The notion of biopower implies managing populations by regulating and controlling life-related processes. This power medicalizes society, and, in the age of genetics, a unique role is played by genetic research. This has led to the discovery of new diseases such as LCHAD enzyme deficiency, the occurrence of which is relatively more frequent in the Kashubian population. In this case study, I present the process of constructing this rare genetic disease into an ethnic disease. A significant role in this was played by doctors and journalists who, by means of cultural capital, symbolic violence and the power wielded by news media, spread the term the “Kashubian gene,” thereby suggesting that the disease is common in this ethnic-regional group. Despite the adverse effects, the process also had positive consequences: it contributed to the introduction of screening tests for newborns aimed at diagnosing the disease, thereby saving human lives.

This article penetrates the idealistic, Marxist concept of the 'new  Soviet man', linking it with the notion of eugenics. Departing from a reconstruction of the history and specificity of the eugenic movement in Russia since the late 19th century until the installation of Joseph Stalin as the only ruler of the Soviet Union, Lysenkoism paradigm of Soviet natural sciences is being evoked as a theoretical frame for Soviet-specific eugenic programme. Through referring to a number of chosen – both theoretical (classic Marxist works) and practical (chosen aspects of Soviet science and internal politics) – issues and cases, the concept of the 'new Soviet man' is being confronted with an original reading of eugenics, understood in neo-Lamarckian terms of direct shaping human beings through environmental conditions (comprehending the GULag system of labour camps, pseudo-medical experiments and other) and intergenerational transfer (through inheritance) of acquired traits.

Contemporary Hollywood film narrates the fear of monstrous science; attending to the modulations of medicine, capital and the body. The filmic body is employed to illustrate the power of the new biotechnologies to create and sustain life and the new sets of social relations which are a consequence of the marriage of capital and medicine. In the Hollywood film, persons who do not fit the ideal healthy persona have a moral duty to pursue repair and transformation. Constructed as inherently lacking, the unhealthy body becomes a repository for social anxieties about control and vulnerability, vis-à-vis the enormous and exponentially expanding science and technology fields. Hierarchies of embodiment are played out on the Big Screen as imperfect bodies are excluded from public life, power and status and urged to strive for “optimization”. Late modern societies present the possibility of new technologies which have the potential to radicalize bodies. However, these potential modulations are ultimately derived from a set of ideologies around the body and the power of the individual to enact an individualized solution. Contemporary narratives circulate around ownership of capital and the price of “repair.” This marriage of science and capital in popular narratives may be indicative of concerns for our future, as the power to make and repair life seems to rest increasingly in the hands of an elite.

This study presents a Foucauldian approach to research in the history of mathematics education, emphasizing the concepts of archaeology and genealogy of knowledge. By focusing on provenance and emergence, it analyzes how discursive objects and educational practices take shape through power and knowledge relations. Drawing on studies of drawing and financial education, it highlights the discontinuities and contingencies that mark the formation of school knowledge. This perspective offers innovative methodological tools for historical writing and contributes to critical reflections on mathematics education, teaching, and teacher training.

The article is devoted to biopolitics and forms of biopower in the post-apocalyptic worlds created in the texts of popular culture. The author’s theses are based on the analysis of 147 novels and short stories, as well as 246 films and series. The study describes the types of threats to the communities of survivors, strategies for dealing with them and their impact on the post-apocalyptic form of socialization. Although the analysis is not limited to the nuclear apocalypse, it pays special attention to radioactivity as a “magic factor” used in popular works. The author answers the question about what these thought experiments tell us about collective consciousness and “subconscious” of the late modern risk societies.

Kropící vůz? Asanace? Hygiena a "politika ulice":

EN
The quality of hygiene became an important aspect of the design and evaluation of public space over the course of the long 19th century - consideration was primarily made when planning and evaluating the primarily urban environment of the width of the streets, natural ventilation and the degree to which they could be lit using natural light, the area of the square, and the methods of cleaning. Hygiene was concerned with the external conditions of human life. It focused not only on the individual, since the health benefit to the individual was only one piece in the jigsaw of the national or state benefit. The public space designed according to modern hygiene criteria is therefore by principle a value-connoted environment and consequently a means of specific pro-national or pro-state “street politics”.

