The study was taken the issue of importance of higher education in research and development in selected countries. The aim was to identify models of universities in R&D in the world economy and try to assess their effectiveness in the context of contemporary challenges. The study allowed the identification of four models. It has been shown that the most effective model is the model I (based on the business) which is characterized by high expenditures on R&D (relative to GDP) and the implementation of R&D by universities to a maximum over a dozen percent. It promotes the realisation of applied research and experimental development by universities and the involvement of business in the higher eduction R&D and in effect gives rise to the functioning of the universities in system of the triple helix.

Research and development activity of the contemporary enterprises is characterized by two processes: dynamic development of the R&D internationalization process and open innovation model of performing innovations. In this article the Author takes on an attempt to identify the relations and interactions between these phenomena. The performed analyses shows that implementation of the open innovation by multinationals is the factor which stimulates the R&D internationalization process because of the possibility of obtaining external sources of innovations from global economy. Realizing the open innovation model, corporations internationalize the R&D by both locating their R&D units abroad and engaging in international research cooperation. In view of this, the internationalization of business R&D becomes the evident sequence of open innovation. On the other hand, the process of internationalization of the R&D may not stimulate open innovation. The asymmetry in knowledge and technology transfers caused by the orientation of the R&D units towards absorption of external sources creates a deficit in transfers from these subsidiaries to external parties in location country.

The paper discusses the structural barriers to R&D in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, emerging markets striving to build economies based on innovation and knowledge. In reality research and development in the above countries suffer from some structural faults including: deficiency in R&D investments, ineffective mstructure based on government funding and insufficient engagement of business in financing and implementation of R&D.

The aim of the paper is to determine to what extent the R&D industry in Poland participates in global value chains (GVC), and to determine the place of this industry in these chains. The research tool is the participation in GVC index, being the sum of shares in these chains as a recipient of foreign components used in domestic production (participation index, backward), and as a supplier (producer) of intermediate goods for manufacturing abroad of final products (participation index, forward). The analysis includes latest available data, taken from the EORA (for 2015) and WIOD (for 2014) databases. It has been shown that the R&D industry in Poland participates, but still to a small extent, in the global value chains. Compared to the entire Polish economy, where about half of the exports are carried out under GVC, in the R&D industry this share is about twice lower. A different tendency is also visible in the development the directions of this participation: for the entire Polish economy the share as a recipient of foreign components for domestic production (backward index) clearly prevails over the forward index while in the case of the R&D industry, the backward and forward participation ratios have similar values, and calculations based on EORA even indicate the advantage of forward participation.
