Although Halina Rząsa (1924–1980) was a photographer of considerable reputation in Zakopane, we are able to say next to nothing about her life and work. She is mostly remembered and mentioned as the wife and mother of two famous sculptors: Antoni Rząsa (1919–1980) and Marcin Rząsa (born 1965). The article looks at the history of the Zakopane artistic circles in order to reconstruct in detail the biography of this underappreciated artist. The author uses information and photographic material from a private family archive deposited in the Antoni Rząsa Gallery in Zakopane. Halina Rząsa moved to Zakopane in the 1950s. Along with her first husband, Janusz Vogel, she worked with landscape and documentary photography, concentrating-among others-on the local artistic life. One of her main subjects was a well-known Zakopane sculptor, Antoni Rząsa. The two soon fell in love, had a son, and got married. Halina Rząsa’s subsequent photography reflected the daily life of her family, region, and the Tatra mountains. Today, it is a perfect source of data for an analysis of Antoni Rząsa’s oeuvre. At the same time, it is essential to understand that Halina Rząsa was a creative and innovative artist in her own right and deserves to be remembered and appreciated as such.

This article is an analysis of one area of Piotr Piotrowski’s (1952–2015) activity in the 1990s – his writings on the art of Zofia Kulik and, more specifically, on its feminist dimension. I argue that although Piotrowski was never interested in women’s art in particular, not only did he practise feminist criticism during this period, but he was also a catalyst for the development of a specific form of feminist reflection that was then new in Polish art history. It focused on power relations and did not accept distancing oneself from social and political problems. I analyse it from the perspective of contemporary revisions of the development of feminist discourse after 1989 in Eastern Europe, which critically examines its embeddedness in Western ideas.

In Mexico, primarily during the 19th century, production of embroidery designs was a popular activity among young girls. Objects which reflected reproducibility of some of the ornaments and methods of creation, became patterns demonstrating types of embroidery techniques. They have been subject of numerous studies, especially in historical, ethnographic, archaeological or restoration-related contexts. This allowed for distinguishing the main concepts that led to devising schemes which designated a former approach to the subject. This article reviews various research concepts that have shaped reflection on embroidery patterns in Mexico, including foreign studies. It also proposes an art history approach, allowing for new findings and possibilities for analysing those objects being elements of material culture. Women who dealt with development of patterns may be seen as artists, the masters of their profession, whose virtuosity was manifested in the class of the objects themselves as a result of devoted time and extraordinary manual skill.

The main aim of the article is to interpret artistic works associated with the weaving medium or fiber art, which show close relations with the text. Word, slogans, sayings, documents, letters, manifestos permeate into textiles, affect the formal aspect, but at the same time clearly strengthen the message itself. Works by Polish female artists represent various techniques, from traditional embroidery and tapestries made of natural yarn, to objects woven with synthetic fiber, often recycled. These works also represent various trends, from (auto)biographical stories related to (non)memory, to social, political, ecological, integrative, collective actions. Thus, they are an interesting alternative to traditional sources used in the didactic methods, because TEXTiles are an exceptionally extensive book, from which you can read a lot.

The article argues that the role of women artists is not fully acknowledged in the history of Surrealism. Works of women artists, located outside the canon, are overshadowed by the most prominent avant-garde works created by men. However, such Surrealist women artists as Leonora Carrington, Gisèle Prassinos, Dorothea Tanning, and Meret Oppenheim had a huge influence on contemporary art and literature. Surrealist women writers and visual artists create a different and extremely original world in their works, especially when judged against the background of canonical works. One example is Gisèle Prassinos’s novel Le visage effleuré de peine [Face touched by sadness]. It tells the story of a young woman married to a scientist who relies on artificial intelligence in his daily life. The novel, although humorous, presents the woman as a strong, independent, and empathetic character, challenging the Surrealist visions of femme fatale. The article also attempts to show how Surrealist women writers influenced/still influence contemporary Polish literature.

Confronting the second wave of feminism with postfeminism allows us to show the change in the perception of art and the position of women in the art world. The activists of the 1970s aroused extreme emotions in the public, and attempts were made to downplay the value of their work. At the end of the 20th century, however, when ambiguity and controversy have become the desired quality of art, feminist ideas are sometimes a necessary ornament of the careers of celebrities. In this article I present the history of the difficulties that artists who debuted on the art scene in the 1970s had to overcome. I use the example of Judy Chicago and her iconic work Dinner Party. Other heroines of the pioneering times are Marina Abramowic, Carolee Schneemann, and Valie Export, whose attitude I compare to that of the star of the younger generation, Vanessa Beecroft. Beecroft leaves her attractive installations without any comment, she does not settle any controversies, which fits the characteristics of the post-modern game on the art market.

Konfrontacja drugiej fali feminizmu z postfeminizmem pozwala ukazać zmianę w percepcji sztuki i pozycji kobiet w świecie sztuki.

Urodzona w Lublinie, w latach 1930–1936 Schor studiowała malarstwo w Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie. W 1938 r. wyemigrowała do Paryża, skąd musiała wraz z mężem Ilyą Schorem uciekać po wybuchu wojny. W 1941 r. Schorowie osiedlili się w Nowym Jorku. Dopiero w ostatnich dekadach życia zaczęła tworzyć prace w bezpośredni sposób dotykające tematów politycznych – były to rzeźby w technice mieszanej o wojnach minionych i obecnych.

The article presents an analysis of a hitherto unresearched group of works by the Polish-Jewish artist Resia Schor (1910–2006) dating from the period 1979–1990. Born in Lublin, Schor studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1930 to 1936. In 1938 she emigrated to Paris, from where she and her husband Ilya Schor were forced to escape after the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1941 the Schors settled in New York. It was only in the last decades of her life that Schor began to produce artworks that directly touched upon political topics; those were mixed-media sculptures commenting on wars past and present. By engaging the Benjaminian concept of memory, these works linked the artist’s past – her personal experience of war and loss – with her reaction to contemporary acts of violence.
