Willingly and notoriously used term “psycho-manipulation” has neither precise nor commonly accepted meaning. There are many alternative ways of its understanding. The paper offers a new definition of psycho-manipulation being a result of an analysis of the most popular and influential meanings of this term appearing in the psychological literature. Our approach bases on the notion of self-deception.

W działalności firm negocjacje zajmują ważną pozycję, od umiejętności prowadzenia rozmów zależy często nawiązanie nowych kontaktów i dalsza współpraca pomiędzy firmami. W praktyce negocjacji wykorzystywane są różne techniki pomagające w osiągnięciu zamierzonego celu, niektóre z nich wzbudzają jednak zastrzeżenia etyczne. W artykule zaprezentowano pojęcia etyki i negocjacji. Przedstawiono zakres działań etyki negocjacji. W kolejnej części podjęto rozważania na temat motywów i konsekwencji stosowania nieetycznych zachowań w negocjacjach.

The problem discussed in the article concerns nonassertive behaviour and its psychological consequences. In the next part of the paper the author presents many definitions of assertive behaviour, showing how the concept is understood by different psychologists. According to some authors, assertiveness is behaviour which is used in defence of individual’s right. Other psychologists emphasize in definition expressing feelings, attitudes, wishes and opinions in direct, decisive and honest way. There are also authors who define assertive behaviour as a right expression of any feelings, different from anxiety or a direct way of expressing thoughts, feelings and wishes in socially approved way. In the last part of the article there is a critical assessment of presented conceptions.

The presented article only touches upon issues related to observing or not observing the rules of linguistic behaviour. As the examples show, it happens that violation of one rule is a simultaneous violation of another. The examples illustrate different communication situations and the use of different types of language. More research on this issue would be useful.

The article contains chosen language means which are responsible for manipulation and persuasion in magazine Fairy. Manipulation is usually presents in expressive, stylistic means, because they affect emotions of readers and create atmosphere of mysteriousness. Persuasion is achieved in those texts by quoting rich argumentation, referring to historical evidences and scientific knowledge. Focusing on reasons of interest in fortune-telling among people of the 21 century the magazine’s author shortly describes the evolution of divination. She presents also language differences in new and old texts related with magic.

The hedonistic culture rejects both shame and the feeling of guilt that is connected to it. In spite of this rebellion against shame, it is an indispensable regulator of collective life and human interactions. A constructive shame protects human autonomy. It determines impassable boundaries between human beings. It allows a person to form an identity and separateness. The attitudes towards shame tend to be ambivalent. Diagnoses and assessments of this phenomenon are ambiguous, often internally contradictory, arbitrary and at the same time cautious, both in study and in everyday life. It is an individual that feels ashamed, but we can talk about a „culture of shame” or „shamelessness”, referring both to bigger and smaller human collectives. Shame and shamelessness have an exceptional place in the media. Truth and a shameless disregard for it is the aim of media manipulation. It is therefore necessary to be guided by courageous thinking and capability of assessing the shamefulness/shamelessness of the media and to stand up against the destructive and depraving principle that „anything goes”.

Artykuł zawiera analizę tematyki negocjacji poczynając od najbardziej konkretnej (finanse) do najbardziej abstrakcyjnej (status i uczucia), a następnie analizuje wieloznaczność terminu „korzyść”, która w negocjacjach ma trzy sensy: moja, twoja albo wspólna. Jednak szacowanie korzyści wymaga procesu porównania z idealnymi oczekiwaniami albo z empirycznie dostępnymi innymi rodzajami dóbr (korzyści). Wszędzie tu można modyfikować wizję sytuacji poprzez manipulacje, a nawet systemowe mistyfikacje obrazem punktu zakotwiczenia, wartości krańcowej.

The article offers an analysis of the topic of negotiations, from the most concreto area (finances) to the most abstract (status and feelings), and then an analysis of the many meanings of the term profit, which in negotiations has three areas: mine, yours, or shared. Yet the estimation of profit requires a comparison with the idealsituation expectations or with other empirically available kinds of goods (profit). In all these, it is possible to modify the vision of a situation through tinkering or even systemic deception via the image of an anchor point, the extreme value. The concept of neuro-linguistic programming in particular includes a rich set of verbal manipulations, which may reflect the hidden intentions of a negotiating party. Even in an individual’s cognitive system, there exist tendencies for tinkering with the image of truth in order to protect the person’s good opinion of themselves. In the other part of the article, the authors discussed seven strategies of manipulation which are used in Polish business practice.

The Internet is the first medium in which controlling the content has become difficult or even impossible. One of its reasons is the fact that the Internet users – who so far were only passive recipients of media messages – have gained the possibility to create and distribute their own messages. Thus, they have become active participants of the participatory culture, in which it is difficult to distinguish between professional and amateur content. The boundaries between private and public domains have become blurred. The distribution of forces shaping public opinion has changed, because the content comes from large media corporations and nonprofessional creators alike. The Internet message is characterized by instantaneous distribution, the ease of editing and modifying its content, and vagueness of authorship. These features make the Internet particularly susceptible to disinformation purposefully aimed at manipulating its users. The fact that every activity undertaken by the Internet users is recorded and analysed is also conducive to manipulation attempts, as the data obtained this way are used to shape their opinions and influence their decisions. The aim of the article is to undertake a discourse on information and disinformation on the Internet in the context of the development of new digital communication tools. The article provides the examples of information manipulation, which could happen only in such an interactive and multimedia medium as the Internet.

