The author analyzes derivatives from the old Slavic root *seb-/*sob- and presents two different lines of the semantic derivation: (a) 'something that is distinct, peculiar' and (b) 'something that is / should be appropriated by the subject'. The central position in the first, older, set of derivatives belongs to the substantive osoba 'person'.
The article presents the influence of the word of animals, which is included in the structure of a word, on the creation of a linguistic image of the world of German and Polish cultural society. The basis for the analysis is constituted by German and Polish verbs derived from the names of animals, which correspond with various aspects of animal existence and their meaning is transferred into certain spheres of human life. The units for the research were collected from both German and Polish dictionaries on the basis of the etymological criteria, indicating their relation to names of animals. The aim of the analysis is to identify the characteristic traits of animals which have an influence on the creation of a linguistic image of the world in German and Polish cultural society.
The author understands word-formation as a system of formal means for lexicalization, i.e. for creation of new lexemes and enriching the inventories of the lexical semantic categories. She suggests that in a grammar written after the formula "meaning > form" the thematic block 'word-formation' should be correlated with the semantic classification of predicates and conceived as an analysis of the lexical semantic categories with word-formational exponents.

Autorka traktuje słowotwórstwo jako system formalnych środków służących leksykalizacji, to znaczy, tworzenia nowych leksemów i wzbogacania inwentarzy leksykalnych kategorii semantycznych. Sugeruje, że w gramatyce pisanej według formuły „treść > forma” blok tematyczny ‘słowotwórstwo’ powinien być skorelowany z semantyczną klasyfikacją predykatów oraz określony w celu analizy leksykalnych kategorii semantycznych z wykładnikami słowotwórczymi.
The paper presents the results of the semantic and formal derivation of the Common Slavic root *by- (as in the Polish verb być) in the Polish language based on its two different semantic components: 1. ‘to exist, to be somewhere’ and 2. ‘to have some attribute’; ‘to be somebody’. The analyses lead to the conclusion that *by- (in the derivatives from być) has extremely high frequency both in the vocabulary and in the texts, and as such constitutes an important element of the Polish lexical and syntactic system.