Euthanasia is treated in the article as an ethical and legal-political concept. The symbiosis of medicine and politics reaches its highest pitch in this notion. The following processes led towards intermingling of these two domains in the notion and currently shape discourse on euthanasia: medicalization, bureaucratization of dying that influences the transparency of medical personnel’s decisions as well as patients and their families, biopower rationalization, conflicts between experts, worldviews pluralization and the resulting differentiation in how life, death and suffering are understood. Anomalies (unclear status of new entities called neomortos), the change of death criterion into brain death, the wide margin of uncertainty in judicial decisions – all concomitant to technological progression – compromise the norms endorsed by authorities. When the individual stories of people struggling to be able to undergo euthanasia are inspected (including the ones presented by the media), the discourse unfolding in these stories is not the discourse of homo sacer but of moral subjects. These are the narratives of identity based on dignity and independence. This discourse is rooted in self-reflexivity as defined by Giddens and in the conscious construction of identity projects.

Tu w najwyższym stopniu dochodzi do symbiozy medycyny i polityki.

Sexuality is an important element of political influence. Power, through culture, establishes systems of domination and benefits from it by blocking the body. The concept of sexual policy understood as a set of all actions (legislative, cultural, discursive) of power in the sphere of sexuality, allows for a better understanding of the processes of managing a person and subduing their desires. The work aims to show the broad denotational scope of the concept of sexual policy and its intertwining with elements of other types of politics (cultural, economic). Critical reflection on (bio)power strategies allows for an effective correction of political activities in the sphere of sexuality.

Education is a basic human right, widely recognized as a means of progress and the main way to create awareness and understanding of the concept of sustainable development (SD). Sustainability, as a widely recognized paradigm indicating the need to protect the natural environment and preserve it for future generations, is being introduced into educational curricula in school and academic education. In this study, an innovative method of determining the Ecological Footprint (EF) was used using  in terms of a teaching tool. The study included pedagogy students who were using  a publicly available EF calculator test from www.footprintnetwork.org. The use of the test indicated that it fulfills the functions attributed to didactic measures. Moreover, it is modern and publicly available. The obtained EF values of the studied students differed from the average EF values calculated for Poland, the EU and the World. Knowing one's own EF and comparing it with the average for the group, the country and the world allows one to take appropriate steps to change one's behavior. The introduction of the calculator as an educational tool contributed to the respondents' personal interest in adhering to the principles of sustainable development, which in further time can lead to pro-environmental behavior and thus contribute to stopping climate change. The EF calculator as a teaching tool can be useful in both formal and informal education.

The article examines the concept of biopower as it relates to contemporary reproductive medicine. It puts forth analytical frames for understanding the ways in which the power and hegemony of modern Western medicine (biomedicine) are applied and negotiated in the field of human reproduction, and it proposes possible uses for such frames in the sociological study of Czech reproductive medicine. It deals mainly with biopower and biopolitics as analytical concepts pertaining to the control and administration of the modern population, governmentality, medicalisation, and authoritative knowledge. The article conceives biomedicine as a sign of the normalisation of modern society, identified with the Western concept of health and illness and the idea of technological progress, and subjects it to critical sociological analysis. It focuses on an analysis of reproductive medicine, a key sphere of biopower. In the context of biopower, analysis of the normative nature of reproductive medicine and its consequences in the wider social space is significant. Such consequences affect intimacy and sexuality, the institute of kinship, heteronormative reproduction, gender identities, and more. The authors’ interest in this subject is motivated by the strong connections between reproductive medicine, technology, and the commodification of health and illness. The article also focuses on the methods that Czech sociology has used to date to study this topic. The authors aim to introduce a conceptual approach into Czech sociology of medicine and use it to analytically link the theme of biopower and reproductive medicine.

Human geneticization, discussed in the following text, is usually associated with the bio-medical practices aimed at human improvement, with the use of genetic enhancement, also understood as genetic improvement or genetic correction. Despite the wide range of benefits claimed by scientists (including biotechnologists and geneticists), these practices undoubtedly generate a number of ethical and legal problems. They concern, among other things, the legitimacy of conducting research in the field of biotechnology or genetics, including reprogenetics, its possible direction, projections related to the development of the research, as well as the methods and means used to control the aforementioned research, or even the problem of both the legislative and moral validity of its further practical implementation. This can be seen, for example, in the ongoing discussion on the geneticization of human life, and in the broader context of its progressive biomedicalization. In view of the considerable breadth and complexity of the issue of geneticization, this text focuses primarily on a closer examination of the possibilities that genetic enhancements, supported by the potential which  genetic engineering might bring,  followed by  due consideration of selected bio-ethical dilemmas that may arise from the application of such enhancements.

