The empirical research carried out in different countries on the performance of family businesses in comparison to their non-family counterparts show that the former are more effective than the latter. The natural source of the family business competitive advantage is family, social capital. Trust is a major element which makes up the capital. In the paper, the author describes the nature of the trust and identifies critical conditions necessary to sustain this strategic resource as time goes by and the business grows. According to the concept by Sundaramurthy to sustain the emotional trust in family businesses, their found-ers and managers have to focus on developing other forms of trust which are complementary to the emotional one and support it. Family firms have potential to generate bigger cross-border social capital, which lets them achieve better results in foreign markets.

Empirical evidence is growing which shows that social capital contributes to economic development on local and regional scales, and is an ubiquitous component and determinant of progress in many kinds of development projects and an important tool for poverty reduction. Today, the importance of social capital for the economy is undisputed. Many scientific papers have been written on this subject but missing are papers on tools and ways to stimulate and develop social capital. This paper makes such an attempt.

The phenomenon and the notion of social capital are not new, but they are being approached and discussed in the context of new concepts of sustainable development of rural areas. The authoressess present the main conclusions and observations from an international Summer Academy devoted to the issue of social capital of rural areas that was organized in Finland . For more information about the organizer of workshops, about its forms and methodology see the previous abstract of the same authoresses' article. They also present, using the examples of Finish villages, the process and effects of the strengthening of the social capital of rural communities.

By employing the concept of a social capital the author argues that the best measure of a theoretical development for any economic theory of organisation is its contribution in the understanding of a social capital. In this way social capital is becoming one of the key factors of evolutionary changes within the economic theory of organisation. The author further wishes to point out how the evolutionary progress in economic theory of organisation brings about increasingly improved understanding of the relations in the theoretical models. However, the concession required for this improvement is a lower degree of a theoretical generalisation and more intense heterogeneity of the economic theory itself. The less effort an economic theory of organisation devotes to being theoretically impeccable, the more abundant are the increasing returns it yields through its findings with regard to the aspect of the social capital.

The aim of this article is to put forward the following hypothesis: during the crisis of the trust non-used potential of the social capital is a barrier to low-income housing needs financing in Poland. Author presents the role of trust crisis in theory and practice pointing out definitions of the trust. In the second part of this paper author presents the possibilities of using social capital to financing housing needs. Trust creation, as a basic attribute of the social capital can have positive influence on the social well-being. However, it needs multifaceted acts at the local, regional and national level.

The subject of this article is analysis of dependences between social capital and trust in public authority subjects. Social trust means generalized trust directed to others. Trust is the crucial factor of social capital, which may be defined as potential of social participation and co-operation existing in particular community, based on shared values, norms and mutual trust. In consequence the high trust co-operation of group members is easier. The article presents factors that build high trust in public authority subjects. The article shows trust as the basic of cooperation in community and as key element of social capital.

The aim of the article is to indicate some conditions that may exert an influence on the implementation of the Pilot 'Leader+' Programme in the rural areas of Poland. One of the Programme's most important tasks is to stimulate the activity of local communities and the formation of local partner ties. In analysing the possibilities of achieving the earlier described objectives with the help of the 'Leader' initiative it is necessary to take into account several factors connected with the specific character of the Polish countryside. These factors may be decisive for the chances of and threats to the Programme's animation.

There is a debate in the literature concerning psychological and social effects of the Internet usage. A question is raised if this medium helps developing social contacts and building social support networks (enhance building social capital), increases psychological well-being, or the contrary - destroys social networks, lowers social trust, and makes people less happy (Putnam, 1995; 2000; Wellman et al., 2001; Kraut et al., 2002).Analysis, presented in this article, are based on the data of the representative Polish sample, gathered in the 'Social Diagnosis 2003' project. Three groups were compared. Two of them were created upon the criterion of intensity and length of the Internet usage. The third group consisted of those who don't use this medium at all. Influence of socio-demographic variables (such as: age, sex, education, place of residence, income) were also controlled. Results show that those who use the Internet, comparing to those who do not, have more sense of happiness, more friends, and declare more sense of social support. Moreover, the longer period of the Internet usage, the higher level of declared sense of happiness and social capital.

The rate of development of rural areas is not satisfactory both in the light of the existing needs and of the expectations of the rural population. It is not possible to make up fast for delays in Poland's civilisational development in relation to the advanced EU countries. This process takes time and requires patience and respect for the rule that 'tough' economic and infrastructure parameters are not the only determinants of the chances of individual communes. Another important determinant is 'social capital'. The success of efforts to release the potential represented by local communities depends on many factors, including a well functioning self-government, the emergence of rural leaders, an improvement in the general level of education, increased confidence and readiness to co-operate, etc. Local development and its prospects should be strictly associated with such programmes as 'LEADER' and 'Revival of Rural Areas'. This is the reason why greater attention should be given in the strategy for 2007-2013 to the elements which contribute to the development of social capital of the rural areas.

The paper begins with a discussion of the notion of social capital which seems to gain increasing popularity in both academic and media discourse. The concept of social capital can be understood in several, often contradictory, ways which proves useful both for its positive interpretation and critical analysis. The second part of the paper is devoted to the issue of the relationship between the notion of social capital and modernization theories. The final section of the text discusses three main ideological orientations of the contemporary Polish political discourse: the left (social-democratic) orientation, the right (conservative) orientation and the centre (liberal) orientation. These three discourses are linked to the ideal visions of Poland they imply. These visions in turn are presented both from the positive and critical standpoints. In all cases, it is shown how the notion of social capital can be used to support the arguments both for and against each of the orientations.