The article presents the organisation of a scientific text in terms of the structuralsemantic types of sentences (sentence models) used in it, based on the system of sentence models developed for this type of text. This system consists of four models:syntactic patterns with prototypical meaning assigned to them, each of which includes base sentences and transformed sentences. The analysis is preceded by a description of the transformations leading to changes in the model qualification of the sentence, underlying which are primarily the processes of semantic and syntactic derivations. After counting the base and transformed sentences – representatives of separate models occurring in the texts – the organisation of the scientific text appears as a hierarchical structure, organised around the sentences of the relational model. The next mostfrequent models in terms of frequency are the activity model, the existence model, and the characterisation model. The analysis carried out contributes to a better understanding of the syntactic layer of the text as a determinant of scientific style, thusfilling the gap in knowledge of this element of stylistic characteristics of scientific texts in the humanities.
A description of manners of the identification of streets in manuscript documents, which the 17th and 18th centuries municipal year books were, is the subject of the article. Three types of phrases were analysed: the phrases with a sentence determiner, the phrases with a determiner in the form of the prepositional phrase and the phrases with a determiner in the form of adjective. The essential aim of the research is to establish possible semantic structures which were the semantic sources in the process of deriving the nominal groups that have become the street names. The results of the research are as follow: 1. streets were identified almost exclusively (apart from two cases) by deriving the semantic locative relation; 2. most of the locative relations were derived from the proper names taken from beyond the city area as in the case of the town of Gniezno; 3. in few nominal groups the locative relations were derived from the proper names that were in use in the city area as in the case of the town of Pobiedziska.
The author argues that prepositions are an integral part of nominal phrases, and their graphic treatment as autonomous words is purely a lexicographic convention. They have maintained their primary meaning which is localization of material objects and events in space and time, and they subsequently evolved to also express localization in the social world and in the mental world. In a grammatical description of a language they should be discussed together with the semantic and formal structure of nominal phrases.
The author analyzes the semantic evolution of Polish adjectives obcy and obecny, deriving from the Common Slavic *o b ь t' ь. They are both shifters, which means that their reference is context dependent. She demonstrates that their lines of semantic evolution in Polish are unique in the Slavic linguistic world.
Occam’s razor approach is used to disclose the true nature of head-to-head transduction of linguistic meaning. An evaluation of an infelicity showed it to be a name rather than a phenomenon (Occam). It is a metonymic description of actual exchange of linguistic forms taking place during communication. Occam-style reliance on the sensorium alone is sufficient to repudiate the implication that linguistic meaning is a thing. Alternatively, biocognitive theory (Maturana, Kravchenko et al.) points to interpretation of correlations of signals and bodily responses to them as the key to the mechanism of communication. As such correlations are memorized, an individual system of a language arises. It provides for compe tent use of linguistic forms, coupled with a varying range of other bodily signals, to orient the partner to autopoiesis, i.e. his|her sense generation on the basis of commensurate knowledge and linguistic expertise. On such view, the need to adapt to environment, both current and expected, is seen as the stimulus as well as raison d etre of communication. By feedback, the organism s living in language (languaging) is a major factor of its survival in the long run. As far as communicative mechanism is concerned, the speaker organizes a relationship between him/herself as sender and his/her niche to make sure that suitable signals – oral and written language forms, gestures, intonation, body language, etc. are released. Such objects do not become signals for a living system until the latter is prone to respond to them in order to continue to develop. Thus, the recipient interprets and understands the interaction between him/herself and his/her niche, which includes them. Since exchange of information arises as autopoiesis occurring in either partner, any idea of information as being a thing which enters or leaves the body to effect understanding should be considered void (or redundant in Occam’s terminology).
This paper discusses the notion of quantity and related notions from the perspective of their lexicalisation in the area of the so-called (functional, auxiliary) grammatical expressions. Such units, founded on the notion of quantity, create a microsystem composed of the following semantic and functional classes: interrogative pronouns, relators, prepositions, metapredicative operators (of gradation, limitation, approximation), conjunctions, particles, metatextual commentaries, and modifi er of declarativity. The semantic relationships between these units are similar to the ones noticeable between expressions from the relevant level of language; apart from that, they form pairs based on such relationships with units from outside the examined lexical and conceptual field. The paper also discusses the variant groups among the analysed expressions and units that are formally similar yet functionally different.
The subject of analysis in this paper is protoslavic verbal root *met‑which formal and semantic development can be traced from a very old period. The research is based on anthropocentric-spatial language theory which helps to analyze how the meaning embedded in some verbal roots representing basic human positions and movements can transfer and rise through evolution of the conceptualization (of the material and mental world). The author analyzes the derivativesof the protoslavic verbal root *met‑with embedded semantic components (move in all directions, throw…) and how the formal verbal and nominal derivatives carry this semantic information through language evolution.

The paper is devoted to the analysis of Polish and Russian lexicon related to cycling. It indicates in both languages the most productive ways of word formation processes of jargon and professionalisms associated with various disciplines of cycling. They include univerbation, suffixation and semantic derivation.

Wskazano w nim najbardziej produktywne w obu językach sposoby tworzenia żargonizmów i profesjonalizmów związanych z różnymi dyscyplinami kolarstwa. Można do nich zaliczyć uniwerbizację, sufiksację oraz derywację semantyczną.
We came to the conclusion that narrowing of meaning and metonymy are two main types of semantic derivation of all thematic fields of religious vocabulary (52% and 42%, respectively). Metaphor (6%) as a form of semantic derivation and an empirical classifier of the objects of observation is counterproductive in the religious sphere, since for the religious vocabulary empiricalness is not the main source of spiritual knowledge. Active narrowing of well-known and specialized meanings is the result of linguistic conservatism, the emergence of new functions of objects and changes in the knowledge about them. The disappearance of many of the primary meanings was induced by sustainable consolidation of religious narrowings, and frequent replacement of considerable part of them with synonymic equivalents made their functioning to be just a temporal phenomenon. Metonymy in the religious vocabulary as an effective means to achieve economy of speakers’ efforts is well-developed by local, temporal, causal, attributive and synecdochic types. Metaphors created directly by individuals in their religious activities and those from the Bible that underwent terminologization were created in different ways, namely according to the similarity of features (such as function, external feature, relation of subordination, unreal [but desirable] feature, associative characteristics of emotive evaluative nature).

