The Mediterranean was a main region in the policy of the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1980s. This part of the world was one of the most important areas of rivalry during the Cold War after 1945. At that time it was the most militarized region in the world. In the postwar world, despite rapid advances in all types of communication, the Mediterranean retained its importance as a unique strategic maritime passageway because of the continuity of naval routes, air routes and strategic directions which largely coincide with the strategies of bloc activity. This article describes the presence of the naval forces of the USA and the USSR in the basin of the Mediterranean, the diplomatic and military rivalry between these superpowers and the implications of this competition for international relations at the end of the Cold War.

The formation of the Korean press was closely related to the process of the rebirth of the Korean language, which widened its range of use, created and differentiated new functional styles, and as a language of communication took over most areas of society, all in a short span of three decades. This emancipation of the language of the Korean press was inextricably intertwined with the Korean modernization movement following the forced opening of the country in 1876. During the modernizing of Korea in the final decades of the 19th century, both the pro-Western court circles and the reform-minded intellectual elite of Korea realized the necessity of creating a modern press. From this time on, a modern Korean press was also to provide an exchange of information between a Korea opening itself to the world. In the years 1881 and 1910 there were about 140 various newspapers published in Korea. From the time of the Japanese-initiated war in 1941 until their surrender in 1945, even the provincial Korean newspapers did not have a chance to publish any article without censorial oversight by the occupying forces. Only Korea's recovery of independence enabled the rebirth of an independent press at least in the southern part of the peninsula, and three years later in the newly proclaimed Republic of Korea.

'Trybuna Ludu' ('Tribune of the People') in Poland during the communist era was the main organ of the ruling communist party. It realized the tasks outlined by the party. It was a tool of communist propaganda. In 1965-1966 this daily journal attacked the Catholic Church and the Polish Primate Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski. The pretext was the letter of the Polish bishops to the German bishops, which the communist government appeared as an attempt to interfere with the Polish Episcopate in Polish foreign policy. In fact, the purpose of this attack was humiliating the Church in the eyes of the Polish people before the planned celebrations of the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Poland, which event is deemed also to be beginning of the Polish state.

There are three types of online folklore courses available at the University of Tartu: e-publications of open access study materials (subject web sites, e-lectures, and e-textbooks), video lectures (e.g., on DVD), virtual e-learning environment with limited access (three main e-learning platforms are used in Estonia: WebCT, Moodle, IVA). In this article the author focuses on his eight years of experience with WebCT, having worked as a learner, course compiler (including designer) as well as the lecturer. The need for web-based courses increased together with the growth and the broadened opportunities in the use of WWW. The fact that the web site of Estonian Folklore (www.folklore.ee) already featured a number of electronic databases as well as e-publications introduced the need for the use of these materials in educational work. WebCT enables the user to present material in written and audio format, present lore texts as audio or video recordings or images and thus present web lore in an entirely natural context. Present-day students have grown up in the computer era, which is why searching the Web for material is as natural to them as searching for information in books once was.

The importance of computer-mediated communication for contemporary culture cannot be overestimated. We - digital nomads - exchange information, build relationship and create communities by means of electronic discourse, which seems to have an important, even critical role to play for the rise and development of network society. Electronic discourse, originally textual, typed with a keyboard and read on a computer screen, has undergone changes and finally has became fully multimodal. At a heart of computer-mediated discourse analysis is its relationship to spoken and written language. The term 'hybridity' often appears in interpretations of electronic discourse. Several linguists or sociolinguist adopted the oral-written hybrid metaphor or emerging language centaur figure (part speech, part writing) to explain its nature. This article claims, however, that such an approach should be extended. The focus on language alone has meant neglected. Hypermedia confronts us with hypetexts which are not solely text but polisemic objects. Hypertextual, multimodal electronic discourse needs a theory which deals with integration of different modes of communication, languages, systems of representation that is characteristic for contemporary communication landscape. One of such theory - rhetoric of the design has been proposed by Gunther Kress from New London Group. The second intention of this article is to pay attention to those aspects of hybrid. Milan processes that are connected with digital, virtual aspects of electronic environment.

