Financial Statement is considered one of the most important sources of information about business. Numerous harmonizations and standardizations have contributed to the unification of accounting principles and financial reporting standards. Unfortunately, more and more often cases of manipulation of financial data through the practice of creative and aggressive accounting are observed. In response to these activities, a new subfield of audit was created - forensic audit. This article deals with the subject of investigative audit that counteracts economic crime. In addition, the issues of creative and aggressive accounting were discussed as well. The main goal of the article is to investigate the degree of recognition and interpretation of phenomena related to creative and aggressive accounting and forensic audit among people professionally involved in accounting and among accounting students. Literature analysis methods and a survey method were used. The questionnaire was addressed to accounting students and people professionally related to accounting or financial auditing. In the process of inference, the methods of deduction and synthesis were used. The obtained results showed that the studied group has a broader knowledge of creative accounting than aggressive and observed such activities more often during their profession. Most of the respondents correctly distinguish these phenomena and classify exemplary activities to the discussed areas of accounting. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that the degree of knowledge is not fully satisfactory, taking into account the characteristics of the respondents. The concept and phenomenon of forensic audit is not widespread and widely recognized. Simultaneously, the profession of auditor is seen as a profession of public trust, and (financial) auditing is considered to be the best preventive measure against financial fraud. The willingness to improve the company's image is indicated among the main causes of fraud. As a result, it can be concluded that the concept of forensic audit is evolving and is slowly appearing in the minds of people associated with accounting, although the state of this development is not significant.

Ponadto omówiono zagadnienia księgowości kreatywnej i agresywnej. W procesie wnioskowania wykorzystano metody dedukcji i syntezy. Wyniki pokazują, że respondenci posiadają szerszą wiedzę na temat rachunkowości kreatywnej niż agresywnej oraz częściej obserwują takie działania podczas wykonywanego zawodu. Większość badanych osób prawidłowo rozróżnia zjawiska księgowości kreatywnej i klasyfikuje przykładowe działania do omawianych obszarów rachunkowości.

Introduction: The article addresses the issue of social crime and the importance of forensic auditing as a tool for identifying and preventing financial misconduct in the public sector. Social crimes are defined as intentional actions aimed at obtaining undue benefits from the social security system, carried out mainly through document forgery, false statements, or the exploitation of loopholes in administrative procedures. The scale of this phenomenon generates significant economic and social losses, while scholarly recognition of the issue in Poland remains limited. Objective: The aim of this article is to present forensic auditing as an effective method of counteracting social crimes. Materials and Methods: To achieve this objective, literature studies and legal analysis – specifically the dogmatic and legal method – were employed. Results: The study demonstrates that forensic auditing, as an interdisciplinary form of control combining elements of accounting, law, and forensic science, constitutes an effective and efficient tool for detecting and analyzing major irregularities. Its essence lies in identifying so-called “red flags” – indicators that may signal fraud – and using analytical methods and modern technologies in the fraud detection process. The author also emphasizes the alignment of audit practices with OECD recommendations on preventing financial fraud. Forensic auditing can play a significant role in reducing social crime, strengthening the transparency of public finances, and building citizens’ trust in state institutions.

The purpose of forensic (investigation) audit is to counteract various types of economic crime, especially to identify fraud and corruption, as well as misappropriation and other financial crime. To this end, not only financial audit methods are used, but forensic ones as well, since financial audit methods do not always identify economic fraud, which comprises all activities against the rules of the economy. These include both misappropriation and activities of organised crime groups. Most common economic fraud types comprise money laundering, accounting fraud, corruption, bid rigging and cybercrime. Forensic audit is mainly focused on identification of misappropriation and fraud. An understanding of the nature of these processes is very important for distinguishing forensic audit from other ways of evaluation of an organisation’s functioning. In accordance with Article 286 of the Criminal Code, a fraud is activity aimed at obtaining material benefits by making another person mismanage their or other people’s property, or by making use of another person’s mistake, or their inability to properly understand their activities. While misappropriation is defined in Article 296 of the Criminal Code, and the perpetrator is a person that – on the basis of legal provisions, decisions by competent authorities, or an agreement to deal with assets of a natural or legal person, or of an organisational entity – deliberately acts to obtain material benefits by abusing their rights, or by neglecting their responsibilities. In their article, the authors present the most important features of forensic audit. At the beginning, they focus on several key issues, e.g. the nature of forensic audit, the basic features of misappropriation, and the main elements of forensic analysis. Later, they discuss selected features of big data, as well as their potential and actual application in forensic audit, next to potential use of artificial intelligence. Several techniques of obtaining information from open data sources and of using this strategy in auditing have been presented.
