The aim of the article is to compare the information efficiency of the financial markets in selected European Union countries. The author investigates how these markets react to the National Bank announcement about the decision to change or not to change the level of the reference rate, according to the assumption of the efficient market hypothesis. In the presented research, the methods of event tests was used.

In this paper an attempt was made to clarify the reasons of price movements on financial markets in the conditions of decision-makers bounded rationality. The emphasis of rationality of individuals, which is limited by information they have and the cognitive limitations of their minds, allowed to discuss the hypothesis of efficient markets and an assumption of their rational expectations. As a results of these considerations a model of financial markets was formulated in which an investor could choose different investment strategies and decide to change originally chosen ones as a consequence of their bounded rationality.

An attempt was made to verify the impact of employee stock options (ESO) on the financial situation of companies and the effects observed in the changes of the stock price. The research consisted of a comparative analysis of the conditions of banks that implemented ESOs and those that did not. Subsequent analysis covered a wider group of companies from different branches of the economy that implemented motivational schemes, according to the effects the options had on their situation. Based on the conclusions of these analyses, another research project based on the MS-GARCH models was made for the stock price time series to verify the efficient market hypothesis according to the implementation and exercise of the ESOs.

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the logical relationship between the prevalence of specific macroeconomic theories and the ethical quality of practices that take place in the financial markets. The main thesis presented herein is that viewing the financial markets through an appropriate economic framework is a crucial prerequisite of maintaining their ethical foundations and harnessing their ethical potential. Three competing macroeconomic visions – the “animal spirits” theory, the efficient market hypothesis, and the causal-realist market process approach – are assessed with respect to their logically deducible effects on the ethical thinking of financial operators. The main conclusion of the paper is that the causal-realist approach provides the most satisfactory account of the inherent conceptual nature of financial markets, thereby furnishing the best guidance for the development of appropriate professional virtues by their key members.

This research study examines the behavior of currency rate, long memory features, and long-term stability in the returns of thirteen Asia-Pacific currencies (AUD, CNY, HKD, INR, IDR, JPY, KRW, MYR, NZD, PHP, SGD, TWD, and THB) against USD over a period of fourteen years (from 2nd January 2001 to 10th December 2014). The study uses descriptive statistics, ADF and PP test, Hurst exponent co-integration model, and figures to investigate the normality, stationarity, long memory features, and long-term relationship stability of sample currencies against USD. This study determined the values of the Hurst Exponent for the first window with 1,000 observations and the second window with 2,500 observations. This study provides significant evidence for the presence of long memory features and relationship stability. The findings of this study would help investors, exchange rate trade policy makers, exporters, and importers to make decisions on the investment, export, and import of goods and services.

The paper deals with the problem of the discrepancy between fundamental values of shares in the stock market and their market prices. In particular it discusses the problem of the excessive volatility of stock prices compared with changes in their fundamental value determined as the present value of dividends paid by the company. The results of research on this issue for the US market initiated and popularized by Robert Shiller provided strong arguments against the hypothesis of capital market efficiency stating that stock prices immediately account for any new information affecting the fundamental value of assets. This problem has been studied neither for the Polish stock market nor for other post-communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe. The paper presents preliminary results of research into these stock markets.

Research background: Covid-19 has affected the global economy and has had an inevitable impact on capital markets. In the week of February 24-28, 2020, stock markets crashed. The index FTSE 100 decreased 13%, while the indices DJIA and S&P 500 fell 11-12%, the biggest drop since the 2007-2008 financial and economic crisis. It is therefore of interest to test the random walk hypothesis in developed capital markets, European and also non-European, in order to understand the different predictabilities between them. Purpose of the article: The aim is to analyze capital market efficiency, in its weak form, through the stock market indices of Belgium (index BEL 20), France (index CAC 40), Germany (index DAX 30), USA (index DOW JONES), Greece (index FTSE Athex 20), Spain (index IBEX 35), Ireland (index ISEQ), Portugal (index PSI 20) and China (index SSE) for the period from December 2019 to May 2020. Methods: Panel unit root tests of Breitung (2000), Levin et al. (2002) and Hadri (2002) were used to assess the time series stationarity. The test of Clemente et al. (1998) is used to detect structural breaks. The tests for the random walk hypothesis follows the variance ratio methodology proposed by Lo and MacKinlay (1988). Findings & Value added: In general, we found mixed confirmation about the EMH (efficient market hypothesis). Taking into account the conclusions of the rank variance test, the random walk hypothesis was rejected in the case of stock indices: Dow Jones, SSE and PSI 20, partially rejected in the case indices: BEL 20, CAC 40, FTSTE Athex 20 and DEX 30, but accepted for indices: IBEX 35 and ISEQ. The results also show that prices do not fully reflect the information available and that changes in prices are not independent and identically distributed. This situation has consequences for investors, since some returns can be expected, creating opportunities for arbitrage and for abnormal returns, contrary to the assumptions of random walk and information efficiency.

