Since 2021, Poland has emerged as a focal point in European asylum policy. Initially, Poland sealed its border with Belarus to stop unauthorized migration and sought EU support against the Lukashenko regime’s “hybrid attack”. Conversely, Poland opened its doors to millions seeking refuge from the conflict in Ukraine. These contrasting stances are mirrored in EU actions, including a proposed “Instrumentalisation Regulation” to manage the refugee flow from Belarus on the one hand, and the activation of the “Temporary Protection Directive” for Ukrainian refugees on the other hand. This paper aims to dissect the roots and impacts of Poland’s divergent policies through a combined political and legal examination at both national and EU levels. It demonstrates the key dynamics at play between the EU, Poland, and its neighbouring states that led to the differential treatment of forced migrants at the borders. The analysis shows that the logic behind both situations is uniform and relies on an insider-outsider framing that is present in both cases. The difference in result stems from the line being drawn, similar to the Curzon line, at political alliances or opposition with Ukraine and Belarus, respectively, and the absence of humanitarian considerations regarding the migrants at the Belarusian border.

Pierre Bourdieu’s social scientific concepts and theories are very popular among social scientists today. However, his early writings based on fieldwork in Algeria are far less well known, despite the fact that in was in these texts that his famous concepts and theories originated. This article sets out to examine the mutual relationship between Bourdieu and the Kabyle people from several perspectives. The author focuses on Bourdieu’s relationship to the fieldwork, his relations with Kabyle intellectuals, and at the role they played as his key informants and ‘experts’ on Kabyle culture. The article investigates to what extent and how in France Bourdieu defended the academic activities of the Kabyle people relating to their own culture. It also studies Bourdieu’s opinion on the Kabyle people’s emancipation efforts within independent Algeria. Finally, it looks at how familiar the Kabyle people are today with Bourdieu’s work on their society and culture and how his body of work is interpreted, taught at universities and used as a tool in the formation process of Kabyle collective identity. The article is based on a study of primary and secondary sources: Bourdieu’s scholarly writings, media interviews, his speeches at ceremonies, and his correspondence, and it draws on published interviews with Bourdieu’s friends and colleagues. The author also used her own fieldwork in Algeria as an auxiliary source of data.

The article concerns judicial integrity in its basic meaning, i.e. as the consistency of actions with beliefs. Firstly, a reconstruction of the role of a judge’s beliefs was undertaken on the basis of the philosophy law, which allowed for proving that at least on the grounds of the so-called third path theory, they are treated as essential. However, acknowledging their role raises questions about the danger of instrumentalising law by the judge and of instrumentalising the judge by the law. Ronald Dworkin’s philosophy which extensively refers to the concept of integrity was interpreted as a solution to the issue. Then, it was noted that this approach is too narrow, as it limits the possibility of including the judge’s beliefs in adjudication only when they meet the requirements of so-called appropriateness tests, and are therefore already included in the content of the legal order in some way. Furthermore, integrity in this sense does not cover the judge’s behaviours besides decision-making, the status of which increasingly requires a theoretical explanation and normative classification. In consequence, it was stated that the concept of integrity is connected with paradoxes. In spite of that, an attempt was made to design a more systematic approach to judicial integrity in adjudication and behaviour, which would lead to proving that it is something that should be cared about, and consequently, its behaviour should be made the object of normative and institutional solutions. At the same time, the concept of integrity seems to have more heuristic power than normative one.

The article considers the ethical aspects of human cloning. It presents the most important arguments against human cloning which can be found in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Never Let Me Go. Author of the article examines the issue of human cloning as presented in the arguments from instrumentalisation and the internal life of clones and from limiting the freedom of the individual and making him/her unhappy. Then author considers an argument that appeals to the right of a person to be a unique individual, and an argument that appeals to the idea that a person has the right to an open future. Later, the author tries to analyze other arguments such as: psychological distress and the desintegration of personal identity. The author also considers the argument from the natural right to family relationships, and reformulates argument from the wisdom of repugnance. In her interpretation this argument becomes an argument from the wisdom of compassion.

The article traces Polish electoral law (1918–2023) as a tension between democratisation and instrumentalisation. It argues electoral law is not mere voting technique: it shapes effective universality, equality of opportunity, representation, and trust in outcomes. In the Second Republic, proportionality fostered pluralism but also fragmentation and unstable cabinets; after 1926 the decisive stage shifted to candidate nomination. Under communist rule elections became plebiscitary, while after 1989 reforms sought balance between representativeness and governability. From 2015 onward disputes concerned electoral management, state resources, media, and new informational and organisational inequalities. The article highlights rule stability, the Venice Commission’s electoral-quiet-period standard, and the cumulative effects of frequent amendments in law and administrative practice and sketches a minimal agenda for rebuilding electoral trust. The research perspective combines dogmatic analysis with a legal-historical approach and reference to international standards of electoral law stability developed in Europe.
