The introduction of the euro enabled a reliable institutionalization of economic co-operation between the European Union member states that goes beyond monetary policy. This then enabled a limitation of the political conflict within the economic policy, increasing international reliability of the Union’s mechanism that creates the essence of monetary policy. As a result, we can observe a process of a slow but constant rise of the international role of the euro even in the conditions determined by the global financial crisis. These conditions, however, revealed a significant governing bodies’ sensitivity causing a slow-down in the increase in the reserves held in the euro in comparison to the reserves in the U.S. dollar.
The aim of the study is to assess the impact of changes in the EUR/PLN exchange rate on the real sphere of the Polish economy in 2010–2019. This period was characterized by a relatively stable macroeconomic situation between the two world economic crises. The Polish economy can also be assessed at that time as relatively closely related in terms of trade, money and economic conditions with the euro area, which is confirmed by the literature review. The first part of the article describes the phenomena that determine the functioning of the exchange rate as a mechanism for stabilizing the economic situation in Poland and presents selected research results in this area. The next part of the work is devoted to the description of the methodology of the author’s own research. Then the obtained results and conclusions were presented. The study used the VAR econometric model, which did not show a statistically significant relationship between changes in the EUR/PLN exchange rate and changes in real GDP.

Joining the EU and then the Economic and Monetary Union, the member states, including Poland, committed themselves to accept the euro. Replacing the national currency with the euro is a big challenge for a given economy and it is a process which requires economic and legal convergence. In practice, in the era of global financial and economic crises the question if and when to accept the euro is still valid and requires a comprehensive analysis. The article constitutes an attempt to analyze the basic macroeconomic indicators in the national economies of the countries which in the years 2004–2015 accepted the euro in order to verify the thesis of some measurable benefits resulting from introducing the community currency. The basic result of the monetary integration is accelerating the convergence and limiting the influence of the crisis shocks. However, unsuitable moment of the euro introduction may result in worsening the economic situation of a new member state of the Eurozone.

Przystąpienie do grupy najbardziej rozwiniętych państw Europy w długim okresie prowadzi do zbliżenia poziomu gospodarczego państw członkowskich.

The article analyzes potential benefits and costs of euro adoption in Poland in the light of the theory of optimal currency area (OCA). The main research methods used are literature review and economic analysis. The author focused on long-term effects. The analysis shows that during the introduction of euro it is important to establish a balanced conversion rate in order to prevent overheating of the economy. As interest rates in the euro area are lower than in Poland, and the monetary policy of the European Central Bank is more expansionary than of the National Bank of Poland, there is a risk that euro adoption may result in excessive credit expansion, increased private sector debt, excessive import and consumption. Also, due to the high budgetary and structural deficit levels of the public finance sector in Poland, the possibility of using fiscal policy to reduce negative effects of asymmetric shocks would be limited. A possible inflationary pressure also constitutes a significant risk.
The aim of this article is to evaluate the changes in exports of goods between the euro area countries and non-euro member states between 1995 and 2014 with a particular attention to the potential impact of the single currency on these processes. The analysis was based on the literature review supported by using the export intensity index. The research suggests a possible appearance of small export intensification among the euro area members in the first years of the monetary union functioning (1998-2000). Then export intensity decreased and re-emerged during the financial crisis (2008-2014).When considering export intensity between different groups of countries, important changes seem to have taken place between the euro area countries and the new EU member states joining the European community in 2004. The euro area exports directed to the new EU countries accelerated mainly in the second half of the 1990s and during the financial turbulence after 2008.

The aim of the paper is to analyze the attitudes of Poles towards the euro’s adoption in Poland and to identify factors that determine their opinions on this issue. For the analysis, the logit models of a dichotomous variable were constructed separately for each year, based on data from the Flash Eurobarometer surveys. The study covers the period 2020–2022, which is marked by a significant instability due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the outbreak of the full-scale war in Ukraine. During the analyzed period, not only did support for the euro increase, but also knowledge about this currency improved as well as the benefits awareness of using the euro raised. The study demonstrates that two factors had the strongest impact on the Poles’ reluctance to the euro in this period: (1) respondents’ perception that the introduction of the common currency would lead mainly to negative consequences and (2) respondents’ various concerns, for example, about the possibility of price increase, a loss of Poland’s identity and control over economic policy, or difficulties in adapting to the use of the euro. Other factors determining Poles’ attitudes towards the euro include: age, gender, level of education, size of a residence place, and labor market position.

