The peculiarity of military criminal proceedings consisted in their approach and regulation concerning formal defense. This approach had been equally peculiar, since in the inter-war period, it was possible to notice a certain level of distrust towards defense lawyers from outside the military circles, and preference for military personnel or lawyers who used to serve in the military. Such approach was also based upon substantive reasons, since criminal cases presented in courts-martial involved not only a degree of professionalism required of all lawyers, but also an understanding of the military structure and relationships. The defense lawyer’s ability to understand those matters benefitted not only the defendant, but also the military judicial service. This, in turn, had constituted the foundation for the emergence of a small group of lawyers and officers of the judicial service—separate from the defense lawyers appearing before the common courts—who would participate in military court proceedings. This function was performed by some of the most eminent defense lawyers of the inter-war period. For the military judiciary, the function of the military defense lawyer constituted a convenient form of practice for the future military judges and prosecutors, which manifested itself in the practice of assigning assistants and legal interns the role of court-appointed attorneys.
The anniversaries of the 1970 Warsaw and the 1990 2+4 Treaties give occasion to revisit the matter of minority protection in German-Polish relations. The interwar system established a problematic unevenness that tainted its acceptance, particularly from the Polish perspective. After 1990 the minority issues achieved an increased, albeit moderate, relevance in German-Polish relations. To some extent the 1991 Polish-German Treaty on Good Neighbourly Relations and Friendly Co-operation retains the unevenness of the inter-war period, as Art. 20(1) recognizes a German minority in Poland, but refuses to acknowledge a Polish minority in Germany. However, currently the thorniest issues concern various situations related to the “Silesians” in Poland, which the Polish government does not recognize as a protected minority under the European Council Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.
The article concerns a legal way of election the President in the Polish legal order between second world war. The April Constitution 1935, which made the head of state the most powerful body, tried to reflect the political orientation of its creators. The Constitution from 1935 was made personally for Józef Piłsudski. The political option, ruling Poland after 1926, had to construct the wise of president election, which would be secure for the this option.
The article presents the role of Zofia Nałkowska in inter-war Polish literary culture. Her activity in the structures of literary life was combined with personal commitment to promotion of young talented authors. While she maintained close bonds with the political elites of the Polish Republic, she also functioned above the ideological divisions, actively supporting authors who were opposed the state. As the only woman she was member of the Polish Academy of Literature. Her participation in the official forms of public life forced her to spend time mostly in male company. At the same time, Nałkowska’s most important relationships, both with women and men, developed in private space.
World War I significantly changed the economic position of the USA when a debtor became a creditor, and a world economic power with increasing industry and an abundance of free capital. It is proved by the fact that the export of American goods to European countries was six times higher than import in 1919–1920. The increase of stronger Czechoslovak-American business relations was limited by the customs system of the Czechoslovak Republic, which was of a strong protectionist character. It was recognisable mainly with the efforts of American traders to increase automobile import to Czechoslovakia. The USA therefore increased pressure on the annulment of the trade agreement between Czechoslovakia and France, which was considered a barrier and discriminatory tool. Despite a long-term effort of the American diplomacy, this discrimination almost paralysed automobile export from the U.S.A to the Czechoslovak Republic.

První světová válka výrazně změnila hospodářské postavení USA, když se z dlužníka stal věřitel a tím i světová ekonomická velmoc s rostoucím průmyslovým dostatkem volného kapitálu.
The article concerns the relationships between terms, frequent in Polish literary criticism, such as “women’s literature”, “women’s press”, “women’s writing”, “literature written by women” and ”Feminist literature”. The author discusses three research books that have been published recently in which slightly different categories have been applied and which, at the same time, focus on the female element of cultural texts. In addition, the author points at multiple tendencies, frequently dissimilar and distinct, in the approach to the relationship between gender and the text. At the same time the author emphasizes a certain disposition manifested by researchers to employ the gender category to judge literary works. Hence, it seems to be quite justified to reopen the Jy women to show them in a new light. The same applies to the surrounding discussions on relevant titles - just as it is the case with publications by Joanna Krajewska, Jerzy Strzelczyk and Kamilla Łozowska-Marcinkowska.
Artykuł stanowi próbę stworzenia zbiorowego portretu chederów oraz pracujących w nich nauczycieli (mełamedów) w okresie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego. Edukacja w chederze stanowiła niezwykle ważny etap na drodze do dorastania żydowskich chłopców, decydujący o dalszych trajektoriach edukacyjnych i zawodowych, przygotowujący do pełnego uczestnictwa we wspólnocie.