Documentary nature of photography convinces the viewer that the image is exactly the same as reality. A photo causes trust and this property of photos is repeatedly used in manipulating public opinion. In the report perception means of the image are analyzed. Special attention is paid to the fact how photojournalism becomes the powerful tool in terms of information war against a backdrop of military conflicts. Especially in today’s conditions, when, according to Oksana Zabuzhko: “Era of »bombed cities« passed — the era of »bombed brains« began…”. History of photodocumentary and history in general can argue that wars and disasters always attracted the attention of the news. A photo neutralized the distance between the viewer and the event. But at the same time, in terms of Russian aggression against Ukraine, it became a popular and effective weapon in the “information” or “psychological war”. The meaning and the true scale of this war are often underestimated. It is perceived like a sort of supplement to “main”, “hot” armed phase of the war. But in reality the meaning is reversed: the information war is total. Moreover, the visual aspect of it is paid the main attention. Photos and their variations are successfully used as a technology of hybrid war. The consequences of this are so powerfully felt by Ukrainian media space. To the most used means we include misrepresentations, information provokes, fakes, manipulations, photo collages, false testimonies of witness, fake experts and witnesses and others. These technologies are analyzed in the report as manipulative tools of modern information and hybrid war.

This article attempts to isolate and characterize the complexity of the contemporary information war and warfare. The analysis of technological evolution in the field of information is based on the impact of the periods of economic development specified by A.D. Chandler. The first period was based on the dominance of the press and the film. This is the time associated with the First World War. The second period consists in the rapid development of radio and is associated with the interwar period and the time of World War II. The last, contemporary period, is related to the dominant role of television and the internet. This is the time of the Cold War and the transformation of the contemporary international security. There are three main groups of actors of the informational confrontation: state and governmental institutions, business branding companies and social organizations. Finally, the article proposes capturing the complexity of researching the information war.

W artykule podjęto próbę wyodrębnienia i scharakteryzowania złożoności problematyki współczesnej konfrontacji informacyjnej. Chandlera.

Autorska propozycja zróżnicowania wymienionych terminów dotyczy następujących aspektów procesu komunikowania: intencji nadawcy, sposobów osiągania celów, oczekiwanych korzyści, rodzajów informacji/argumentacji, charakteru przekonywania, nastawienia nadawcy do odbiorcy.

W kampanii wyborczej do parlamentu w 2007 roku, by zaskarbić sobie sympatię wyborców, politycy głównych ugrupowań – PO i PiS-u – wykorzystywali zarówno jawne, jak i ukryte sposoby autoprezentacji.

Self-promotion, which allows political parties to present themselves as a group of people who are reliable, experienced and ambitious, plays a key role in pre-election propaganda. In the parliamentary election campaign in 2007, politicians of the two leading rival parties — PO and PiS — used both explicit and implicit ways of self-presentation with the aim of winning the sympathy of voters. The explicit means included the first person plural verb forms; the implicit means- a much larger group- encompassed various ingratiation techniques and linguistic means such as metaphors or presuppositions. The main goal of the following article is to demonstrate that the pre-election self-presentation of PO and PiS uses the same (mostly manipulative) mechanisms of verbal influence on voters, although the rhetoric, views, or agendas of both parties vary considerably.

This article examines the relationship between task orientation as a leadership style and managers’ tendency to exhibit manipulative behaviours. The study had a quantitative character and was conducted using an online survey among 101 individuals with experience of working in the role of subordinates. The questionnaire included questions identifying the manager’s orientation (task-oriented or employee-oriented) and the frequency of occurrence of selected manipulative behaviours. The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis. The results indicate that manipulative behaviours are widespread – 68.31% of respondents indicated the occurrence of at least one of them. At the same time, significant differences between the studied groups were found: task-oriented managers demonstrate a clearly higher level of manipulative behaviours than employee-oriented managers. Moreover, as the intensity of task orientation increases, the average number of manipulative techniques used also increases. The obtained results confirm the existence of a relationship between managers’ orientation and the propensity for manipulation and indicate that a strong task orientation may foster more frequent use of covert forms of exerting influence.

The aim of the article is to describe and present the basic characteristics of the phenomenon of market manipulation made by disseminating false information. In the first part of the study, based on a conceptual analysis of the literature on the subject, the idea and functions of information and manipulation on financial markets are shown from the financial and legal point of view. In the second part, on the basis of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority’s statistics, the importance of quality of information for the efficiency of financial markets is analyzed. The contribution to the analysis was conducted on a sample of the most important sources of announcements for investors: financial reports, analyses and recommendations, media reports and rumors. The examples of manipulations which took place between 2006 and 2017 in the capital market in Poland are also presented.

Artykuł ukazuje metody manipulowania jednostką stosowane przez WCzK/GPU podczas przeprowadzania operacji dezinformacyjnej, zwanej w literaturze aferą MOCR- Trust. Ponieważ archiwa rosyjskie do dnia dzisiejszego nie odtajniły materiałów operacyjnych dotyczących powyższego zagadnienia, w artykule poddano analizie wspomnienia Wasylija Witaljewicza Szulgina – jednej z ofiar manipulacji, autora książki Tri stolicy. Dzięki wsparciu analizy historycznej dorobkiem naukowym psychologii społecznej odtworzono modus operandi stosowany przez sowieckie służby specjalne podczas prowadzenia działań operacyjnych wobec wybranych jednostek.

The article depicts manipulation methods used by the Soviet intelligence organization WCzK/GPU during the disinformation operation known as MOCR-Trust affair. Due to the missing data from the Russian archives, the only possible analytical approach was the analysis of memoires of one of the manipulation objects published in 1927 as a book titled Tri stolicy. By application of the social psychology to the historical analysis, the modus operandi used by the Soviets during the operation named above was reconstructed.