The aim of the article is to present the characteristics of the long-term interest rate as one of the determinants of convergence as well as to use it in order to assess the convergence of Polish economy in relation to the euro area. As research methods, an analysis of literature and an analysis of statistical data were utilised. The research period starts in May 2004 and ends in December 2013. The long-term interest rate seems to be one of the most important measures of the economies’ convergence. The main reason is that its level is influenced not only by market conditions but also by determinants having their origin in the quality of economic policy (inflation target, authorities’ credibility, the situation in the public finance, etc.). Despite the relatively high value of the long-term interest rate in Poland in the analysed period compared to other European Union member states outside the euro area, one can observe a long-term downward trend in the difference between its level in Poland and the monetary union’s average. This phenomenon may indicate a gradual deepening of the convergence and increasing readiness of Polish economy to adopt the euro.
The article presents the potential advantages and disadvantages of introducing the euro in Poland, on the basis of macro- and microeconomic theories. In particular, the author examines the implications of the move for private consumers. Berbeka presents the results of empirical analyses and surveys of residents in the 12 European Union member states that introduced the euro in 2002. In the final part of her article, the author discusses the findings of polls into the feelings and expectations of Poles with regard to the country’s planned accession to the euro zone. In the EU-12 euro-zone countries, the adoption of the euro has led to varied economic and psychological implications, including an increase of prices and social frustration. Many consumers were initially disoriented and needed time to adapt to the new situation. These psychological costs negatively influenced the public’s perception of the benefits of the euro. In Poland, the euro will probably benefit around 30 percent of the population in the initial period, while the rest will primarily feel the costs of the move, Berbeka says. Negative psychological effects are likely to provoke price hikes. Considering the worries that Polish consumers expressed in the surveys and their skeptical attitude toward the euro, the process of replacing the zloty with the single European currency should be properly organized. It should be accompanied by a public awareness campaign to highlight possible difficulties.
This paper discusses the issue of Poland’s future economic performance in the case of either adopting the euro or remaining outside the eurozone. The author claims that irrevocable fixing of the exchange rate deeply affects the economy. On the one hand, it allows for the microeconomic gains that, if fully exploited, may lead to faster growth and modernization. One the other hand, it brings about multiple risks, including challenges related to the adjustment to external shocks in the absence of monetary policy tools, as well as a risk of “the Southern eurozone countries’ trap”, namely excessive debt caused by easy access to inexpensive capital. Nevertheless, the key factor determining final outcome is the efficiency of functioning of the Polish economy, its economic policy, and institutions.
This article focuses on problematic issues of the Maastricht criteria. The possible effect of attempt to meets the criteria is confronted with its intended purpose. Each criterion is analysed generally by pointing out problematic issues, subsequently, fulfilment by Eurozone members and risks for the Czech Republic, too, are shortly analysed. It is shown that in many cases fulfilling criteria can lead to a different development than was initially intended. The analysis reveals that attempts to meet the criteria can lead to divergence from Eurozone, can cause several economic problems and can bring pain with no gain.
The article deals with the common currency as one of the biggest challenges currently facing the European Union. Arising from the financial crisis 2008–2009 and deepened by Brexit, they ought to be interpreted and analyzed as the most important impulse to further integration, especially within the sphere of fiscal policy on supranational level. The author claims that for those EU member states which do not participate in the monetary union it is the optimal moment for the decision to join and initiate the relevant procedures. Without any decisions so called multi- or two speed Europe is to be considered as a political fact. For Poland such a scenario creates costly and uncertain position which could inhibit its activities in the common Europe.
In this work, author presents potential benefits resulting from Poland’s accession to euro area, which was committed to by concluding the accession treaty to the European Union. The most important benefits include price stability, elimination exchange rate risk, reduction of transaction costs for companies trading with foreign countries. Achieving those benefits will be possible if long-term criteria of nominal convergence are met and real convergence is achieved.