The article focuses on the strategies of semantic derivation of verbs of smell emission – a semantic class of words that denote a situation of smell emission and its perception. The study reveals the features of verbs of smell emission and characterizes their semantic shifts in the Polish and Ukrainian languages. We posit that a linguistic item’s semantic paradigm development aligns with situation concept extensions, which are supposed to be determined by the changes participants undergo within source-to-target-situation shifts. The semantic shifts construed by Polish and Ukrainian verbs of smell emission suggest the regular direction of concept extensions – from an internal domain (a situation of smell emission and its perception) via an adjacent one (smell identification) towards an external (smell interpretation) domain.
The main aim of the article is to establish the status of expression dla odmiany in Polish; attention focuses both on the conceptual level of language analyzed in the syntactic-semantic perspective and also on the metatextual level described in functional terms. The expressions like dla zdrowia, dla zabawy and also dla przykładu, dla przypomnienia serve as a background for this analysis. The obtained results demonstrate that the uses of dla odmiany represent: 1) syntactical construction, which realizes two patterns: a) zrobić coś [dla _ {np. odmiany (od czegoś)}], b) [(zrobić coś1)] dla _ {np. odmiany} (zrobić coś2) and 2) metatextual language unit dla odmiany.

W artykule przedstawiono relacyjny model zdaniowy w systemie innych modeli, zakreślono pole modelu w oparciu o różnorodną semantykę tworzących go czasowników relacyjnych, semantyczne role i taksonomiczne klasy argumentów. Opisano procesy derywacji semantycznej, w których wyniku pole modelu relacyjnego poszerza się kosztem predykatów pierwotnie czynnościowych. Nowa semantyka wielokrotnie skutkuje kształtowaniem się nowych paradygmatów gramatycznych. Istnienie czasowników z tzw. wahającą się semantyką daje możliwość nadawcy tekstu naukowego ujmować czynności intelektualne zarówno agentywnie, jak i impersonalnie.
XX
In the article the author describes the relational sentence model against a background of other sentence models, presents the semantic field of the model on the basis of different semantic groups of verbs, semantic roles and taxonomic classes of the actants. Processes of semantic derivation were described which result in the expansion of the relational model’s field due to agentive predicates of action. New semantics often results in the development of new grammatical paradigms. Due to predicates with unstable semantics, authors of academic texts can choose between agentivity or impersonality while describing the intellectual activities.
Jack to jedno z najbardziej rozpowszechnionych imion w krajach anglojęzycznych i dlatego stało podstawą do tworzenia wielu pochodnych eponimów.

The English name Jack is one of the most common names in English-speaking countries, which has become a derivate for a large number of derived eponyms. The lack of a comprehensive study of this word family determines the relevance of our research. The article is made within the framework of comparative-historical linguistics, lexical semantics, and onomastics. The article aims to explore the structure of the derivative-semantic word family with a stem anthroponym eng. Jack. As a result, the structural types of secondary word family constituents and the main directions of semantic evolution of the creative lexeme and its common nouns derivatives, including phraseological units, were identified. All derived eponyms of the name Jack were divided into the following micro-families: representatives of living nature (males, plants, animals), inanimate objects (mechanisms – any things that have replaced human labor or with which something can be done) and an intermediate link of lexemes denoting the image of a man.
The article is devoted to the analysis of zoonyms motivated by the white colour of the animals. The material resources are cow names in dialects of Ukrainian and Polish languages. Based on the analysis, the author shows the common and the differences in the native speakers of two related languages perception of white colour shades.
