This study investigates the position, content and pedagogy of Landeskunde in proficiency skills-focussed Dutch foreign language teaching. It analyses the course book used most frequently in Dutch secondary education for German as a foreign language: Neue Kontakte. This research examines the position of cultural content in course materials and in explicitly formulated learning goals. Moreover, it is investigated what cultural content is introduced and whether this is either integrated in language proficiency training and connected to the world of the learners. The results show that Neue Kontakte offers a broad range of cultural topics which are either linked to the Netherlands or Dutch or to the learners’ personal environment. Additionally, Landeskunde is integrated in language proficiency exercises. On the other hand, its status is considered weak; no cultural learning goals are formulated and hardly any repetition of cultural content and little critical reflection on the foreign and the own culture are observed.
The paper deals with homosexuality and the ways it is viewed in society. It focuses on some aspects that accompany homosexual people’s social functioning, such as stereotypes, discrimination, and homophobia. In Poland, as well as in other countries, there exists the problem of discrimination against homosexuals, which results in serious difficulties gay people have to overcome in their everyday life. Since it is mainly from the lack of knowledge that discrimination or homophobia often stem, education might be the key solution. The educational idea this paper puts forward is based on anti-discrimination efforts that promote education through films. The cinematic works chosen for this purpose, Milk, Brokeback Mountain and A Single Man, can help to understand the social aspects of discrimination and homophobia, as well as the psychological consequences suffered by those discriminated against. Still, a screening of films is not sufficient for the accomplishment of this goal; it should be complemented with an after-film discussion that would increase a person’s awareness of differences and various points of view, encouraging them to refresh their own beliefs. Such actions may create an opportunity for the participants and thus result in the change of their attitude.
Using biographical method, the author carries out research on the phenomenon of cultural education in a culturally diverse environment located in the Polish-Lithuanian borderland. In the present article the subject of observation and analyses have become the activities performed/conducted by socio-cultural animators affiliated with Ośrodek “Pogranicze – sztuk, kultur, narodów” in Sejny, who operate among adults. The author investigated a project that has been implemented for several years, which researches the myth of Medea as instrumental in tackling the issue of difficult memory, the latter to be utilised in building good neighbourly relations in multicultural environment.

The starting proposal is the assumption that intercultural dialogue is a product of a diffi cult process of balancing emotions, damping down and curbing negative emotions, learning to progress from reaction to interaction with the Others. Lack of intercultural dialogue can trigger negative emotions towards the Others, eff ectively forming a culture of fear and neoprimitive thinking and awareness. Over the recent years a number of countries have been focused on saving the economic, banking, and the military systems, overlooking the decline in active citizenship and the destruction of belief in democracy, in the feeling of European and global solidarity, in the common good creating dialogue and peace. The societies of today have set in motion the mechanism of isolation and separation, as well as an excessive openness and liberalism with the principles of political correctness and relativism. This raises the questions about the role of culture education. Are there absolute values? Can they be identifi ed and developed? Is the intercultural education of today capable of realising them as permanent and universal values? The conclusions show that in this day and age, in multicultural societies, we should be prepared not only to acknowledge and tolerate diff erences, both defi ned and traditional, but also to acknowledge and understand new, changeable, dynamic hybrid identities. I believe that intercultural education has triggered a new model of interaction, acknowledging the man, his position in time and space. It defi ned an interactive paradigm in human development, diagnosing and projecting social change in the learning process.
