Organizing Sports in Poland from the Media Perspective – a Discourse Analysis The aim of this article is to verify the way that the media depict organizing sports in Poland. Using the method of discourse analysis to look at chosen press articles, the author tries to understand the power relations within this sector and discuss the reasons of the journalists’ negative attitude towards the realm of traditional sports. It is usually presented as rigid and not entrepreneurial. In the conclusion the author elaborates on the effectiveness of the media in shaping the public opinion and forcing real changes.

The article discusses representations of artificial intelligence (AI) in popular culture, mainly in the movies. The author focuses on AI turning against a man, seeking his extermination or enslavement. The paper investigates cinematic concepts of the birth of AI in the context of technological singularity. In these works which present maturing of AI we may observe that often its motives and aims which we assess as sinister are, in fact, the reaction to human actions. Emotional nature of AI and its irritating interactions with less intelligent and reasonable people has been revealed. The author discusses sources of genocidal plans, and separately examines tensions caused by AI representations in androids. In the light of the analysis, AI is a screen on which phantasms related to the tensions in the global risk society are projected. The anxiety of AI rebellion is an emanation of our loss and fear in technicized world. The popular culture conceals a worrisome fact that we are responsible for potential disaster.

The article presents the results of the analysis of the strategies of hierarchization in public utterances which appeared in the media debate over unemployment among university graduates. The aim of the investigation was to grasp the way the procedures of discourse control, which were introduced into the public debate over higher education in Poland, interact with one another to produce and reinforce a particular “truth” about the university. The objects of our analysis were the ways of identifying the following places by the media actors: a) the privileged positions from which the truth of a given social order is told and within which the common good may be expressed, and b) the positions which are opposite to the latter and from which only a particular interest and “populist” demands can be articulated. These two categories in the debate were successively filled by the following groups: entrepreneurs (bearing witness to the truth about the low level of instruction at universities) and the representatives of social sciences and humanities defending themselves against these accusations. The diversity of argumentative strategies was revealed at the three levels of the order of discourse, namely, hierarchization of responsibility, hierarchization of access to the truth and hierarchization of interests.

Różnorodność strategii argumentacyjnych została ujawniona na trzech poziomach porządku dyskursu, a mianowicie: hierarchizacji odpowiedzialności, hierarchizacji dostępu do prawdy i hierarchizacji interesów.

The article contains critical reflections on the image of school as it has been established in communication. The author refers to the theoretical findings in linguistic anthropology, and introduces the concepts of “the point of view” and “the cognitive perspective.” With the use of these concepts, knowledge derived from experiencing extra-linguistic reality can be extracted; the starting point for the reflection on the linguistic image of the world being the observation that language as such is an instrument for aggregating knowledge as well as evaluating the reality experienced by human beings. The analysis of the collected research material shows that the image of school imbedded in the language and public discourse (academic, cultural, in the media) is not uniform. The possible reason for this lack of uniformity is that community experience and a value system revealing individual and collective points of view is deposited in language.

We only know how people understand what is being said or written once they have told us. Undoubtedly, understanding also includes non-linguistic or pre-linguistic components that elude verbalisation and thus cannot be communicated. However, by participating in discourse we can make sense of our experiences since we can perceive it in terms used by other participants talking about theirs. Experience that cannot be grasped linguistically remains mute. Therefore, as I see it, only what is textually accessible can be the remit of discourse analysis. This distinguishes discourse analysis from the cognitive approach whose remit it is to extrapolate from what is said to the mental representations, and to design the innate and acquired thought processes to which they owe their emergence. As I understand the cognitive approach of Alexander Ziem and Björn Fritsche, working with Dietrich Busse’s frame concept, they cannot but fail to convincingly model the presumed cognitive processes. For though they insist that a “cognitive-constructive share” complements the formation of mental representations, they must concede that it is ultimately the discursively constituted categories that determine how we experience reality. What matters for us as members of a discourse community is less what happens in our heads than how we, by talking about it, discursively create our reality, both as individuals as well as collectively.

The joint bicentenary commemorations of the beginning of the independence movements in Latin America evolved out of the Ibero-American Conference as the foundation of the Grupo Bicentenario shows. However it is not the first commemoration cycle that involves the once colonial power Spain and its former Latin American colonies. Some 20 years ago this group of countries commemorated the quincentenary of the so-called discovery of America. The interpretation of the results obtained in a comparative study of Spanish, Mexican and Venezuelan legislation on the politics of memory, applied in the context of the mentioned commemorations, will propose answers to the following questions: What are the orders, power relations and discourses that dominate the politics of memory in the Ibero-American Community? What are the transformations between the quincentenary and the bicentenaries?

The issue of shaping the social reality through the language which speaks about it is subject to interdisciplinary research. In this article, by adopting the framing category identified in the language, I would like to demonstrate that there is a semantic space to show the place of the adult and of the child in the pre-school education. The frame means mental structures which shape the way of conceiving phenomena and of seeing the world, as well as it determines a perspective for viewing social issues. This is used in the discourse analysis. The report on the author’s research presented in the text is an attempt to find some contexts in which one might seek a reply to the question to which extent the way of specking of education is/ may be a limitation to the way of understanding the educational function of the kindergarten. A quality analysis comprises some texts of enunciations of teachers and parents.

