For musicians and musicologists, 'timbre' is an element of a musical work which is responsible for the organisation of its progress; for psycho-acousticians, 'timbre' refers to acoustic events which often have only a phonological aspects, as well as acoustic events which, apart from phonological characteristics, have syntactic and semantic features. The article presents the state of research into timbre both from the acoustic point of view, and from the point of view of its functioning within music. It aims to sketch a general description of the research, its subjects and the methods it employs, up to and including the final decade of the twentieth century. Among the many detailed conclusions from the research, there are also more general observations which deserve attention. These include the fact that the properties of timbre revealed during the perception of music are in part a function of the acoustic properties of the perceived objects, and in part a function of perceptual processes. An important aspect of these deliberations is also the claim that appropriately shaped timbre causes different perceptual effects, which contribute towards producing concrete auditory representations of the perceived material.
This study explored educational cost using a multidimensional scaling approach. Undergraduates rated how similar 11 items on task value and cost were with one another. Results show that cost has two dimensions, each consisting of two clusters. In one dimension, cost is separated from task value components; in the other, cost is clustered with task value components. Findings imply nuances of cost in the context of goal theory, motivation, and emotion.
Post Critical Belief Scale (Horvath - Szabo, 2003; Hutsebaut, 1996) orders different approaches towards religion into two dimensions: Inclusion vs. Exclusion of Transcendence and Symbolic vs. Literal processing of religious contents. Recently a new computational method was developed for the scale directly assessing the underlying two-dimensional structure by PCA. These dimensions can be henceforth associated with several other variables. Recently published results as well as theoretical and methodological aspects of the computational process will be reviewed in the article. Applicability of the method was tested on a sample of 1820 subjects. Results show that internal structure of the Flemish and Hungarian versions of the scale is predominantly identical. Existence of the two dimensions could be found in Hungarian sample regardless of gender and denomination. Furthermore, stability of the internal structure was high across the subsamples. The authors proposed a shortened 18 item version of the scale that can be seen as a substitute of the original 33 item version. In sum, their results showed that two-dimensional computation of the Post Critical Belief Scale is a reliable method that can provide new insights for psychological investigation of religiosity.
Part II contains numerical and graphical exploratory analysis results and elements of their medical interpretation for the set of the hematological observations and hematological variables. On the basis of correlation matices, matrix of scatterplots with overlaid regression lines and two and three-dimensional biplots relationships between parameters of blood during hemoperfusion is examined. For comparison purposes also MDS and one-way and two-way cluster analysis are performed. Usefulness of applied methods of multivariate data ordination to inspect, e.g. variables' interdependencies was assessed. Applied methods gave very close results and the medical interpretation of the results confirm some physiological clotting ideas. The practical results confirm some hypothesis describing polymer-blood interactions. Additionally, the results of principal factor analysis and multidimensional metric scaling with cluster analysis are concordant. The variety of applied exploration data methods confirm results and give the possibility of looking at data from different point of views.
Part I of the work characterizes the data of human blood parameters. It describes examined biomedical data set and used multivariate statistical exploratory methods like PCA, FA, MDS and clusters analysis. To the factor analysis methods belongs the biplots visualization method. Biplots are simply the scatterplots with the superimposition of the variables. The work compares different other alternative multivariate exploratory data analysis procedures from methodological point of view. The described multivariate ordination methods are applied in the Part II of the work 'Application'.
