The aim of this paper is to present the phenomenon of social exclusion of persons whose body has been deformed due to disease process. Modern concepts of stigmatization and sociocultural aspects, which can be the background of social exclusion process, are going to be shown. Authors’ own research fo- cused on how the bodies of women after mastectomy and those suffering from anorexia are perceived in the society. In the lights of obtained results, stigmatization process is in the more advanced stage in women with anorexia than in those after mastectomy. In women after mastectomy it stops on social labeling, but in the context of anorexia it reaches the stage of social rejection according to Link and Phelan’s (2001) theory, which can be connected with social attribution of responsibility for having a stigma (somatic vs mental illness).

This paper discusses the issues of labelling, normality and social deviation. I focus on the sociological and socio-psychological aspects of these topics in light of their importance for pedagogy. Labelling mainly concerns the ways in which the formal and constitutive institutions of social control, including schools, respond to behaviour. Mainly children and young people are "marked" or labelled according to both their existing and presumed patterns of deviant behaviour.School, as a social institution, expects its students to be normal. It has the power to define normality and, moreover, a network of social control to achieve it. However, from the perspective of the school it is very important not to prematurely label pupils negatively during the selection process. On the contrary, school should enable as many pupils as possible to contribute successfully towards the requirements of a knowledge society. Research indicates that there is a correlation between a child's school performance and the perceptions and expectations held by the teacher. Recent studies, concerning for example violence at school, have shown how strongly the aggressive behaviour of pupils is connected to the teacher's behaviour. The theory of labelling is concerned with the fundamental question of why some individuals and groups are branded as deviating from norms more often than others. Stigma is a relative phenomenon; it is the result of successful labelling, delivering a punitive and disapproving response. In order to better understand labelling, the concepts of social norms and social deviance also require clarification.

The authors examine the adequacy of Polish regulations on the protection of the image to the challenges to prevent stigmatization of people who come into contact with COVID-19 and the special role of the media. In authors opinion there is a social responsibility of media to protect image, as a part of the human privacy. The aim of this study is emphasising the particular role of media to reduce the risk of stigmatization and social exclusion. There are no publication on this subject what can mean also the lack of protection. The article fills the existing cognitive gap. The research problem is presented by showing adequate law regulations, judgements and literature, using the formal – dogmatic method and also law-empiric one. The authors give some law recommendation to protect human image in media during pandemic times. Those clues could minimize the stigmatization and social exclusion of those who come into contact with COVID-19.

The article analyzes three cases through which the avoidance of stigmatization is revealed in very different modes of auto-narration. Each case suggests that the narrators intuitively use a strategy of modal shift: they find ways to resist the metaphorization or universalization of their lives by highlighting the modality of contingency. The article draws primarily on phenomenological narratology (Wolfgang Iser, Roman Ingarden, David Carr, Paul Ricoeur), whose theories are combined with ideas from poststructuralist theorists (Giorgio Agamben, Paul de Man, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Ernesto Laclau). The common denominator of these three women’s stories is the applied modality of contingency and attempts to disrupt a predestined order of their life flow. Contingency, as a direction taken by the narrator, is an attempt to avoid situations in which an individual life is transformed into a common pattern or a metaphor, or in which an individual person becomes a symbol of a certain lifestyle or social group.

Aim: To put the human condition and the condition of the humanities in the perspective of critical human life situations and critical situations in the history of humanity. Methods: An analysis of primary sources and media statements by politicians and clerics. Results: The mutilation of human dignity is a constant element in the history of humanity. Man is a perpetrator, but also a victim of this mutilation. The constancy of mutilation of human dignity has its systemic sanction. Thus, it becomes a problem that transcends subjective conditions, for man is (becomes) a product of the system. Conclusions: The humanities, however, are incapable of putting what is singular, hat has happened, into a universal perspective beyond the area of declarative narrative. It is necessary, therefore, to reinterpret the basic concepts of the humanities seen in the perspective of critical human situations and the history of humanity.

In Adam Bede, George Eliot explores the way a society divides its members into categories and how these categories contribute to the formation of an individual’s identity. In the mid-nineteenth century authors in the naturalist tradition often discussed this dialogical relationship between individual and society, the specific roles for social gaze, the labeling and degrading. Eliot shows an acute of these labels that no one shapes identity without their influence. According to Nancy Anne Marck, Adam Bede introduces the theme of “emerging social consciousness” where the characters gain broader awareness of human interdependence through an experience of suffering (447). This is particularly evident when examining Eliot’s characters of “lesser fortune.” Once we’ve investigated how Eliot portrays these negative social forces throughout the novel, the labeling and the stigmatization, we will return to how Eliot addresses the larger question permeating her novel of education: how one judges another against the backdrop of community values.