The recent decision of the Polish Ministry of National Education to make specialized language a compulsory part of vocational training sets the context of this argument. Teachers of professional secondary schools will now face new methodological challenges, so it is important to give them appropriate tools to address these. This paper examines the best known models of genre analysis used in the study of LSP : Bhatia (1993); Askehave and Swales (2000), and the Analyse Différentielle des Discours: Mourlhon-Dallies (2008), reflecting on the possibilities of their practical use in the teaching of LSP.

Despite its growing popularity within the humanities and social sciences, the concept of discourse (and also discourse analysis) continues to be perceived as rather vague by those who are not experts in the domain of discourse analysis. The aim of the present paper is to acquaint non-specialist readers with the multifold, interdisciplinary nature of discourse in order to further consider its usefulness with reference to foreign language pedagogy. It is argued that a wider use of this concept may lead us to a more coherent view of the main issues underlying our field, namely by integrating into our thinking both social and individual communicative practices. This idea is illustrated with selected conceptual tools and the views advanced by leading French discourse analysts (e.g. Charaudeau, 1993, 2010; Maingueneau, 1996, 2005) and, up to this point, mainly exploited in studying the media and public communication. Moreover, the importance of typological distinctions in foreign language pedagogy is stressed and an example of a discursive approach to foreign language instruction is provided. At the same time, attention is drawn to inherent and/or objective limitations on and difficulties in a wider use of the concept of discourse. These problems notwithstanding, the conclusion points to the fact that, given the complexity of our domain, it is hardly conceivable nowadays that we can be content with oversimplified formulae and limited, one-sided theories.

This paper outlines relevant issues in analyzing foreign language classroom communication patterns. Following a brief theoretical and historical background, it proceeds to discuss technical aspects of data collection and elaboration. Recording interaction between teachers and students is difficult but it later leads to an even more challenging task of transcribing talk. For this purpose, the article offers model instances of different traditions in compiling transcripts. However, the bulk of the present text is devoted to the exemplification of different applications of analysis of educational discourse. The samples, drawn from classroom interactions involving English, French and Polish as L2, illustrate topics such as corrective feedback, metatalk, the use of L1, and teacher questions. At the end, recommendations are given regarding further explorations and readings.

Translation conditioned by the recipient’s perspective is a necessary requirement for the effective transfer of knowledge to a novice by an expert. To a great extent, the effectiveness depends on the ability to balance between the expert’s own communication habits and the need to adapt to the capabilities of the recipient. In the discourse relating to the activities of start-ups, the process of knowledge transfer seems highly diverse in terms of, among others, the level of the transferred knowledge, the form of communication, or the diversity and interchangeability of the participants who take the role of experts and novices. Simultaneously, in view of the fact that the start-up has become a part of mass culture and tends to arouse much interest, the knowledge about the specifics of start-ups undergoes intensive dissemination. Hence, the activity of start-ups becomes the debatable content of the variety of discourse types, both specialist and non-specialized ones. The analysis of the texts reveals that translation – because of the recipient’s perspective associated with the simplification of content – is becoming the method of establishing links between those network-forming discourses.

Election of Donald Tusk as President of the European Council has elicited another vehement, nationwide debate in Poland. During this discussion two opposite points of view have been presented. Representatives of the first of them, have claimed that this election should be interpreted as a huge success of prime minister, whereas supporters of the second perspective have argued that it is just cowardly escape from responsibility. In consequence Donald Tusk has been presented both, as a statesman for whom this election is culmination of brilliant career, and as a compromised politician, who accepted lucrative but extremely unimportant job. The author attempts to analyse this debate using Harold Garfinkel’s conception of the documentary method and categories taken from discourse analysis as a theoretical framework.

The aim of this article is to identify thematic contexts in which the Polish language is discussed in Lithuanian online news portals and to analyse how the situation of teaching, learning, and using the Polish language is presented in the media in terms of the rights of language users. The article overviews the status of the Polish language in Lithuania on the basis of analysis of Lithuanian information portals. For this purpose, the three most popular Internet portals were selected: delfi.lt, lrt.lt, and 15min.lt. Media articles were extracted using the Google Chrome Web Scraper tool. Seventy-two articles from the years 2019-2023 were chosen for the study. The articles covered topics such as the results of students’ education in national minority schools, the level of Lithuanian language proficiency in minority schools, the teaching of Polish as a foreign language, public signs in Polish, and court cases concerning the use of the Polish language. During the selected period, the media articles primarily focused on the Polish language in the context of education and legislation, disregarding discussions related to Polish culture.

Zapowiedź planowanej premiery spektaklu „Śmierć i dziewczyna” w Teatrze Polskim we Wrocławiu wywołała medialną burzę.

This paper aims to explore the traces of ideology in court decisions from the Communism period in Albania. A court judgment on a certain case, except from playing a role in setting the punishment, it also reinforces the ideological stance of dictatorship. As recent studies of Discourse Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis highlight, ideology is linguistically mediated. The CDA methodological tools are used to analyze the linguistic categories that are marked by ideological traces. The paper also examines conceptual metaphors and the metaphoric scenarios employed in the above legal discourse fragments, which help communism construct its own legal and political reality. All the findings of this research prove that ideology outreaches the political realities, and it may also affect the legal discourse, especially during the lead of a communist dictatorship.
