The aim of this paper is to prove that Ajñeya (pseudonym of S. H. Vātsyāyan, 1911–1987), a Hindi writer of poetry and prose, formulated some theoretical essentials for kahānī as a literary genre, which influenced its further development in the second half of the 20th century. Examples from his selected short stories and theoretical essays have been quoted to illustrate issues which preoccupied the Hindi literary environment in its transition from tradition to modernity. The issues discussed in this paper refer to more general questions of a modern Indian writer’s attitude towards a loss of traditional values and a search for identity in an encounter with the West. Ajñeya’s contribution to the development of the modern short story still requires recognition because he was often criticized for excessive intellectualism and individualism. This situation started to change after his centenary jubilee celebration in 2011. The paper includes an outline of trends prevailing in Hindi short stories, which helps us to examine Ajñeya’s modern approach. Materials analyzed in subsequent sections reveal demands which he formulated towards modern authors of short stories. His claim for the liberation of a writer and the personal experience as a source of literature has been illustrated with quotations from the short story Kalākār kī mukti. It proves the writer’s awareness of tensions which affected Hindi literature in the time of transition. In this context the term mukti is presented as one of the key-words of his writings. His deliberations on the change within the concept of reality in Indian literature and transformation of Indian literary audience are discussed. The quotations from further short stories (i.e. Nayī kahānī kā ploṭ, Alikhit kahānī, Kavitā aur jīvan. Ek kahānī, Tāj kī chāyā me͂) reveal how realistic, mythical or romantic plots and characters are juxtaposed in one work. The examples from: Paramparā. Ek kahānī and Sikṣā present Ajñeya’s postulate of revealing deeper truths in literature. The usage of symbols, the means of suggestive language as well as techniques of building an “atmosphere” of the modern short story are analyzed (Gaiṇgrin, Alikhit kahānī, Darogā Amīcand, Hīlī-bon kī battakhẽ). In this context an application of traditional poetics of rasa to contemporary texts is investigated. The paper leads to the conclusion that while mastering the skill of short story writing, Ajñeya acted also as a theoretician, who attempted to teach Hindi writers and critics how to save their own tradition and identity in a clash with the West. He postulated that modernity should not exclude exploring one’s own traditional literature and art, it should focus on its transformation into modern idioms. This claim is presented as the writer’s literary manifest. Ajñeya’s demands analyzed in this paper are explained as resonating with some criteria of a modern short story later defined by the writers of naī kahānī school. It leads to the final conclusion that his achievements is this genre possess model features for creating modern short stories in Hindi.

In the 90s, J. L. A. Garcia came up with a specific proposal for the African American perspective on bioethics. The text describes the specificity of that approach in bioethics; in particular, it focuses on the concept of race used by Garcia in the context of historical changes of this idea in the 20th century. African American bioethics revaluates the notion of race, but do not totally rejects it. On the contrary, African American bioethics does not favor of “color blindness”, which is not conducive to the emancipation (eg. in the context of medicine).

Author of this paper zooms in at the concept of cultural morphology created by a revolutionary-conservative of German origin- Oswald Spengler. In his opus magnum Der Untergang des Abendlandes Spengler presented a trully catastrophic philosophy of history of human societies. Said history is a complicated puzzle made of various cultures- defined as sole organic identities, beings emerging in specific geographical parameters that are complete in their effigy and particularity and independent from other collectives of that sort. Cultures considered as the greatest characters of historical processes as such are subject to thousand-years cycle conditioned by biological rhythm of birth, adulthood and death. According to Spengler, broadly analyzed western culture appeared on European continent in X century and moved to civilisational phase in XIX century. One of the most grave symptoms of its crisis was prophecised in several publications from the third decade of XIX century coloured world revolution, a confrontation of people of colour against white population of the West.