W niniejszej pracy autor prezentuje potencjalne korzyści, wynikające ze wstąpienia Polski do strefy euro, do czego zobowiązała się zawierając traktat akcesyjny do Unii Europejskiej. Do najważniejszych korzyści zaliczyć można stabilność poziomu cen, zwiększenie wolumenu wymiany handlowej, eliminacja ryzyka kursowego, zmniejszenie kosztów transakcyjnych dla podmiotów prowadzących wymianę z zagranicą.
The article discusses the possible introduction of the euro in Poland. The legal and social aspects of responding to the will of the people on this matter have been analyzed. The accession of a Member State to the Economic and Monetary Union is subject to conditions, specifi ed by convergence criteria, to ensure good preparation of that Member State for the adoption of a single European currency and its integration with the eurozone. Poland is subject to a temporary derogation, which means that it is obliged to join the Economic and Monetary Union after meeting these criteria. Despite of the lack of a deadline for the adoption of the euro by Member States that joined the EU in 2004 or later, the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU (Article 119) requires them to introduce common currency in an indefi nite future. In Poland, the issue occasionally raised in the discussion is that citizens should decide in the referendum whether to convert the zloty into euro. Taking into account the predominance of unfavourable attitude to adopting the European currency and strong concerns about its negative impact on the Polish economy and domestic households, it is reasonable to question whether in such circumstances the decision to adopt the euro is legitimate and whether the public opinion may be crucial in the process of adoption common currency in Poland. What legal nuances are important in the referendum on the euro? The experience of other states that have been responsive to the will of the people on the adoption of the euro should be a warning. The Swedes and Danes voted to retain the national currency, based not merely on economic arguments, but also on national symbols.
Foreign currency loans concentrated in 2012 a major share of credit portfolio of the whole banking sector in Poland. Among them the most important part had loans indexed or denominated in swiss franc and euro. Due to very long crediting periods (20–30 years) as well as lack of common availability hedging instruments to retail clients, currency loans may unexpectedly generate additional costs and materialize fx risk into credit risk. One of the method of optimizing of costs of currency loans repayment is a conscious choice of a day of currency purchase, which will be used next to pay back installments of the loan. The results of research show that one may distinguish days when franc and euro priced toward Polish zloty give reduction of costs of currency loans.
Do każdej z nich próbuje znaleźć racjonalne wytłumaczenie i rozwiązanie je zmniejszające.

Fears of Polish society associated with the introduction of the euro largely stem from ignorance of citizens and media reports about the so-called . crisis in the euro zone . The greatest danger associated with the conversion of currency to the public is the risk of rising prices. Social concerns can be reduced by conducting thorough education in the form of the information campaign . The purpose of this article is to propose solutions that the author can contribute to reduce social fears associated with the Polish accession to the euro zone. Proposals for Polish operations , as well as those used in the countries forming the Economic and Monetary Union , should be included in future information campaign on the conversion of the currency in Poland. In this article the author examines the individual concerns of the Polish society based on public opinion polls. For each of them the author is trying to find a rational explanation and solution reducing them.
The article looks at factors determining the level of public support for the euro in Poland and other countries across the European Union. It aims to systematize the results of research in this area. Existing research on this topic is based on either Eurobarometer data or country-specific surveys, the author says, adding that the determinants of public support for the euro can be classified into three main categories: macroeconomic variables, microeconomic factors (individual characteristics, including socio-demographic and socioeconomic variables), and factors related to “the psychology of money”. Official documents and reports on various countries’ integration with the euro area predominantly consider two types of aspects, the author says: macroeconomic – in particular those focused on the balance of costs and benefits of euro adoption, and those related to practical preparations for euro adoption. On the basis of the literature review, the author argues for the need to complement these studies with a view from the perspective of the psychology of money, which considers psychological and social factors, in addition to purely economic aspects. Euro adoption is not a purely economic event, but a multidisciplinary – economic, political, social and psychological – process, the author says.

This paper deals with economic growth in the Eurozone before and after 1999. The economic integration process led to the finalizing of initiatives that started at the end of the 1950s with the Rome Treaty and Coal&Steel Community. The introduction of the euro in the 1999 affected countries that substituted their national monies for the common currency. A question emerges; whether this last step in economic integration contributed in any manner to changes in the pace of accumulation of national wealth? The literature on growth offers a wide pattern of factors that could be responsible for GDP developments. Some of the most prominent factors were present in the focus group due to the EU’s membership and euro introduction. Trying to answer the question about growth effects in the Eurozone, a simple statistical test for mean equality in two populations (with normal distribution) was employed. The weighted average GDP per capita growth rate was tested to examine if it was statistically different in the Eurozone before and after 1999. It turned out that it was not justified at a p=0.05% confidence level to reject the hypothesis that average growth rates were not statistically different. Concluding on this result calls for the following interpretation. Introducing the euro in 1999 did not contribute in a significant manner to changing the average growth rate in the EMU. However, having a common currency in operation may have seemed neutral for economic growth at that time. Referring to the literature allows us to claim that postulated gains to economic growth materialized at earlier stages of integration. The real effects of the euro seem to have a much more subtle nature.

Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie wzrostu gospodarczego w Europie przed i po roku 1999. Procesy integracji gospodarczej doprowadziły bowiem do ukoronowania wysiłków zapoczątkowanych w końcu lat 50. ubiegłego stulecia Traktatem Rzymskim oraz Wspólnotą Węgla i Stali wprowadzeniem wspólnego pieniądza.
