The research which is described in the article aimed to help the social enterprise — SIFE Salford in creating a portfolio of projects. The paper focuses on a selection method that the organization may use while choosing among the projects submitted by external enterprises. This process is very complex and it is often difficult to make sound decisions, therefore introducing the methods and the process is essential and beneficial for every organization. The author examines two methods: the scoring and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). An analysis of those methods is made to decide which one is more suitable and useful for the organization under study. Furthermore, the methods are analyzed and studied as to how they can be applied and used in social enterprises. The survey and interviews with experts from the field aim to create guidelines for SIFE Salford, how to use the techniques and benefit from them. Consequently, the President and Directors of the enterprise are trained during the interview process to use the studied methods so that they can be easily implemented in the upcoming academic year. This condenses the aim of the research, which is to experiment among the selection methods that could be a practical tool for a social enterprise to ease the process of selection. It also introduces the concept of project portfolio management within this sector.

The social economy, emphasising social impact, community ownership, and ethical practices, presents a potentially transformative framework for developing art and creative industries.Aim: This research aims to identify the key opportunities the social economy environment offers for the development of art and creative industries. It is also an attempt to analyse the significant challenges that art and creative industries face when operating within the social economy framework.Materials and methods: The study is theoretical and qualitative. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, with literature review as a foundation. A comprehensive review of existing literature on the social economy, art and creative industries, and their intersection is conducted to establish a theoretical framework. Results: In the last three decades, the sphere of culture in Poland has experienced many changes: first of all, artistic freedom has increased, and in addition to public cultural institutions, non-governmental organisations and private entities have entered the arena. The arts and creative industries have begun to benefit from technological advancements and digitalisation. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the potential of the social economy to nurture and empower art and creative industries, fostering a more equitable and sustainable creative ecosystem.

Social enterprises perceive social and environmental issues as primary objectives of their hybrid socio-economic activities. They believe that financial stability is a prerequisite, not a goal. This approach is similar to Catholic social teaching (CST). The detailed content of the social encyclicals is a valuable means of deeper exploration and enrichment of the moral dimension of social enterprise management. The following article analyses social entrepreneurship from the point of view of the fundamental principles of CST and theological premises. The reference to the management of a social enterprise of the supreme personalistic standard and principles such as the common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity allows the moral dimension of this process to be understood more deeply. The paper was created based on a method appropriate to research focused on moral theology and CST. First, the content of selected literature on the subject (social entrepreneurship) and carefully selected theological-moral sources (especially papal documents and publications by CST researchers) were analysed. Subsequently, the results of the analysis were subjected to inference and conceptual work in relation to the adopted general research objective and specific research tasks: the phenomenon of social enterprises was described; the specific features and limitations of the social enterprise management process were identified; the fundamental principles of Catholic social teaching as normative criteria for social enterprise management were reviewed; the possibility of applying the aforementioned CST principles to social enterprise practice was discussed and presented, and the final conclusions were formulated.

On the basis of the lack of measurement tools and the research gap regarding social entrepreneurship, three studies were conducted to develop a new measure of social enterprise (SE) performance that is empirically valid and easy to administer. The purpose of this measure was to examine the relationship between entrepreneurs’ personality traits and their perceived SE performance. The results indicated that SE performance can be assessed using four dimensions: personal issues, social aspects, business elements, and service programmes. Extraversion positively influenced service programmes, and openness negatively affected service programmes. Neuroticism and conscientiousness positively predicted personal issues and service programmes, and agreeableness positively predicted all dimensions of perceived SE performance. The results also demonstrated the curvilinear relationship of the U-shaped curve between neuroticism and personal issues and the social aspects of SE performance. Furthermore, the results showed the curvilinear relationship of the inverted U-shaped curve between agreeableness and the four dimensions of SE performance.

ABOUT A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE...

EN
A social enterprise is an innovative phenomenon in which every day entrepreneurial problems are solved by an entrepreneurial initiative of cooperating individuals. Espe-cially in regions with large social and human capital, among communities with high trust, sensitivity and a sense of common social purpose in business, people discover that together we can do more, especially in our small homelands that constitute the microcosm of economic life. The aim of the article is to show that in the era of rapid technological progress, social innovations are a boundary condition for the survival of not only social enterprises, but also commercial ones, which to a smaller or larger extent also realize or can achieve social goals.

