were virtually no productions for young people screened in pre-war Poland and what attempts were made to fill this gap in the distribution market.
Analizie porównawczej poddane zostało funkcjonowanie cenzury w następujących krajach: we Francji w XVIII stuleciu, w Indiach pod panowaniem brytyjskim w XIX stuleciu i w Niemczech Wschodnich w drugiej połowie XX w.

The latest book by R. Darnton is devoted to censorship. The intention of the author was to show how, in selected countries with authoritarian political systems and at various times, the control of the printed word was executed. Comparative analysis was used to compare the functioning of censorship in the following countries: Bourbon France in the 18th century, British India in the 19th century and the German Democratic Republic in the second half of the 20th century. Each of these cases is different, but we can find there are many similarities.
