Conclusion. It is advised that health professionals assess the distress levels of high-risk pregnant women and give personalized care during prenatal period.
History reminds us that the care in Byzantium constitutes a unique example for all of human history and civilization. The Byzantine period is specifically of interest for its approach to social welfare and organized care for the sick, the elderly, mothers, and children. Byzantine hospitals were so well organized that they may be compared with contemporary ones. Nursing care was administered mostly by nuns and monks as a form of prayer and as an expression of love and worship of God. On this basis, nursing developed into a calling and a sacred service. During the Byzantine period, knowledge spread across the world, the social position of nursing was elevated, and the spiritual aspect of healing was emphasized.
Introduction and aim. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers continue to work selflessly and intensively despite many occupational hazards. Although various studies have been carried out to evaluate the experiences of nurses who play an important role in the fight against the pandemic and the effects thereof, qualitative studies carried out using the photovoice technique are very limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the experiences of nurses working during the COVID-19 pandemic and show the impact that COVID-19 has had on nurses’ work and daily life using creative photographic data. Material and methods. This qualitative study employed a participatory action research design, and photovoice technique was used. Research data were collected from nurses working in COVID-19 clinics of various hospitals between May and September 2021. Data analysis was performed via a phenomenological interpretation method. Results. Five themes emerged from the data: (1) burnout, (2) anxiety, (3) social isolation, (4) emphasis on professional value, and (5) the value of life. Each theme was presented with representative photographic and written narratives provided by the participants. Conclusion. The findings of this study suggest that nurses experience problems such as burnout, anxiety, and social isolation. All the participants associated these problems with the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on work and daily life. On the other hand, the participants emphasized professional value and the value of life despite all the negativities and risks.
Background and Purpose: The main purpose behind the formation of leadership competency models must be the improvement of leadership. A competency model should serve as one of the tools for selecting the most suitable leaders, appraising their work, assessing training needs and preparing programmes of functional and formal education. The objective of this research is to assess the training needs of leaders in health care. A comparison of leadership competency models between different professional groups should serve as one of the tools with which to assess the training needs of various levels of leaders. Design/Methodology/Approach: A descriptive study using a survey design was conducted on 141 nurse leaders in Slovenia. Respondents indicated to what extent each of 95 different behaviours was characteristic of a person at their leadership level. Results: The most important competence dimensions (groups of behaviours) for leaders in health care are (1) at the first - top leadership level: strategic thinking, openness to change and responsibility; (2) for leaders at the second - middle leadership level: relations with co-workers, animation, resistance to stress; and (3) for leaders at the third leadership level: realisation skills, execution of procedures, communication. Training needs assessments were done for three leadership levels in nursing care. Conclusions: The greatest need for training of nurse leaders can be observed at the third leadership level. Special training programmes should be organised in the competency areas of realisation skills, execution of procedures, communication, education and ethics
Introduction and aim. Palliative care is an approach to improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing problems associated with life-threatening illnesses or old age, to manage their pain, distress, and other symptoms, improving their quality of life, and providing psychological support. This study was designed to identify the care practices planned by nurses for the health issues of palliative surgical patients. Material and methods. This is a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study. The data was collected from digital records of the two state hospitals in the Western Black Sea Region of Turkey between January 2019 and January 2020. The research was completed with a total of 391 data of patients undergoing palliative surgery. Frequency and percentage distributions were used in descriptive statistics. Results. The frequency of symptoms observed in patients were determined as cough and sputum (81.8%), dehydration (73.9%), dyspnea (71.9%), fatigue (49.9%), loss of appetite-weight (49.9%), insomnia (44%), pain (37.6%), nausea (29.2%), and constipation (23.8%). The planned nursing diagnoses for these symptoms were identified as risk for falls, imbalanced nutrition, risk for impaired skin integrity, risk for infection, risk for aspiration, deficient knowledge, risk for impaired respiratory function, constipation, ineffective airway clearance, pain, risk for deficient fluid volume, sleep deprivation, impaired gas exchange respectively. Conclusion. This study highlights the insufficient planning of nursing care for the symptoms of palliative surgical patients receiving palliative care in our country. Therefore, it is recommended that palliative care nurses be supported with in-service training on appropriate care planning topics.
Anaphylactic shock is a life-threatening condition characterized by a severe and rapid course causing disorders in the digestive, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. The paper presents a virtual patient program. It allows to analyze each phase of the shock safely, which is often impossible in the real situation due to the fast and progressive course. Right actions and proper patterns of care by nursing staff will help to reduce the risk of death and increase the quality of care.