This article has three heroes: Walter Benjamin, his theory of reproduction and its social consequences; Bill Nichols, who has removed the first conception in the contemporary cultural context defined by a logic of cyber systems, and Jean Baudrillard with his famous simulation theory. Each of them has created his own conceptual apparatus which seems to be necessary for describing some objects of their studies. For example, Walter Benjamin uses such terms as: aura, techniques of the world reproduction, manual and technological reproduction. He also refers to the work of art and its role in industrial society; mass production and consumption and the issue of art authenticity. Bill Nichols elaborates on these problems in the postmodern optics, but takes into consideration three types of factors: a stage of capitalism, political ideologies and dominant philosophy, and the main medium and its ideology of visibility. The main terms of his theory are: a chip and simulation vs. copy and reproduction, an expansion of cyber systems and metaphors of computer imagination, techniques of simulation. Jean Baudrillard has created a simulation theory to portray a character of contemporary media production, the relations between them and the reality they pretend to represent and phenomenon of hyper-reality, a crisis of a representation principle and a new ontology of media images.

The author tries to answer the question to what extent the 'Japanese smile', which is so often described by Western authors, is an Oriental invention and to what degree it is actually rooted in the traditional Japanese cultural values. A definition was adopted according to which smile is a characteristic and easily recognisable mimic expression, which performs an important communicative function. Individual cultures can be different with respect to how smile is used in social life. The specific 'high context' communication, characteristic of the Far East, where not much has to be expressed by means of words because most information is contained in the context of the utterance, has been described. A hypothesis has been advanced that in such a situation smile will rarely be treated as a social signal, the meaning of which can be independent of the background. The most important part of the text is devoted to the description of hypothetical cultural scripts, which encourage or prevent from the use of smile in specific social situations. A relation between these scripts and the traditional values of Japanese culture, particularly those connected with the ideal of wa, i.e. social harmony, has been discussed. The author also tries to answer the question to what extent the etiquette of the Japanese smile is unique. The author concludes that the Japanese smile fits well into the cultural context of Japanese culture and stands out from other 'smiles of the Far East'.

In Canada, questions surrounding the relationship between identity formation among minorities and media are particularly fraught because of multicultural policy. The Little Mosque on the Prairie is a Canadian sitcom on CBC Television, created by Zarqa Nawaz. The show is full of interactions between the Muslims and the non-Muslim residents of the town of Mercy. The show reveals a variety of Islamic views and misunderstandings concerning the religious community. Using comedy as a unique way to break down barriers and to foster a platform for dialogue and cross-cultural understanding, The Little Mosque takes issue with mainstream media approaches to polarized frameworks of culture (Christian v. Muslim, Islam v. the West). Nawaz herself, however, states that the show's primary agenda is to be funny, not to be a political platform. This paper provides a critical review of the sitcom as a tool in shaping media representations of minorities in Canada.

The article discusses the prospects of 'cultural populism' (which was popularized within the framework of cultural studies), with special emphasis on John Fiske's ideas. This is a point of view, which helps to notice a creative or even subversive potential of the members of popular and consumer culture. This article discusses the concept of strategies and tactics advanced by Michel de Certeau, which was used by Fiske. These strategies belong to the area of activities taken by the dominant system, for example to persuade the consumer to use specific proposals. The consumer can approach these strategies with a number of tactics, which, although being temporary and not threatening the system, can be considered an important area in which the subjective semiotic creativity takes place. By using these tactics the consumer can undermine system meanings, renegotiate them and even use a stratagem to obtain signs (things) that have a high symbolic status. Tactics are accompanied by the jouisssance pleasure, which unlike the plaisir pleasure, is experienced by senses and generated when the dominant influence of social principles is avoided.
