„Rozczytanie” tychże z kolei pomogło mi odnaleźć drugie dno powieści, a także zadać pytanie o wiek czytelnika Wrońca i o zasadność włączenia go do kanonu lektur szkolnych.
The main aim of the article is to reconstruct and critique E.D. Hirsch’s position in the debate about the necessary conditions and results of any interpretation. The author of this article seeks to demonstrate the difficulties connected with the intentionalist approach to the theory of interpretation which is typical of E.D. Hirsch and which unjustifiably privileges authorial intention. He also attempts to uncover the hidden assumptions of this approach by showing that, generally speaking, the dualist tendencies that are present in Hirsch’s theory cannot be justified. One of the objectives of this article is to propose an alternative approach to interpretation, which has been inspired by Stanley Fish and which emphasizes the integrity and monistic nature of interpretation as well as its constructivist and inevitably evaluative character. The author points to the fact that the arbitrarily established evaluation limits are unjustified as there is an element of evaluation on every level of interpretation and that the difference between understanding and interpretation cannot be validated. Also, one cannot interpret a text without each time referring to the social and cultural context.
The author presents the ways in which “Peiperism”, i.e. a model of thinking about the avant-garde as exemplified by the reception of Tadeusz Peiper’s works, is disintegrating today. Research on avant-garde poetry which privileged a theoretical perspective resulted in the distorted reception of texts, thus building a doctrinal model of the first avant-garde that marginalized or objectified literary works. However, the restoration of the superior role of poetry which was absorbed and dominated by the structural concept of poetic language compels readers to “leave the beaten track” and try to read Peiper’s works in a different way. At the same time, established opinions on the intellectual and nonphysical as well as fully expressible and complex model of the Cracow avantgarde are redefined. A closer look at the texts reveals interpretational differences and shows that avant-garde authors’ utopian projects are not necessarily congruent with their output.
The author describes the underappreciated, artistically innovative illustrations that Piotr Stachiewicz created for a jubilee edition of Bene Nati, which had been issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Eliza Orzeszkowa’s work as a writer in 1891. The author emphasizes the variety of Stachiewicz’s illustrations which portray the novel’s storyline, dramatic and genre scenes, characters and a winter landscape. These differ in format as well as the way in which they are integrated into the text and in which the images’ borders, which perform an interpretive function, are treated. When a border is interrupted and an illustration encroaches on the space that was intended for text, this means overstepping the boundaries of the fictional world and entering the real world. A reference to Andriolli’s illustrations brings to mind the world that was created in Pan Tadeusz [Sir Thaddeus] and constitutes a form of Aesopian language.
The author of this article discusses several books that were written by Artur Grabowski, a Cracow poet, critic and researcher who is an expert in the theory of poetry, theater, drama and contemporary art, by focusing on his latest book Herbert-Hermes. Konteksty nowoczesności w esejach, dramatach i wierszach Zbigniewa Herberta [Herbert-Hermes: The Contexts of Modernity in Zbigniew Herbert’s Essays, Dramas and Poems] (The Jagiellonian University Press, Cracow 2013). This book represents an original attempt at situating Herbert’s essays, selected poems and a drama (Jaskinia filozofów [The Cave of Philosophers]) in the context of interpretive, hermeneutic practice which is treated quite loosely, and it has been highly favorably reviewed. The author of the present article draws attention to the erudition and inventiveness of Artur Grabowski, who has managed to start a new thread of research on Herbert’s work, but she also challenges ideas presented in certain passages of the book.
Henryk Markiewicz’s book Czytanie Irzykowskiego [Readings of Irzykowski] is a collection of studies dedicated to the work of a leading Polish modernist critic who was also an influential theorist, historian of literature and author of the experimental novel titled Pałuba. Although this collection does not constitute a monograph on Karol Irzykowski’s work, the variety of methodological approaches that are presented in the articles reveals Markiewicz’s characteristic interests and shows that contemporary literary studies focus on reading and history rather than theory (P. de Man). These studies were influenced by the ideas of Russian formalists (B. Eichenbaum), semiotics and Marxism; however, Markiewicz does not faithfully adhere to any methodological school. Above all, his studies show that he is interested in literariness, literary works of art, the history of ideas and correct interpretation.