This study employs robust martingale diefrence hypothe sis tests to examine return predictability in a broad sample of the 40 most capitalized cryptocurrency markets in the context of the adaptive market hypothesis. The tests were applied to daily returns using the rolling window method in the research period from May 1, 2013 to September 30, 2022. The results of this study suggest that the returns of the majority of the examined cryptocurrencies were unpredictable most of the time. However, a great part of them also suefred some short periods of weak-form ineficien cy. The results obtained validate the adaptive market hy pothesis. Additionally, this study allowed the observation of some diefrences in return predictability between the examined cryptocurrencies. Also some historical trends in weak-form eficiency were identifed. The results suggest that the predictability of cryptocurrency returns might have decreased in recent years also no significant relation ship between market cap and predictability was observed. According to the Efficient Market Hypothesis, investors cannot achieve above-average returns by using technical analysis tools. This paper attempts to answer the question as to what makes technical analysis popular, regardless of the efficiency of capital markets. The objective is to verify whether investors have certain cognitive inclinations that make them more likely to believe in the efficiency of technical analysis models. We postulate a positive relationship between different forms of overconfidence and faith in the effectiveness of technical analysis methods. This relationship was confirmed only in the case of the “better than average” effect. The two other examined forms of overconfidence, namely, overprecision and illusion of control, did not yield statistically significant results. However, the lack of confirmation by all three forms of overconfidence is in line with the results presented in the literature, namely, that there are no significant relationships between different forms of overconfidence.

The article describes the issue of capital asset pricing using Capital Assets Pricing Models (CAPM). The theoretical section presents the assumptions, zero-beta portfolio modification and results of using CAPM. The empirical part focuses on studies of the effectiveness of the CAPM model. Empirical tests are given, providing evidence that both denies and confirms the findings of the CAPM model, while the correlation coefficient is used to verify the model on the Polish capital market. The zero-beta portfolio was created based on futures contracts on WIG20 and units of the Multi Units Luxembourg Lyxor. As indicated by the results, this portfolio may be an appropriate method for estimating the risk-free interest rate. Research on the effectiveness of the valuation was carried out on the basis of two companies: KGHM Polska Miedź SA and Próchnik SA. The results of the study show that in most cases the variability of the companies’ returns is greater than that resulting from the CAPM model.

This paper presents  the problem concerning  market timing. The aim of the study was to consider the impact of the skills of managers in terms of market timing and the proper selection of assets in the investment portfolio. The study used the Henriksson-Merton model to determine whether the portfolio manager have selected FIO (open-end investment funds) skills in terms of selectivity and market timing and achievements in above-average rates of return. After testing models for the three surveyed funds, there have been confirmed hypothesis that portfolio managers of selected FIO do not have the skills both in terms of market timing and selectivity. The article presents the market efficiency hypothesis and the associated theory of market timing, which is more often touched upon in foreign publications than in Polish ones.

W artykule przedstawiono problem dotyczący wyczucia rynku.

Hipoteza rynku adaptacyjnego (adaptive market hypothesis – AMH), której autorem jest A. Lo, to jeden z najnowszych modeli opisujących działanie rynków finansowych.