Background: The process of medicalization as a form of biopower is present in many aspects of human life, including vaccination. Aim of the study: The study aims to determine social attitudes towards medicalization in the context of vaccination, and to assess the relationship between children’s vaccinations and the knowledge and education of their parents. Material and methods: This survey-based study involved 180 subjects – 141 women and 39 men. The median of age was 28 years. 32.2% of the participants (58) had a medical education and 67.8% (122) non-medical education. 52.78% of people included in the study (95) had at least one child and 47.22% (85) were childless. The study was conducted using the authors’ questionnaire fallowed by the test of knowledge. Results: Respondents with a high level of knowledge are afraid of vaccination policy and believe that the fact that the state decides on these issues is a violation of human rights. The majority of them do not vaccinate their children. People with medical education vaccinate their children more often than those with non-medical education. Conclusions: In the context of vaccination, it is clear that the level of the knowledge and the number of vaccinated children are unsatisfactory. Repeated myths about harmfulness of vaccinations and fear of adverse postvaccination reactions are the reasons, why parents refuse to vaccinate their children. The control of biopolitics over vaccinations is a part of medicalization, which is strongly experienced by individuals with a high level of knowledge. Reliable information provided by a physician could increase the number of parents, who decide to vaccinate their children. Cel pracy: Określenie społecznego odczucia medykalizacji w kontekście szczepień ochronnych oraz ocena poziomu wyszczepialności dzieci w odniesieniu do poziomu wiedzy i wykształcenia rodziców. Materiał i metody: Badania przeprowadzono wśród 180 osób – 141 kobiet i 39 mężczyzn, mediana wieku wynosiła 28 lat. Wykształcenie medyczne miało 32,2% (58), niemedyczne – 67,8% (122); 52,78% (95) badanych miało co najmniej jedno dziecko, osoby bezdzietne stanowiły 47,22% (85). Zastosowano sondaż diagnostyczny z wykorzystaniem autorskiego kwestionariusza ankiety wraz z testem wiedzy. Dostarczenie rzetelnych informacji w relacji lekarz – rodzic mogłoby spowodować wzrost pozytywnych decyzji o szczepieniu.

Throughout this article the author interprets the crisis of the rule law in Poland in 2020 caused by the phenomenon described as Covid-19 pandemic as the solidification and consolidation of biopower – the contribution of ideas and practices justified by the findings of natural sciences to the disestablishment of paradigms hitherto recognized as fundamental to the creation and application of law, that is the due process of law or its formal justice. I proceed from the assumption that the creation and application of law must be grounded in phronesis - the Aristotelian prudence, that is the intellectual process of assessment of not only the means but also the goals. Thanks to the discernment of both the goals and the means in the same cognitive act, one gains the opportunity to distinguish individual cases and insight into specific situations. I assume the phronetics of law to justify and at once enable its acquisition of the property referred to as justice in its formal sense - predictability, non-retroactivity, generality of regulation, and so on. If, on the other hand, the law becomes subordinated to paradigms justified with the use of natural sciences, it ceases to fulfil its function. Biopower invades the legal sphere as a discourse of necessity, such a necessity is in itself the very opposite of the fine art of balancing the various competing interests, appreciating the importance of form and ritual, distinguishing the various individual cases. The purpose of this article is to analyse the impact of the crisis referred to as the Covid-19 pandemic on law and in no way to pronounce on the medical aspects of its proliferation or express a moral or political judgement of the actions justified by the need to contain it.