K. Rahnera i J. Ratzingera,Offenbarung und Überlieferung. Geburtstag, Mainz 1968, s. 59–70.
The article reports on the state of research in the German postcolonial studies, comparing it with a discussion on the implementation of a similar project in the Polish literary discourse, and on the basis of the bibliography argues that German researchers boldly confront the traditional instruments of interpretation with those of postcolonial studies. The proof of this state is also presented on the basis of considerations of German researcher, Monica Ehlers, who gives the interpretation of the story of Heinrich von Kleist Betrothal in Santo Domingo. According to her view, the text anticipates the critical point of modernity, demonstrating crisis of the primacy of sight, which constitutes a discursive figure of European domination.
Luchino Visconti’s masterpiece “Death in Venice” (“La morte in Venezia”) has the reputation of being a quintessential work of European art film, the epitome of 1970s auteur cinema, one of the most impressive film poems ever made. Based on famous novel written by Thomas Mann in 1911 (after Gustav Mahler’s death), it is a profound and intriguing artwork concerned at its depth to communicate the most important human meanings like the essence of death or powerfully symbolic depiction of 19th Europe ideas and values in a fascinating filmic imagery. The 1971 film adaptation is not only a lament for a lost nobility and a swan song for human sublime forms of life created by the noble class, but also an epic panorama of the old Europe that evokes the cultural upheaval brought on by the collapse of ‘la belle époque’. In his comparative study Marek Hendrykowski explores central motifs of the literary and film versions of “Death in Venice” and expands on this contention, pinpointing the various sources of the film’s uniquely impressive effect. Hendrykowski’s contextual analysis and interpretation, written in a lively and accessible style, traces the complex motifs that run through “Death in Venice” and discovers step by step the elements (Mahler’s music, the use of authentic locations, high culture vs mass culture conflict, biographical background, etc.) evoked and appealed in Visconti’s film.
There has been some discussion about how far relevance theory can help in analysing the interpretation of literary works. Starting from the assumption that literary works are not entirely sui generis but exploit at least some of the abilities used in other varieties of verbal communication, I show how the same theoretical machinery used in analysing the interpretation of ordinary utterances can shed light on the interpretation of literary texts, and touch briefly on two more general issues: how can fictional works be relevant, and how can illocutionary and perlocutionary effects be disentangled in the case of literary works?
This article refers to critical considerations about limits of interpretation focusing on the category of “use” that is – depending on methodological basics – recognized as an opposition of the interpretation or one of its kinds. Some critics invert that relation arguing that interpretation is nothing but one of possible ways of using literary texts. Author inquires what in fact is “use”, what that means that someone “uses” the text, and if more that one kind of use exists. Taking for granted that all restrictions of interpretation should be minimized or absent while talking about the “use” author forms the opposition “is not allowed” / “is not possible” that sets impassable, although relativised to one cultural context limits of interpretations and applications of the literary texts.
Interpretation of the Bible is today a difficult and demanding undertaking, for it deals with a complex and multidimensional text. First, it has all characteristics of any human literary work. Second, many believers read it as a word of God. The Bibie as the human work has to be explained by means ofliterary and hislorical methods, employed mainly by biblical scholars at the universities. However, the Bible is still proclaimed in the Church as the actual word of God. This creates a serious hermeneutical problem of how to relate the scientific interpretation of the biblical texts to its kerygmatic exposition. In order to solve the problem one has to work out a new hermeneutical model that takes into account all three stages of a hermeneutical arc: understanding, explanation and appropriation.
Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy metodologii czytania literatury polskiego renesansu i baroku. Dzięki przemianom dyskursu humanistycznego (np. poststrukturalizm, feminizm, gender studies, postkolonializm, antropologia literatury) wciąż można i należy ponawiać pytanie o literaturę staropolską, jej miejsce w horyzoncie zagadnień i problemów, jakie formułuje współczesna teoria.

This article is devoted to the methodology of reading Polish Renaissance and Ba- roque literature. In my essay, I am interested mainly in the research strategies that are fully conscious and articulated in the literature since the 1990s, and which are also an attempt to re-evaluate the existing tools for reading old Polish literature. Although there are important works that place more emphasis on the very act of reflection on the methods of interpretation of the sixteenth and seventeenth century literature, it seems that a dialogue with contemporary paradigms of the perception of literary texts is not a fundamental practice in interpretation projects. With the transitions in the humanist discourse (such as post-structuralism, femi- nism, gender studies, post-colonialism, anthropology of literature), we still can and should repeat the question of the Old Polish literature and its place in the horizon of the issues and problems formulated by the contemporary theory.