The article presents a model describing the operation of financial markets – the adaptive market hypothesis (AMH), created by Andrew Lo. AMH builds on the theory of efficient market hypothesis (EMH), which allows one to connect EMH with conclusions from behavioral finance. The study examines the conclusions of AMH about the existence of the unstable relationship between return and risk, and the time-dependent efficiency of investment strategies. The conclusions’ verification is based on the example of KGHM Polska Miedź SA, the WIG index and the DAX index. The first conclusion was tested by using the capital asset pricing model, while the second conclusion was verified using an investment strategy based on the “January effect”. As the results show, both applications proved correct.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to answer the question whether weak-form informational efficiency of the world’s stock markets tended to change over a long term. Methodology: A proxy of weak-form informational efficiency applied in the study is based on Bachelier’s random walk model. The research hypothesis states that over a long term weak-form informational efficiency of the world’s stock markets, proxied by a percentage of the null hypotheses which could not be rejected in the normality tests of the indexes returns, tended to improve. The research sample includes 77 all-share indexes from all over the world and the analysed time-series of their returns cover the period from 02/01/2013 to 28/02/2020. Findings: The conducted study allows for rejecting the stated research hypothesis as the changes of the efficiency turned out to be region-dependent. A long-term trend of the efficiency measure, calculated for all the indexes together, was flat, with a zero slope and the volatility of this measure was low. Hence, it suggests that when taking into account all the indexes examined, on a long-term basis, the world’s stock markets’ weak-form informational efficiency did not display neither any downward nor upward tendency. Research limitations: Future issue-related research can test weak-form informational efficiency under less strict conditions than these proposed by Bachelier. Value: As opposed to many other studies, which usually try to answer the question if the markets are efficient or not, this paper focuses its attention on the changes in efficiency over the years. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to examine whether the outstandingly high values of the market value ratios co-occurring with low levels of weak-form informational efficiency proxied by the percentage of the stock returns normality tests in which the null hypothesis could not be rejected. Methodology: The weak-form informational efficiency measure used in the study is based on the strict random walk model proposed by Bachelier. The data collected covered the period from 31/12/2016 to 23/03/2020 and contained financial data of the companies listed on both stock markets of the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE), i.e. on the Main Market and NewConnect. The empirical study consisted in comparing the average market value ratios and the market efficiency measures calculated for both the WSE sectors and subsectors. Findings: The analysis of the scatterplots as well as the analysis of the correlation coefficients suggest that the outstandingly high values of the market value ratios do not co-occur with low levels of weakform informational efficiency. Thus, the outstandingly high values of the market value ratios cannot be treated as any clear indication of market inefficiency. Research limitations: The authors encourage other researchers to test weak-form informational efficiency under more general conditions and repeat the study for other datasets.

The purpose of this paper is to review the state of research about calendar effects as an example of biases in the efficient market hypothesis carried out in the era of pandemic and post-pandemic economic reality (2020–2023). Based on the method of reviewing and critical analysis of the literature, a summary of the previous state of research on the issue of calendar effects conducted in 2020–2023 was prepared. Drawing on research results coming from different corners of the world, it is still possible to recognize the occurrence of calendar anomalies in the vast majority of them in accordance with their previous correlations. As can be seen, the increase in uncertainty has not led to the disappearance of the occurrence of the majority of calendar anomalies. Reviewing the state of research, a certain research gap was also noticed, which concerns the failure to address the topic of calendar effects in the era of post-pandemic economic reality, accompanied by Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.

Niniejsze badanie proponuje nowe podejście do szacowania efektywności informacyjnej rynku w formie słabej. Ponadto dostarcza regulatorom i innym uczestnikom rynku cennych informacji dotyczących zmian efektywności GPW w czasach pandemii COVID-19 oraz jej długoterminowych trendów.

The aim of this paper is to verify whether the COVID-19 outbreak negatively affected the weak-form informational efficiency of the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE). Applying a wild bootstrapped automatic variance ratio test and the rolling window methodology, we verify the martingale hypothesis for daily returns of 437 stocks listed on the Main Market of the WSE i n a research period beginning on January 2nd, 2015 and ending on August 31st, 2020. The percentage of cases in which the martingale hypothesis cannot be rejected is our proxy for the weak-form informational efficiency that we come up with. Despite the rapid and significant price movements, as well as the rise of returns volatility (and thus a likely herd behavior of the market participants), the results obtained do not allow for stating unambiguously that the COVID-19 outbreak negatively affected the weak-form informational efficiency of the WSE. The results turned out to be sector-dependent. Future issue-related studies can apply other proxies of efficiency levels as a unique proxy applied in this study is based only on a wild bootstrapped automatic variance ratio test. The issue-related studies should be also continued as the pandemic is still an ongoing issue. This study comes up with a novel approach to approximating the weak-form informational efficiency, provides regulators, as well as other market participants with valuable information on the WSE efficiency changes in the COVID-19 pandemic times and even its long-term trends.