Medicalization of a woman’s body is not a new phenomenon – it is widely described in Polish and foreign literature mainly with reference to maternity and menopause [Domańska 2005, Buczkowski 2005, Szczepaniak 2010, Bielawska-Batorowicz 2005, Arroba 2003, Cindoglu, Sayan-Cengiz 2010, Spina 2010, Whitaker 2000, Bell 1987, Conrad 2007, et al.]. Both issues are very complexand include theoretical deliberations and empirical research over variety of problems2. The paper examines the process of medicalization of a woman’s body with a focus on breasts. This choice is based on observations and analyses of literature concerning the medicalization of women’s bodies. A key finding was that within the frames of the process some aspects of women lives became more, while other conditions stayed relatively less medicalized – which stays in agreement with the Conrad’s concept of the degree of medicalization [Conrad, 2007: 6–7] – and that one of the most medicalized part of a woman’s body became breasts. To analyze this issue three dimensions of the medicalization of women’s breasts are proposed: aesthetic – commercial, reproductive-demographic, medical - productive. The analysis depicts how a part of a female body became a matter of interest for different medical subdisciplines depriving women of autonomy and changing normal life processes into an object of medical interventions and making women subject those interventions. The paper shows also how a female body became an object of biopower and biopolitics, which – through different tools – governs individuals’ bodies as well as whole populations. To analyze the issue a new analytical approach is proposed based on the concepts of the sociology of the body and the concept of biopower by Foucault. The analyze focuses not on the medicalization of the whole body and life of a woman but only on a part of the body – breasts and it does not depicts a certain case of medicalization but multidimensional practices performed toward that part. The analysis will be made in the context of the Polish society but the assumption is that the medicalization is a global process that progresses similarly in all Western societies and some comparisons and references to other countries (mainly to the United States) will be made.

Medykalizacja ciała kobiety nie jest nowym zjawiskiem – jest szeroko opisana w polskiej i zagranicznej literaturze, zwykle w odniesieniu do macierzyństwa i menopauzy [Domańska 2005, Buczkowski 2005, Szczepaniak 2010, Bielawska-Batorowicz 2005, Aeroba 2003, Cindoglu, Sayan-Cengiz 2010, Spina 2010, Whitaker 2000, Bell 1987, Conrad 2007, itd.]. Oba tematy są kompleksowe i obejmują zróżnicowane rozważania teoretyczne i badania empiryczne. Artykuł przedstawia proces medykalizacji ciała kobiety z naciskiem na piersi. Wybór ten wynika z obserwacji i analizy literatury.

The aim of the article is to provide a preliminary identification of the mechanisms of power in Józef Mackiewicz’s war novels. The first part focuses on the tools of discipline and biopower. Particular attention is paid to the methods of gaining knowledge of the individual subject (confession) and the collective subject (Foucauldian security, immune mechanisms). In both cases, the mechanism of acquiring knowledge of the subject is at the same time a method of its production. The second part complements these considerations by providing an analysis of methods of resistance to both types of power. The third part considers the thesis according to which the mechanisms of population production and protection may be combined in Mackiewicz’s novels with the so-called immunological understanding of war.

Randy Malamud, Bob Mullan i Garry Marvin dokonują krytycznej oceny sposobu przedstawiania zwierząt trzymanych w niewoli w ogrodach zoologicznych, a także badają obecność kultury ogrodów zoologicznych w społeczeństwach miejskich. Bierna obserwacja zwierząt w zoo sprowadza je do zwykłych eksponatów służących celom rozrywkowym, zamiast pozwolić nam naprawdę docenić je takimi, jakie są.

Zoos are spaces for human–animal engagement; they are believed to provide people with limited exposure to the wilderness, a glimpse of the innate splendour of the animal kingdom. However, questions arise regarding the degree to which animals are actually visible in these environments. This prompts us to reflect on a crucial query: can a confined urban animal, separated from its natural environment, truly provide an understanding of a species’ natural state while preserving their subjectivity? Randy Malamud, Bob Mullan, and Garry Marvin provide critical evaluations of how captive animals are portrayed in zoos and also examine the presence of zoo culture in urban societies. Observing animals passively in a zoo reduces them to mere exhibits for entertainment purposes, rather than allowing us to truly appreciate them for what they are. This paper uses Foucault’s concept of biopower to interpret Diane Hammond’s novel Hannah’s Dream as a zoo narrative, wherein Hannah is positioned as a recipient of biopower that shapes her sense of self in dual roles: that of a companion animal and a zoo animal. The central inquiry revolves around exploring how Hannah’s identity is constructed by the anthropocentric discourse of dominance and control over animals.