This paper attempts to show an idea of art therapy as complex: social, psychological and cultural system. Art therapy, in this sense, is not just a therapy (in traditional sense). Due to critical philosophical and social theories art therapy, in intersectional perspective, is strictly connected with feminism, queer, critical art and postcolonial movement. The most important ideas of intersectional theory (such as awareness of multidimensional problems of minorities) are also important for art therapy which shows practical implications of art therapy’s theory. The article is concerned with art therapy as a discipline. It shows practical applications of intersectional ideas in institutional and existential perspectives of art therapist’s work. The text shows specific art movements connected with work against prejudice and stigmatization.

The paper is dedicated to an aspect of territorial marketing which is called region branding. It focuses on the branding of the lubelskie voivodship. The Lubelskie is classified in the public discourse as one of the „inherently backward” regions in Eastern Poland. As such, it has been subject to discursive stigmatization and institutional dis-crimination. Its case exemplifies processes of orientalism that were triggered in the country after the systemic change and – concerning the regions – reinforced after the institutionalization of new „big” regions in 1999. In the paper, the official strategy of branding Lubelskie is analyzed. The aim is to identify the ways in which the stigma of its „eastern backwardness” is treated in order to produce a new, positive and attractive image of this region to be promoted and sold as its competitive brand.

The presented excerpt of the study is an outline of the problem of trauma of Ukrainians displaced as part of the Operation Vistula in 1947 and effect it had on the next generations (children and grandchildren). The stigmatization and repressive actions that affected this community both from the state apparatus and local communities have taken their toll and forced them to adopt a range of protective measures. One of them was assimilation, another mimicry. Ukrainians who wanted to preserve their own national, religious and cultural identity often chose the "way of success". They dealt with sense of inferiority, sense of threat, injustice and regret with the need to achieve higher social positions and wealth that gave comfort in an uncertain times. Education, wealth, and social position were meant to help overcome fear, strengthen self-esteem and let them feel equal to Poles. In families who chose the silence strategy, the way to achieve safety was to forget. Trauma associated with the Operation Vistula and the decades-long post-war stigmatization of Ukrainians who wanted to preserve their own identity, had passed on the second and third generation to return in a situation of oppression.

The subject of study and analysis is formulating an evaluation of Electronic Supervision System by convicts. As a tool author’s Questionnaire of Electronic Supervision System Evaluation was used which contained scale of lie. Frame of mind was also controlled. To verify hypothesis formulation methods diagnostic sounding and statistical and comparative analysis were used. Factor analysis demonstrated that perception of Electronic Supervision System doesn’t bring a unitary opinion-opinions of ESS are incoherent in which we can single out three factors : Negative evaluations, Positive evaluations and Stigmatization. It turned out that “non flashing” prisoners have much more negative evaluation results of ESS than “flashing” prisoners. There weren’t any significant differences in terms of positive evaluations and perceptible Stigmatization between ‘flashing” and “non flashing’ groups.

Suicide is still one of the most stigmatized types of death, arousing controversy. There exists its special type: assisted suicide in which a one kills themselves with the help of another person. It is very interesting to compare the psychological consequences of these two forms of death for the suicide survivors – that is, the relatives of the ones who took their own lives. While there are many similarities between suicide and assisted suicide, certain "technical differences" between them can significantly affect the later functioning of the survivors. In the case of "ordinary" suicide, we distinguish factors that make it difficult to survive bereavement, while assisted suicide may sometimes also have a facilitating effect on this process. The literature review shows that suicide survivors experience a higher sense of guilt (exacerbated by sometimes felt relief), anger, abandonment and responsibility, and lower support and acceptance than the relatives of other deceased. Interestingly, they do not necessarily suffer from mental disorders more often, but they are more stigmatized and feel the need to hide the circumstances of their loved ones’ death. People left after the assisted suicide also sometimes experience emotions such as relief and a sense of abandonment, they tend to distance themselves from others and hide the truth about the death of their loved ones (in this case also because of the fear of legal consequences). The most significant differences, important for the later experience of bereavement, are the possibility of saying goodbye, as well as the belief that they provided their loved ones the "good death". These factors make it much easier to mourn, reduce the traumatic experience of grief. However, there are other factors potentially complicating bereavement – research shows that assisting in suicide correlates with certain mental disorders. This may be, for example, because of ethical doubts that this practice raises, conflict with the value system, potential remorse, alienation from the community after condemning such an act, fear of legal consequences and doubts if assisting in a suicide was a right decision.

This article is theoretical and empirical in character, presents fragments of authoritative quality ver- sions devoted to issues of teenage motherhood implemented by caregivers. The issues involved are stigmatization and autostigmatization of girls who became mothers before the age of eighteen, and additionally with their children in care and education facilities. Stigmatization practices were presented in the context of the chances and fate of former pastors of care and educational institutions that were mothers of teenage mothers.