One of the most prevalent diseases is atherosclerosis of the lower limb arteries. In Poland, about 40 thousand patients are treated in vascular surgery clinics due to ischaemia of the lower limbs. Treatment is divided into conservative and invasive. The aim of this paper is to present care-related problems occurring in patients affected by atherosclerosis of the lower limbs arteries. The ‘individual case study’ method was employed to research this problem. The research techniques used include an interview, a talk, medical documentation analysis, participant observation as well as an analysis of laboratory and specialist test results. Modern standards presuppose an individualization of patient care, assuming the patient's involvement in therapeutic planning. The proper care of aforementioned patients involves interdisciplinary care, pharmacotherapy, rehabilitation, secondary prevention with reduction of risk factors for atherosclerosis, a proper diet, increased physical activity and psychological support
The article describes in general health – nursing – medical care in our system of health care. Nurses provide nursing care and communicate with multicultural patients.
Background In the assessment of healthcare processes focusing on the quality of care provided, patient satisfaction is an important indicator that healthcare providers may use for future setting of healthcare and preventing adverse events. The study aimed to determine satisfaction with nursing care among hospital inpatients. Material and Methods The sample comprised 14 023 patients staying in medical and surgical wards of 14 acute care hospitals in the Czech Republic in 2019–2020. Data were collected using the Patient Satisfaction Scale, a standardized tool containing 11 items in 3 subscales. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and correlation analysis (Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient). Results Overall, patients reported high satisfaction with nursing care (M = 3.57). Patients were most satisfied with how their technical/rational needs were met (M = 3.57); the least satisfaction was identified in the domain of information needs (M = 3.53). Patients who perceived their health as good (47%) or very good (18%) showed high satisfaction scores (M = 3.77 and M = 3.73, respectively). High scores were also achieved for patients with secondary (M = 3.58) and tertiary (M = 3.59) education, those whose admission was planned (M = 3.59) and those staying in large hospitals (M = 3.60). There were no differences in satisfaction with regard to gender (p = 0.755) and the COVID-19 pandemic (p = 0.190). Conclusions Patients’ satisfaction with care provided is a highly significant parameter of healthcare quality. It is influenced by a number of aspects which, if adequately defined, may aid in improving the quality of care.
Do najważniejszych ostrych powikłań, jakie mogą wystąpić w trakcie zabiegu, należą: hipotonia i hipertonia śróddializacyjna, kurcze mięśni, świąd skóry, odczyny gorączkowe, hipoglikemia. Rzadziej występują zespół pierwszego użycia dializatora, zespół niewyrównania, hiper- i hipokaliemia, zator powietrzny, hemoliza.

Renal replacement therapy may take the form of dialysis and kidney transplantation. Dialysis is performed by means of two methods: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis (HD) is a dynamic procedure during which the patient's blood plasma is exposed for a few hours to a therapeutic solution such as dialysis fluid. The most important acute complications that may occur during the procedure are hypotension and hypertonic muscle cramps, skin pruritus, fever, hypoglycaemia. The less frequently observed complications include the first dialysis use syndrome, decompensation syndrome, hyperand hypocalcaemia, air embolism and hemolysis. A nurse is an important member of the therapeutic dialysis unit. She is in direct control of the normal course of hemodialysis, she observes the patient, reacting immediately whenever complications occur. She plays an important role in the process of educating patients, which results in improved quality of life and improved well-being observed in patients during the interval between dialysis and the reduction in the number of occurring complications.
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic and progressive disease. It leads to multi-organ failure, patient disability and thus a decrease in their quality of life. It usually starts at the age of 30-50, which makes it difficult to perform social roles and professional activity, especially when the disease is advanced. The aim of the study is to present deficits in the functional efficiency of the patient in the course of systemic sclerosis. Case study includes a 68-year-old woman with a recognized form of systemic sclerosis. We can observe self-care deficits, as well as difficulties in movement resulting from pain. The patient avoids contact with her relatives, which is due to her low self-esteem resulting from the feeling of helplessness in the course of the disease. The nurse of the primary care in cooperation with the patient and her family develops a care plan aimed at improving the self-care and care efficiency of the family.

Twardzina układowa (SSc – systemic sclerosis) to choroba przewlekła i postępująca. Pielęgniarka podstawowej opieki zdrowotnej we współpracy z pacjentką oraz jej rodziną opracowuje plan opieki zmierzający do poprawy samoopieki i wydolności opiekuńczej rodziny.
Głównym celem pracy było przedstawienie opisu przypadku migotania komór (VF) u pacjenta z mechanicznym wspomaganiem układu krążenia w odniesieniu do opieki pielęgniarskiej. Dokonano przeglądu dokumentacji medycznej i przeglądu piśmiennictwa dotyczącego VF u pacjentów z LVAD. W niniejszym opisie przypadku przedstawiono dane kliniczne 61-letniego pacjenta, u którego przez kilka dni występowały objawy VF.

Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) effectively manage advanced heart failure as a bridge to heart transplantation or as destination therapy. Ventricular arrhythmias remain common after LVAD implantation, and such treatment allows dangerous arrhythmias to be tolerated hemodynamically. The main aim of this study is to report a ventricular fibrillation (VF) episode in a patient supported by a LVAD in terms of nursing care. A medical document review and review of the literature on VF were carried out. This case report describes the clinical data of a 61-year-old patient who had VF for several days.
Udar niedokrwienny stanowi główną przyczynę powodującą niepełnosprawność, pogarszając znacznie jakość życia chorego, a często prowadzi nawet do śmierci. Do opracowania procesu pielęgnowania posłużono się metodą indywidulanego przypadku i wykorzystano następujące metody badawcze: obserwacja bezpośrednia pacjentki, wywiad, analiza występujących objawów i dokumentacji medycznej, wykorzystanie skali oceny świadomości pacjenta Glasgow, skali samoobsługi Barthel i skali ryzyka odleżyn Norton. Prawidłowo realizowany proces pielęgnacyjny i leczniczy pozwolił uniknąć niebezpiecznych dla zdrowia i życia powikłań związanych z wystąpieniem udaru mózgu, a podjęte interwencje pielęgniarskie zaskutkowały skutecznym rozwiązaniem problemów opiekuńczo-pielęgnacyjnych pacjentki.

Nowadays, the number of cerebral stroke increases dangerously, which is a challenge for modern medicine. Ischemic stroke is the main cause of disability, significantly worsening the patient’s quality of life and often even leading to death. In Europe, more than 20% of patients die within the first three months after the onset of an episode of stroke, while another 20% struggle with severe disability, not allowing them to return to life before the onset. Decrease in the efficiency of the patient after stroke affects all aspects of his life. The condition of a patient after stroke requires help with the basic activities of everyday life, which is a significant burden for the patient and his family. It is necessary to reconcile with the fact of the disease and the resulting restrictions and to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to care for the patient after a stroke. The aim of the study was to identify selected care and nursing problems and deficits of the patient after ischemic stroke and to propose actions for their effective solution. In order to develop the nursing process, an individual case method was used and the following methods were used: patient’s direct observation, history, symptoms and analysis of medical records, Glasgow coma scale, Barthel self-care scale and Norton scale for assessing risk for pressure ulcer. In the analyzed patient, the existing problems were the result of cardiovascular burden resulting from the current ischemic heart disease, hypertension and condition after myocardial infarction, as well as the deficit in the matter of self-care and depressed mood. The patient’s condition was also evaluated for re-occurrence of stroke as a result of longterm hypertension. The case studied was typical for the clinical picture of ischemic stroke. The patient was conscious, although there were slight disturbances of consciousness. Her condition was determined to be medium heavy. There was a growing neurological deficit manifested by increasing problems with speech and disturbance of balance. There were no violent symptoms characteristic of hemorrhagic stroke. The patient underwent conservative treatment in the neurological ward.Properly implemented care and treatment process allowed to avoid complications related to the occurrence of stroke that are dangerous for health and life, and the nursing interventions have resulted in an effective solution to the patient’s care problems.
Objectives. The aim of the work is to present the main nursing problems and to discuss nursing care for a child after myelomeningocele surgery. Material and methods. The research method used in the work is the analysis of an individual case using the nursing process. Techniques and research tools include a standardized nursing interview conducted with the child’s parents, observation of the patient, analysis of medical records. Percentile Grids developed by WHO for children aged 0–3 years were used for anthropometric assessment. The child’s mobility was assessed using a mobility scale (based on the FMS – Functional Mobility Scale) for children aged 3–18. The scale assesses a child’s ability to move within 5 meters. The scoring criteria have been divided according to the way you move. The child can receive points from 1 to 6. Additional criteria are C and N, where C indicates moving in low positions at home, e.g. crawling, while N indicates the child’s inability to move. The level of anxiety intensity in the child’s mother was also examined. For this purpose, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Rating Scale (HADS-M) was used. The questionnaire consists of 16 questions in total. For the answer to a particular question, you can get from 0 to 3 points (4-point Likert scale). The first 14 questions measure the level of anxiety and depression on the basis of two independent subscales, each of which is rated from 0 to 21 points. The last two questions concern the rating of irritability (0 to 6 points). Scores in the range of 0–7 points are considered correct. A score between 8–10 is the limit value, while a score of 11–21 points indicates irregularities. Conclusions. Caring for a disabled child requires a significant commitment from the child’s parents. It is often associated with the need to reorganize the current life in order to take care of the child. Patient K.M. spends most of her time with her mother, who, despite her young age, took care of her daughter.

Cel pracy. Przedstawienie głównych problemów pielęgnacyjnych oraz omówienie opieki pielęgniarskiej nad dzieckiem po zabiegu przepukliny oponowo-rdzeniowej. Materiał i metody. Metodą badawczą zastosowaną w pracy jest analiza indywidualnego przypadku z wykorzystaniem procesu pielęgnowania. Techniki i narzędzia badawcze to standaryzowany wywiad pielęgniarski przeprowadzony z rodzicami dziecka, obserwacja pacjenta, analiza dokumentacji medycznej.