Norwid, who lived in exile in Paris, took a great interest in comparative mythology and historical linguistics, using a similar methodology for both. This article attempts to establish the sources of his own mythological and linguistic speculations. It turns out that he knew both the writings of the acknowledged authorities in this field who used a positivist methodology, and the Catholic dictionaries published by the Abbé Migne which aimed at reconciling the discoveries of positivist science with the Christian tradition. Norwid’s knowledge derived from both sources, although he felt a greater closeness to the perspective of the Catholic dictionaries (even though he did not blindly accept all their findings). The “archaic” (from a positivist perspective) roots of his mythological and linguistic speculation defended him, however, against the temptation to give in to a [pseudo-]scientific racial discourse. Here, his Christian universalism goes hand-in-hand with Renan’s agnostic universalism. The essential element of this universalism derived, in both cases, from an emphasis on the supranational value of traditions linked with the Old Testament and Judaism.

„Archaiczne” (z punktu widzenia nauki pozytywistycznej) korzenie jego spekulacji mitologicznych i językoznawczych broniły go jednak przed pokusą ulegania (pseudo)naukowemu dyskursowi rasowemu.

The article presents the results of a quantitative research, which explores the varieties of Polish national identity and analyses how they translate into attitudes towards minorities and other nations. It draws on the data from the survey with nationally representative address-based sample of adult Poles (aged 15 years or older). Using the k-mean clustering method it identifies three types of Polish national identity: the nationless, the civic-oriented and ‘credentionalists’. The results indicate that these types of national identity differentiate and predict the reluctance towards ethnic, religious and sexual minorities as well as towards other nations. In general, the study confirms the existence of more universal patterns in defining national identities; it confirms the existence of correlation between the ethnic criteria as well as the usage of a higher number of criteria in defining national identity and more exclusionary attitudes. Drawing on the nationally representative sample and applying the analysis method that allows for distinguishing separate categories, the study verifies the exiting typologies of Polish national identity.

The article contains a review of bell hooks’ Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center (1984; Wydawnictwo Krytyki Politycznej, Warszawa 2013, second edition 2022). The text by the American scholar presents groundbreaking theses for the development of the Black feminism movement – she was one of the first to draw attention to the need to take into account various social determinants of violence against women. At the same time, it emphasizes the exclusionary and marginalizing assumptions of second-wave feminism that dominated in the mid-twentieth century. In my review, I reflect on the importance of republishing a theoretical book that examines the systemic violence faced by Black women in a patriarchal and white society. For me, it is important to ask about the relevance of hooks’ reflections and the role they play in thinking about feminism in contemporary capitalist society. I also reflect on the applicability of hooks’ theory in Polish feminism context.

The article presents how the concept of “race” was understood in Polish society and reflects upon its historical variability. We discuss the results of the surveys conducted in 1988, 1998 and 2018, as well as the qualitative study from 2022. In both types of research, we are interested in the categories used to define race, as well as the valuations of the humanity’s phenotypic diversity, which constitutes the main component of racist thinking. In the article, we point out that the respondents perceive the diversity of the human world not so much in terms of racial differences related to phenotypic diversity, but mainly in terms of cultural, civilizational and ethnic differences. Therefore, we introduce the term “civilizational racism”: in Poland, its sources can be traced to the perception of the peripheral position of the country in the world and to the awareness of the historical lack of contacts with racially different groups.

The following paper is an attempt at linking analysis of the historical forms of antisemitism with examination of the present day European Islamophobia. Its goal is to answer a following question: to what extent are the historically known mechanisms of etnicization and racialization of religious difference of European antisemitism also present in the anti-Islamic discourses? In the paper there is a proposal of criteria that might serve as a basis for classification of particular anti-Islamic discourses as racism. The author claims that such classification requires problematizing both modern European concept of religion as well as relations between religion and race as categories of belonging. In the paper this task is performed by reference to anti-essentialist theories from a field of anthropology of religion.

In the Polish debate and research on begging, there is a tendency to combine this topic with social pathologies, culture, skin colour and race. Due to the use of the above-mentioned categories in the discussed research, I adopted the perspective of the postcolonial theory as the appropriate method of analysing the scientific discourse on begging. Based on the empirical research analysed in the article, I show that the ethical standards used in the research are inconsistent with the UNESCO Experts’ Declaration developed in the mid-twentieth century, recognising the category of race as unscientific. A practice of particular concern in this regard is the coding of empirical data based on racial categories imposed on Roma in the context of identifying begging with criminality. Within these approaches, I identified the essential and cultural approach to begging and the concept of a happy beggar created on its basis. On the other hand, at the level of content and conclusions, the ideological stake of the analyses carried out, aimed at rationing the social usefulness of work and its control, is revealed. In this context, the emerging aim of the research and tasks of the social assistance system is to “provide care” for the activity of citizens and forcing the population able to work to undertake it.

