The article explores the thematization of proper names (anthroponyms, chrematonyms and toponyms, includings street names) in Czech travelogues describing Soviet Russia (and later the Soviet Union). The material for the study comprised 40 travelogues published in book form and relating to the period 1917–1956. The aim of the article is to demonstrate how proper names function in this type of travelogue as a means of reflecting and promoting Soviet society, its values and ideology. The article also explores how proper names – particularly name changes in response to historical developments – were presented and commented on by the authors of pre- and post- World War II travelogues. Predominantly up to 1945, naming practices under the Bolshevik regime (name changes, new personal and geographical names, the practice of giving ‘revolutionary’ names to children) were viewed as part of the creation of a new Soviet reality and a new society, and the authors emphasized the ideological value and propaganda function of proper names.

The 20th century ideologies, together with the transformations of the constitutional and social orders of the Central Europe, count among the major topics of contemporary Czech prose. The concept of collective memory, that preserves these elements of the past, is being uncovered both on the material and non-material planes. One of the ways of its representation in literary works is the use of toponyms of predominantly commemorative character. Therefore, in a fictional world, the names of places become an essential motif reflecting the ideological influence of the political power of the time. The paper focuses on the place names the contemporary prose works contain and on the way they are involved in constructing a literary picture of the history of the 20th century. Attention is paid to the artistic representation of the ideologically motivated changes of toponyms and non-standardized toponymy as an element of identity or humor defying political power; furthermore, the particularities of linguistically diverse areas, especially in relation to German and Polish language, are considered. From the methodological point of view, the study is based, besides others, on the concept of abused memory (abus de mémoire) by the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur, which is clearly evident in the literary motif of the ideological transformations of toponyms.

The article focuses on the subject of classification of commemorative place names. The main purpose of the research is to show the relation between the motivation for the place name and its linguistic form, i.e. the toponymic models and particular formants used to create a place name. The specificity of commemorative place names is illustrated on the one hand through the use of traditional toponymic models and formants and on the other hand through their motivation. Not only personal names, but also place names and chrematonyms appear in the bases of commemorative place names. This issue is illustrated using Czech place names and their development in the context of the Central European countries and the Soviet Union (and later, the Russian Federation) during the 20th century.

The aim of the paper is to describe specific trends in the development of Prague street names following the end of the Second World War. The main purpose of the research is to show all topics, which arose in post-war society and which also influenced post-war street naming (e. g. eliminating symbols of Nazi Germany, celebrating of our west and east rescuers, laudation of dead heroes, turnover to hussite tradition, turnover to interwar Czechoslovakia etc.). The paper also shows examples of ideological and political influences on street naming after 1948.

The urbanonymy of new socialist cities and housing estates built in Central Europe after the Second World War represents a specific type of typonymic system whose defining characteristic is their honorific function. It is therefore understandable that many of these names were changed after the fall of communism. The article provides arguments supporting the preservation of the original urbanonyms, despite their ideologically motivated origins. The author also focuses on the role of toponyms as elements contributing to local identity and attempts to define their value as a part of cultural heritage.