The article attempts to create a collective portrait of cheders and teachers working in them (melameds) during the inter-war period. Education in cheders was an extremely important stage of development for Jewish boys. It determined their further educational and professional careers and prepared them for full participation in Jewish communities. These issues are analysed based on the works of historians and diaries using the method of exemplification. The analysis includes autobiographies of young Polish Jews from the inter-war period from the collections of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York. The article also tries to show the process of changes within religious education, the main reasons for attacks at traditional schools and attempts to reform them. The image of cheders conveyed in diaries is part of this critical trend, but it is not homogeneous. Definitely more positive accounts can be found in the diaries of young Jews who attended reformed cheders.

This article is a linguistic description of an official practice – of social and legal nature – held in the inter-war Poland under which the civil servants chose surnames for citizens whose parents remained unknown. Thus, the researched problem area represents an interdisciplinary area between administrative law and language studies (particularly onomastics and sociolinguistics). The authors focus on the semantics of the surnames in question in order to determine the potential preferences on the part of the civil servants as for some particular structural patterns of surname creation. Acting pursuant to the relevant legal acts, the civil servants avoided granting ridiculing or belittling surnames, even though some surnames of their choice did refer to animal onomastics, e.g. Koza [goat], Koziołek [baby goat], Pająk [spider]. Some of the analysed surnames tried to portray the sad circumstances of the life of their bearers, e.g. Zagiński [related to the adjective zaginiony: lost, missing]. Another frequent practice was to use the surname of the legal custodians or other people who happened to take care of an unknown child, even though at times the new name only partly reflected the original surname of the custodian, e.g. Migulski (the custodian’s name was Miguła). Jewish children were granted surnames related to their cultural environment. The predominant suffix used in the surnames under analysis was -ski. The civil servants respected the surname geography, as borne out by the fact that in Eastern provinces of the inter-war Poland they often used names in -owicz//-ewicz, -ko and -uk. The analyses presented in the article helped reveal the fact that the choices made by the inter-war civil servants oscillated between the routine (as in reaching for the names of the legal custodians, referring to onomastic stereotypes as represented by the dominant formative -ski etc.) and the inventiveness (creating alluding names like Jakubowski, Starańska, Borkowski and the like).
The author of the article presents selected issues of testate succession (soundness of mind of the testator, formal requirements of a will and its witnesses, joint and privileged wills, revocation of a will and its invalidation) provided for in the Austrian Civil Code (ABGB) and in force in the part of Poland annexed by Austria. The author’s analysis of the provisions applicable to the issues in question is further enhanced by references to the case-law of courts forming the Lviv judicial district, illustrating the complexity of the provisions. The case-law testifies to how big a role was played by testate succession in the part of Poland annexed by Austria. On the other hand, it shows how many people did not know the ABGB provisions and how differently the provisions were interpreted by the courts.