This publication aims to identify similarities and differences in the ways of implementing the principle of the common good in classical (commercial) and social enterprises. Given the differences between social and classical enterprises in terms of their objectives and modes of action, it has to be stressed that the nature of the contribution they make to the common good differs in terms of subject and object. The research is embedded in Catholic social teaching (CST) because this approach presents one of the theoretically and practically richest theories of the common good, and secondly, it allows to discover modern ways of building the common good while respecting centuries of tradition and referring to philosophical classics. The common good principle in the light of CST lets us focus not only on the material but also the transcendental aims of human work and life which lead to more sustainable management. Commercial enterprises strengthen intellectual capital and expand technological and business knowledge. The profit earned by these companies essentially contributes to the good of society (taxes, investment, charity), including employees (bonuses, training). Social enterprises, on the other hand, have the advantage of investing in social capital and thus building a civil society based on mutual trust and support, especially at a local and institutional level. The profit generated by these organisations is a means to achieve social goals and not an end in itself. The results of our research show that both commercial and social enterprises contribute to common good on their own ways but the best results can be achieved when they cooperate and use all of their strengths for building the better future.

Social entrepreneurs, regardless the geographical context or legal form of their enterprises blend commercial market logic and social good logic. We argue that the concept entrepreneurial mindset plays a key role in understanding how blending conflicting logics management activities of social entrepreneurs occurs. This paper aims to identify the role of particular entrepreneurial mindset attributes in enabling social entrepreneurs to successfully act simultaneously in social and market contexts. Through pursuing interpretative phenomenological research with seven social entrepreneurs from five different countries, we have identified three different schemes of blending social and commercial logics. Our findings have also identified the intensity of particular EM attributes among the three groups of entrepreneurs. The main contribution of this paper in bringing together two entrepreneurship streams of research to advance our understanding on how social entrepreneurs blend competing institutional logics.

The aim of the article is to demonstrate that economic, technological and social changes, also thanks to the principle of sustainable development, lead to the transformation of existing and the emergence of new hybrid forms of conducting business activity. On one hand, there is a noticeable expansion of social economy mechanisms that reflect an ‘economic’ approach to providing broadly defined goods and services in the public interest, and there is also resurgence of democratic member-based organizations (DMOs), such as cooperatives with their dual nature and social and economic dimensions. On the other hand, traditional forms of for-profit business are transforming into entities that integrate social and environmental goals into business, known as Sustainability-Driven Hybrid Business Models (SHBMs), and of which benefit corporations (like U.S. Benefit Corporation or Social Purpose Corporation, Italian Societ. Benefit or French Soci.t. . mission) are an example. The transformation and emergence of these qualitatively new organizations is an illustration of the process of creative destruction described by Joseph Schumpeter. The article presents advantages and disadvantages associated with the benefit corporations. The analysis is concluded with the open question of whether legislative intervention is needed in this area, in particular whether it would be expedient to introduce ‘mission companies’ in Poland.

Under the conditions of a free-market economy, the creation of economic inequalities is a natural phenomenon, but it is undesirable. Therefore, actions are needed that are effective in minimizing the existing social disparities. The state’s activities in this area are limited and are essentially limited to the redistribution of part of its income in the form of social assistance or social programs, but this does not solve the problem of social inequality. In this situation it is necessary to use instruments that can trigger a mechanism to reduce economic inequalities through social activity. The social economy could become such a solution. The aim of the article is to assess the impact of using the social economy to reduce economic inequalities. The analysis concerns the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. To achieve the assumed goal, the article uses the methods of cause-and-effect analysis, critical literature analysis, non-participating observation and case study analysis. The considerations indicate that the use of the opportunities offered by the social economy may reduce the economic disparities. The implementation of this concept in the practice of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship led to the following conclusions: • institutions for reintegrating institutions – satisfactory, • social enterprises that act as an instrument to reduce economic inequalities – insufficient. Therefore a number of actions have been proposed to improve this situation.