The aim of this article is to present several portraits of Poles and Germans in the Polish-language prose of the Galicia region in the second half of the 19th century, and to demonstrate their connection to the issues of colonialism. On the example of the prose of Józef Rogosz and Ignacy Maciejowski the author of the article shows that sometimes terms relating to culture, civilization and race were used to construct portraits of both nations. Thus, they perfectly fit strongly ideologized nationalistic discourse of colonization nature and reflect the anti-Polish attitudes prevailing at that time in the countries of the German cultural circle.

Contemporary obesity epidemic discourse galvanizes racism and classism under the veil of “care,” and is used to further stigmatize mostly poor people of color. I examine the intersection of fatness, race, and masculinity to show how in the case of black male bodies fatness is criminalized and used to legitimize excessive violence inflicted on those bodies. I discuss the oftentimes conflicting projections attached to fat black male bodies to analyze the mechanism that enable not just the criminalization of race and poverty, but also of fatness in the American culture of personal responsibility. I also discuss the unacknowledged racial and gender biases or fat studies, which partially impede the analysis of non-white non-female bodies.

The Polish romantic poet Cyprian Norwid and the Russian philosopher and sociologist Piotr Lavrov met while living as exiles in Paris during the seventies of the XIX century. They respected each other, although their worldviews could at first sight not be reconciled (but they were both discontent of the political status quo). Lavrov was an atheist and considered religion to be a „reactionary” force in the age of scientific progress, slowing down the further emancipation of the individual (though previously it performed a positive role). Norwid-on the other hand-thought that progress without roots in Christian sacrality would restrict the idea of humanity and reduce it to a physiological determinism. This article shows the debate between a Polish catholic and an atheist Russian in the context of the period. It focuses on the negative consequences of a narrow scientist attitude (as a matter of fact, rejected by Lavrov), e.g. the relation between contemporary anthropological research and racial theories.

Indian classical music uses a highly sophisticated system of melodic structures (rāga), which relate with particular states of mind (rāsa). In this relation, there is significant importance of tiny micro-intervallic nuances in the tuning of ragas. This article brings results of research called Ragas and emotions realized by Musical Acoustics Research Centre (Academy of Performing Arts in Prague). The goal of the project was to prove if emotional states rāsa, traditionally connected with certain ragas, can be perceived by Western listeners too, either familiar with listening to Indian music or totally inexperienced. The basis of this study is an online listening test which was prepared with a collaboration of significant Indian musician Amit Chatterjee (NYC/ Calcutta). The processing of results employs various statistical methods (factor analysis, Cronbach alpha, Pearson’s correlation) that show different levels of sensitivity between respondents for specific emotions. Various listening strategies among the respondents and their subgroups were revealed. The results of respondents are also put into comparison with an evaluation of emotional content done by the performer himself. In the next step, there was a research of correspondence between particular emotional states and specific micro-intervals (śruti), which shows some interesting connections between an occurrence rate of certain characteristic intervals in a given raga and particular emotions. For example, the interval of a major seventh (15/8) corresponds here with the emotions of joy and love, and partially with solemnity and compassion, which confirms the traditional Indian approach. Specific relation came out between emotion of fear and the interval of the low minor second (25/24, which is 29 cents lower than the tempered minor second), which is a characteristic interval of raga Marwa, traditionally connected with the aspect of death.

Artykuł poświęcono analizie splotu klasy z rasą w powieściach „Bez dogmatu” i „Rodzina Połanieckich” Henryka Sienkiewicza.

The paper is devoted to an analysis of the concourse of class and race in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novels „Bez dogmatu” („Without Dogma”) and „Rodzina Połanieckich” („Polaniecki Family”). These works display such forms of racing social divisions as biologisation, concentration, and animalisation. A comparison of the two novels and reference to the writer’s private correspondence as well as his earlier pieces on contemporary matters lead to the conclusion that class racism is an element of Sienkiewicz’s own social view.