During inter-war period one of Poland’s neighbouring countries was Latvia (shared border of over 100 km), with which it had relatively close political and economic relations. However, a peculiar role in these relations was played by military cooperation which also had a significant impact on the general relations. To this day, they have not been properly studied, so the aim of this article is to provide a general overview of this cooperation, highlighting its main forms, course and results. Military ties between Latvia and Poland in the inter-war period from 1919 to 1939 were established in many areas (cooperation between the intelligence services, navies and cavalry was particularly good) and were generally far better than political relations. However, they depended largely on political relations, and the latter were of a cautious nature, especially on the Latvian side, which never fully got rid of the suspicion that Poland might make changes in its foreign policy. In view of this, periods when Latvian-Polish relations were in a state of some distrust or even a conflict situation (e.g. in 1931 and 1935) were reflected in military cooperation. However, it must be acknowledged that maintaining mutual military contacts was very beneficial for both sides, although these relations never became as stable as the security considerations of the entire region required. They were particularly profitable for the Latvian side, as they made it possible, for example, for officers to study in the Polish military academies etc.

W okresie międzywojennym jednym z krajów sąsiadujących z Polską była Łotwa (wspólna granica ponad 100 km), z którą łączyły ją stosunkowo ścisłe relacje polityczne i gospodarcze.
The paper aims at presenting a specific historical source, namely notarial annuity provisions typically included in sale agreements, but also used in acts of donation and wills. The analyzed source comes from the inter-war period and concerns a village in the Kujawy and Greater Poland borderland (former Prussian territory). In the first part, the author presents the dynamically developing field of history that is history of the elderly. Then, the determinants of the specific character of the elderly in rural areas are described. The next part discusses the concept of old age established in “magical culture” (or “myth”), which is mainly reconstructed by ethnologists and historians of old age. Afterwards, the determinants of annuities during the Prussian occupation are demonstrated. The inter-war period is analyzed based on sample excerpts from annuity agreements, with interpretation of these documents and the way they were implemented in reality. The paper ends with conclusions and a reference to similar documents still being drafted now.

W artykule szkicuję obraz życia codziennego żydowskich mieszkańców Chełma w 1928 r., wykorzystując informacje zawarte w stałej rubryce Fun Chełm un umgegent (Z Chełma i okolicy), publikowanej na łamach tygodnika „Chełmer Sztyme” (Głos Chełma).

The aim of this article is to outline everyday life of Jewish inhabitants of Chełm in 1928, on the basis of the column “Fun Chełm un umgegent” (From Chełm and Its Neighbourhood) published in the Khelemer Shtime (The Voice of Chełm) weekly. The newspaper was issued between 1924 and 1939, but for the purpose of this paper I have decided to focus on issues from one year exclusively – 1928. This restraint enables to examine magazine’s language and its perspective in the town’s depiction. Additional goal of this paper is to identify the possibility of the use of Yiddish press in developing a monograph, devoted to Jewish inhabitants of Chełm in the inter-war period, in the field of social history.
The development of reportage photography, the activity of photographic agencies and the system of international exchange of photographs, which had been progressing since the early 1920s, as well as the growing technological potential for reproducing photographs in print, brought about a fundamental transformation of the illustrated press. The article discusses these changes, its first part focusing on the interest that their direction aroused among artists associated with the Modernist avant-garde, and on the models for modern methods of using photographs in the popular press championed first by the German weekly “Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung” and then by the French weekly “Vu”. Against this background, the second part of the article describes the process of photographic modernisation of the main Polish weeklies, monthlies and dailies. The third part presents the culmination that this proces found in the montage forms of handling photographic material on the pages of the weeklies of the Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny press concern.