W studium zawarto możliwe społeczno-ekonomiczne konsekwencje rozwoju biotechnologii i inżynierii genetycznej w skali światowej. Zarysowany, bardzo szeroki zbiór zagadnień, należy skonkretyzować, usystematyzować i logicznie ustrukturyzować na podstawie analizy wpływu globalizacji na kondycję jednostki, jej relacji do koncepcji bios; wprowadzenia doktryny sprawiedliwości społecznej na poziomie międzynarodowym, ochrony praw człowieka i obywatelskich w wymiarze globalnym; wprowadzenia nowych, biopolitycznych modeli władzy, rządzenia i relacji międzynarodowych; oraz teorii globalnej ewolucji.

Biopolitics focuses on the impact of globalization on the well-being of the individual and society as a whole. Accordingly, issues of human security and the threats posed by the process of globalization, as well as the transition from a disciplinary regime to a regime of governance at the global level, which, based on democratic values and liberal norms, are raised. That is why the problem of social justice and equality is solved. The issue of human safety within global governance should be emphasized. It is about a sense of security as a basic human need. Moreover, it is about the global security necessary for the survival and reproduction of humanity as a whole. As well as the study of potential socio-political consequences of the development of biotechnology and genetic engineering in the global dimension. This huge set of issues must be concretized, systematized, and logically structured through the analysis of the impact of globalization on the state of the individual, its relationship with the concept of bios; introduction at the international level of the doctrines of social justice, protection of human and civil rights at the global level; study of potential socio-political consequences of the development of biotechnology in the global dimension; introduction of new biopolitical models of power, governance and international relations; analysis of the theory of global evolution.

This article focuses on the Mennonite settlers who inhabited the floodplains of the lower Vistula River from the 16th century and the steppes on the Dnieper River from the late 18th century. Their unique hydrological and agricultural knowledge was so useful that it allowed them both to maintain/ preserve their identity in a foreign environment and to secure their economic prosperity. Autobiographical narratives describing the daily life of the settlers in the Żuławy region (memoirs written by external observers) and in the lands of present-day Ukraine (letters and reports of the settlers' leader) unanimously emphasised the most important features of their practices: pragmatism, purposefulness, and efficiency. These settlers were brought to both the Vistula and the Dnieper delta for their knowledge of agriculture and food processing, their skill in animal husbandry, and experience in preparing land for cultivation, as well as their ability to build mills, reinforced canals, dykes, and drainage facilities. Thus, they were able to manage the economy (not only economics, but, more importantly for me, agriculture and water) and, as the recollections of those who had the opportunity to get to know the Mennonite farms indicate, to suggest their ‘style of reception’ (narrative and ideas). In this paper, I examine how knowledge, skills, and experience enabled the Mennonites to exercise different forms of power? In this context, I understand power as a consistent policy and a coherent, multi-domain project that integrates agricultural, technological, social as well as aesthetic (and economic) domains. Therefore, a useful tool to explore this will be the concepts of biopower according to Michel Foucault and Thomas Lemke. Paul Hamilton's concept of literary politics (Realpoetik) and Alexander Etkind’s “laboratory of modernity” will provide an important background for this interpretation.

Dlatego dobrym narzędziem do jej zbadania będą koncepcje biowładzy według Michela Foucaulta i Thomasa Lemkego. Istotne tło dla takiej interpretacji stworzy koncepcja literackiej polityki (Realpoetik) Paula Hamiltona i „laboratorium nowoczesności” Alexandra Etkinda.

The text provides a deep and critical review of Hardt and Negri’s Commonwealth. In his criticism Harvey focuses primarily on the perspective of class struggle, underestimated by the authors, as well as on the lack of developed analysis of fictitious capital and contemporary finanscialization of the economy. According to the geographer, in the Commonwealth too much emphasis is placed on consideration of Spinozian categories (such as singularity) and the issue of immateriality, which may result in drawing away Hardt and Negri’s attention from the formulation of a concrete proposals of political activities of the multitude.

Tekst stanowi pogłębioną, krytyczną recenzję Rzeczy-pospolitej Michaela Hardta i Antonia Negriego.