This article examines corruption trends in a sample of more than hundred countries. In the first part it documents that approximately 30 countries and three regions have the significant corruption trends, measured by Kendall's. Regarding the main regions in the world, corruption is increasing in Africa and in post-communist Europe as well, while the countries in the Orient are becoming less corrupt. The residuals from a standard corruption model show systematic variation that corresponds to the meagre information available on social capital. For a sub-sample of 22 European countries some social capital data are available, measured as generalised trusts scores. The article documents that the main force driving the variation in corruption trend are underlying trends in social capital. In practical level is the problem of corruption brought to the concrete economic-political conjunctions. The recent advances in social capital research imply that curbing income inequality and investing in education, overall institutional quality and political stability could result in more trusting populations.

After 2004 substantial financial means started flowing into the Polish countryside owing to public programs addressed to the rural community. At first, agriculture and farmers were the main recipients of this stream of money. However, since 2007 an ever larger part of the funds has been going to the development of rural areas, which is to be accomplished in accordance with a new model – different than modernization. Besides financial means, an extremely important role is accorded in this model to human, cultural and social resources. Since in the light of various analyses there is a shortage of the latter resources in the rural areas the authoress wonders whether in this situation the substantial economic means which are destined for the rural community and which create opportunities for far-reaching changes, have a chance to be used in an optimal way and enhance the role of the rural community's social capital or whether it is more probable that a part of these means will not be utilized. The empirical basis of the authoress' considerations are the relations between social capital and the Second scheme of the Leader + Program, and the area under her observation is the 'rural' part of the Lódzkie voivodeship.

The article marks an effort to systematically consider the problem of social capital in its aspects connected with social inequalities in access to education. The author is particularly interested in the possibility of explaining the reasons for the worse situation of rural youth in terms of access to education than that of young people from urban areas. He adopts as a staring point for his analysis three basic concepts of the specific character of social capital (as formulated by: Robert Putnam, James Coleman, and Pierre Bourdieu) and tries to determine the probable scope of research relating to the functioning of the educational system in rural areas. He also formulates a number of explanatory hypotheses. In accordance with its title the article has the character of theoretical preliminaries and constitutes a preamble to further investigations concerning the relation between social capital and education in rural areas.

The lack of financial resources needed to solve the everyday problems in Ukrainian local communities actualize the issue of working out new financial mechanisms to enhance financial base for local development. The effectiveness of participatory financing as one of such mechanisms is examined in the paper. Investigation of the impact of the mechanism of participatory financing of the European Union and UNDP “Community based approach to local development” on social and economic development of Ukrainian local communities leads to the conclusion that the method of financing acts as an institution which motivates the local community self-organization, initiative activity and productive cooperation with the authorities. The analysis showed a positive impact of participatory financing both on economic indicators of local community development in the short run and on the characteristics of the communities’ social capital which could be a factor for long term economic development. This conclusion is supported by regional experts. Generally they evaluate the scheme of participatory financing as an effective one. The main value of this model of financing is a synergistic effect (all the participants get result that they could not achieve individually).

The aim of the article is to attempt giving an answer to the question of what the social and civic potential of religious societies, movements and communities consists in. The point of departure is a general characterization of religious organizations and tasks ascribed to them by the Church. They are located in two mutually interpenetrating areas: inside the Church and in the lay reality. Taking into consideration these tasks as well as the perspective determined by understanding and by the tasks of the civil society, five dimensions have been distinguished and analyzed that are connected with the functioning of these organizations in the civil society: a religious character or/and religious inspiration, socially useful activity, a local character, commonness and values, social capital as well as social and civil competences. Analysis of the indicated dimensions reveals a multi-dimensional potential of religious organizations and its basis.

The relationship between social capital and economic development of European regions is investigated. Although relation under consideration appears not deterministic, the results remain in compliance with the theoretical conviction that countries with the high level of social capital are also characterized by the high level of production. Additionally, decision rules suggest the existence of relationship between quality of democracy and institutions and both - social capital and economic development. Variables describing the quality of government appeared in roots of the majority of the decision trees with social capital index as well as GDP.

In this analysis the authors examine the impact of Internet use on the social networks of individuals, and also whether egocentric network characteristics have a measurable effect on the diffusion of Internet use. The empirical bases of this longitudinal analysis are three waves of the World Internet Project carried out between 2001 and 2003.

Socially responsible enterprise can be interpreted in terms of 'social capital', which is defined as connection within and between social networks. These connections, treated as a potential value, are characterized by mutual trust and stressing the importance of cooperation. As a consequence employees learn that cooperation is an effective tool to maximize their own profits (especially in the long term). Mutual trust and cooperation give rise to unformalized, spontaneous exchanges, and these lead to flexibility and innovation. Differentiating organizations by means of the level of social capital is based on the analysis of individuals' tendency to cooperate. The aim of the article is to describe the connection between the practices undertaken in an organization to strengthen cooperative attitudes and their consequences for the national social capital.

The 'LEADER' programme evokes mixed reactions in Poland. Apart from enthusiastic opinions voices can be heard that the programme is too difficult and its implementation ought to be postponed. For some it means an occasion to acquire more funds from the European Union, whereas for others it means a chance for the emergence of a new grass-roots social movement that would complement in an essential way the activities of local governments. The real meaning of the programme for the Polish rural community will become known only in the coming years but the first twelve months of its formal implementation have yielded many suggestions and make it possible to draw some conclusions. The text describes the current and predicted position of the 'LEADER' programme in Europe and contains conclusions and recommendations concerning its implementation in Poland.