The objective of this paper was to address the notion of family stigma related to mental illnesses and discuss relevant theoretical perspectives. The review of the literature performed in this study shows that concepts of “family stigma” and “stigma by association” are used interchangeably. Family stigma includes the prejudice and discrimination experienced by members of family of a person suffering from mental illness. For many families the stigmatization that surrounds mental illness is a central issue causing concern, anxiety, shame and self-blame. Moreover, family members can be considered somehow “contaminated” because of close relationship they have with the stigmatized mentally ill person in their family. It is shown that current research results indicate this type of stigma negatively affects family members and relatives. In the paper’s closure some educational programmes devoted to counteracting the family stigma linked to metal disorders are presented.

A zatem proces reintegracji będzie zmierzał do destygmatyzacji jednostki. Zasłużona stygma to uznanie swojej winy.

After completing the rehabilitation process in a closed institution, the individual is released. Social reintegration is nothing more than just the process of overcoming the ensuing oppressive situation. The individual expects help and change in their existing situation, and when these are not the case there appears humiliation which transforms into trauma. The latter can change into polytrauma and then a person com¬mit s acts against their own will, harm¬ing themselves. Social reintegration is an individualized process whereby an individual has a chance to me et a specialist who can neutralize difficult states and situations. It is a matter of time whether or not the person in the specialist’s care will respond with their humiliation to integration rationaliza¬tion. The question is if an individual will settle for being socially marginalized, underpriviliged and pauperized, or – by rejecting these states of identity - will turn them into socially accepted behaviour. Thus, what is meant here is per¬sonal traits which are essential for the role of reintegration process perform¬er – on the one hand as a protector, educator and helper, and on the other one – as an expert and advisor. When establishing normative law and an in¬stitutional system, what must be de¬veloped is such solutions which would allow probation officers to perform the above functions. Consequently, the prabation officer, counselor or social therapist, as reintegration experts with appropriate skills and techniques, are able to bring about a temporal and interpersonal change in an individual. A new image and lifestyle of the person undergoing therapy will be shaped through the strategy of destigmatisation and overcoming stress, i.e. getting out of an oppressive situation. This is a methodical, targeted and organized process, which has specific phases: successful institutional rehabilitation followed by rehabilitation in the open system. Its aim is to prepare an in¬dividual to change their former image and lifestyle through developing rel¬evant competencies, knowledge, selfassessment and motivation. Given the above, there should be developed individual rehabilitation programmes, Le. offers of change. The word “offer” im¬plies that one person proposes changes, and the other participates in the process by jointly determining aims and tasks which can result in the programme implementation. In order for an offer to bring about a real change in an individual’s behaviour, there must be provided proper means and tools necessary to accomplish direct and indirect services of a formative and therapist nature. This can be don e by means of original rehabilitation offers. What is necessary on the part of the community, however, is a network of institutionalized specialist services as a response to honesty, diligence and usefulness, i.e. axiological paradigm of social identity which is really put into operation.

The paper compares discussions in 12 groups of university students (6 Slovak and 6 Scottish) equal in sex and age. The participants discussed the same problem - how to control the spread of HIV/AIDS and respect medical confidentiality (MC). Systematic comparisons revealed striking differences between the two national groups. The Scottish discussants were more cooperative than the Slovaks; they devoted more attention to analysing the problem and to creating a shared understanding of it. Although there was a temptation to contravene MC and the individual rights of those infected with HIV in both the Slovak and Scottish groups, only the Scottish discussants came to the conclusion, collaboratively and through argumentative exchange, that such proposals would be counterproductive in controlling the spread of HIV or in protecting public health. In the Slovak groups even participants who were opposed to discriminative proposals were not able to convince their fellow discussants that MC should not be contravened. Links are drawn between the findings and critical pedagogy and inclusion.

The article presents the role of stigma in the context of criminal social adaptation. It shows the theory of stigmatization and social mechanisms of marking. It also presents the stereotypical image of the criminals and the problem of changing social attitudes to prisoners, which is a prerequisite for the success of their social adaptation after leaving the penitentiary institutions.

Children’s literature is sometimes considered to be the poor relation of literary genres throughout the world, as it is often confined to the rank of literature for the very young. Yet, on closer inspection, does this literature not play an important role in establishing national identity? In other words, does it contribute to the spread of tolerance and therefore to living together? Backed by Pierre Barbéris’ sociocriticism and structured in three parts, this contribution first illustrates the motivations behind the characters’ behavioural imposture; then examines the internal components that articulate the novel’s literality. Finally, the analysis shows that Jeanne Abou’ou’s Lettre à Tita 2, beyond the stigmatization of a poorly assumed modernism or the exaltation of traditional values, deeply encapsulates the writer’s desire to postulate an emerging world in which Cameroonians would readily identify themselves.