This study was devoted to the investigation of the case of the dissolution of the Kraków City Council in 1924 and the consequences resulting from this decision. After the death of the President of Kraków, Jan Kanty Federowicz, the supervisory authority (i.e. the voivode) decided to dissolve the City Council and appoint a government commissioner and a supervisory board. The commissioner was associated with the central government, while the members of the board mostly represented the ruling coalition. The councilors objected to this decision and appealed it to the Supreme Administrative Tribunal, which ultimately agreed with them. It was found that the voivode had issued the decision for dissolution in breach of the law. The controversial judgment was commented on by lawyers and criticized by those who contended that the Tribunal had errouneously based its decision rely on archaic legislation.
Initiated in the 20s of the twentieth century, the sports movement in police cultural and educational associations in Kalisz and Pabianice, after 1930 developed mainly in police sports clubs. The main reason for the management of the State Police to become interested in sports activities was the possibility of using the acquired skills in the course of performing official duties. Particularly promoted disciplines in the police environment were: shooting, athletics, cycling, marches with a load and police multi-sport. In the years 1926–1929 the State Police Headquarters organized nationwide sports competitions, in which the representation of the Łódź Voivodeship participated. The central struggle was preceded by provincial eliminations, dominated by policemen from the city of Łódź. Sporadically, the fight with them was established by competitors from the district headquarters of the State Police in Kalisz, Brzeziny and Piotrków. The highest place of the representation of the Łódź Voivodeship from the national competition was the third place won in 1926. In other years, the representation of the Łódź Voivodeship was located in the middle of the final table. Police clubs from Łódź, Kalisz and Piotrków competed with local clubs within the district sports associations. The highest level of sport was demonstrated by the multi-section Police Sports Club of Łódź. The most titled was the fencing section with Bolesław Banaś, the master of Poland in foil and épée.

Policyjne kluby z Łodzi, Kalisza i Piotrkowa rywalizowały z lokalnymi klubami w ramach okręgowych związków sportowych. Najwyższy poziom demonstrował wielosekcyjny Policyjny Klub Sportowy z Łodzi. Najbardziej utytułowana była sekcja szermiercza z Bolesławem Banasiem, mistrzem Polski we florecie i szpadzie.
It is a lesser known fact that during the Greater Poland Uprising there were three journals published by different agencies of the Greater Poland Army. This article presents an analysis of the aviation journal “Polska Flota Napowietrzna” [Polish Aerial Fleet], focusing in particular on its illustrative artwork and graphical solutions. Prior to 1919, the whole history of Polish periodicals on aeronautics included only one title of the Warsaw-published “Lotnik i Automobilista” (1911–1914). Likewise, the list of military periodicals published in the Wielkopolska region during the fights for independence is rather short and includes, beside the mentioned periodical, the following journals: “Druh” (1918–1919), “Ku Chwale Ojczyzny” (1919–1920) and “Wiedza Techniczna” (1919–1920) only. “Polska Flota Napowietrzna” was published from July 1919 to June 1921. This article discusses the following issues: frequency of the publication, changes in the title and sub-title of the journal, its price, volume, location of the editor’s office, printing offices, and places of distribution. The periodical was aimed not only at members of the military, but also all interested in modern technology and inventiveness. The most important authors writing for the title are presented as well as the structure and subject area of the periodical. The analysis of the graphic aspects: paper, basic layout, fonts used, journal’s covers, photos and illustrations, as well as typographic ornaments and elements, complements the article.

W artykule zostaną omówione: częstotliwość wydawania pisma, przemiany tytułu i podtytułu, cena, objętość, lokalizacja redakcji, drukarnie i miejsca dystrybucji. Następnie zostaną przedstawieni najważniejsi autorzy „Polskiej Floty Napowietrznej” oraz struktura i tematyka czasopisma. Całość zamyka analiza aspektów graficznych: papieru, podstawowej makiety pisma, używanych czcionek, okładek periodyku, zdjęć i ilustracji oraz ozdobników i szlaków drukarskich.
Tekst pozwala też poznać podstawowe formy i znaczenie działalności KSM w parafiach kurpiowskich.

The author concentrates on the Catholic Youth Association’s activities in the interwar period on the example of the parish of St. Florian in Jednorożec (Przasnysz county), presented against the background of other parishes in Kurpie, located in Płock and Łomża Dioceses. The author outlines the history of the youth affiliates of the Catholic Action after the reform in 1934. Although the affiliates in Jednorożec were much smaller and less active than in central Kurpie, learning their history complements the depiction of the socio-cultural development of Jednorożec village in the inter-war period. The article also allows learning about the basic forms and the importance of the Catholic Youth Association’s activity in Kurpian parishes.
