Animals are a subject of interest of classical cultural anthropology as part of natural human environment. As such, they are perceived in categories of culture, which, on the one hand, are adaptation to natural conditions, on the other hand ordering system of symbols. On the side of the definition of specific character of humanity, cultural anthropologists undertook the reflection on the subjectivity of animals. Contemporary cultural anthropology, which draws inspirations e.g. from natural science, redefines a place of a human in the natural environment, however does not abolish the boundary between human and non-human animals.

In the history of the cinema there are several surprisingly similar scenes with horses, cows or goats standing or lying in a relaxed fashion on furniture in bourgeois interiors. The most famouscome from "L’Age d’or" (1930) by Luis Buñuel, "Wrong Again" (1929) with Oliver and Hardy and "Moscow Laughs" (other English title: "Jolly Fellows" /1934/) by Grigori Aleksandrov. It seems that the impact and popularity of these lies in the fact that they break the social taboo dealing with the standards of coexistence between humans and animals, which leads to comic situations, but the popularity lies also in the fact that this is a link to the tradition of fairy tales, offering us a gentle detachment from reality.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie działalności stowarzyszenia Catholic Concern for Animals założonej w 1929 r. W 2015 r. liderzy organizacji skierowali do papieża Franciszka apel o dokonanie zmian w Katechizmie Kościoła Katolickiego, podkreślając służebną rolę człowieka wobec świata przyrody i postulując znaczne ograniczenie prowadzenia doświadczeń na zwierzętach.

The purpose of this article is to present the activities of an association Catholic Concern for Animals founded in 1929. It is one of the few organizations working for the protection of animals inspired by the teachings of the Catholic Church. Its members engage in various activities on a variety of platforms, including educational campaigns and protests. Publishing work is also important. The association has been publishing a quarterly “The Ark” since 1937, in which it informs readers about its current operations and publishes articles on animals and their welfare. In 2015 the leaders of the organization addressed an appeal to the Pope Francis, appealing for a change in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, highlighting the role of a man in service of the natural world and postulating a significant reduction of experimentation on animals. It seems that some of these postulates go too far and are not compatible with an integral vision of man and of the world proclaimed by the Church.

Symboliczne znaczenie pewnych zwierząt jest związane w historii idei z różnymi cechami ludzkimi. Autor analizuje starożytne i średniowieczne komentarze do Pisma Świętego w poszukiwaniu teriomorficznych symboli ilustrujących specyficzne cechy kapłaństwa służebnego. Tymi zwierzętami są: koń, pies, baran, wół, krowa, lew, jeleń, łania, koziorożec, szarańcza, kogut.

The article presents some threads of interesting philosophical and ethical analyses by Robert Spaemann on the animal world, undertaken by him in the Aristotelian spirit. They concern issues that seem to be of particular interest to both: experts on the subject and contemporary man. These are: nature (its specificity) and the ontic status of animals, suffering and its sources (including experiments and training), killing animals and eating their flesh. Spaemann not only did not question, but also, in the spirit of classical and contemporary thought (Helmuth Plessner), originally emphasised the essence of man over animals. He did it, among others, by emphasising the human ability to self-relativizing. According to the eminent German thinker, the ethical principles regulating our relationship to animals are closely related to the metaphysical understanding of their being. These principles are based on the teleological nature of our smaller brothers and the subjective form of their existence. Spaemann emphasised the role of kindness, responsibility and care, the utilitarian principle of the profit and loss account, Kant’s categorical imperative and the personalistic norm. On the other hand, he developed the obligation to protect animals and responsible for them in the context of human dignity. The article attempts to show the importance of the teleological perspective, which no one has shown so clearly and convincingly in relation to animals in contemporary German philosophy. The article also compared his position on the animal world with the vision of Peter Singer. First of all, the article attempts to reconstruct Spaemann’s thought on the ethical and metaphysical aspects of man’s relationship to animals.

Czynił to m.in. przez zaakcentowanie zdolności człowieka do samorelatywizacji. Przede wszystkim w artykule podjęto próbę rekonstrukcji Spaemanna myśli dotyczącej etycznych i metafizycznych aspektów stosunku człowieka do zwierząt.

In the present review, an attempt to define the animal kingdom against a background of other kingdoms in the domain of eukaryotic organisms is presented, showing the common features linking the animal kingdom with the kingdom of fungi. The animals were clearly separated from other kingdoms through two unique systemscharacteristic of them: nervous and muscular. The matter is complicated by the fact that in the four types of the animal kingdom (Porifera, Placozoa) the nervous and muscular systems are absent. Therefore, zoologists proposed the name Metazoa multicellularanimal – for the animal kingdom. The main problematic issues of monophyly based onselected phylogenetic groups and phyla are discussed. In addition to the phylogenetictree (based on monophyly) the punctuated equilibrium was established for four independentgroups: Porifera, Cnidaria, Protostomia, Deuterostomia. Finally, the position ofthe animal kingdom in the monophyletic point of view and against a background of all other organisms is presented.

W artykule przedstawiono specyfikę i problemy ewakuacji zwierząt w sytuacji zagrożenia.

The article addresses the specificity and issues related to the evacuation of animals in an emergency situation. The author focused on the basic undertaking which is planning the evacuation of animals, mainly from large objects such as ZOOs, farms or studs. The article presents proposals for structures of evacuation teams, their competences and procedures. The attention was paid to the effectiveness of evacuation taking into account time relations, including distance during the occurrence of an event. The author indicates important parts of the planning, namely the development of the right documentation and the verification carried out in terms of the feasibility of the implementation of the projects assumed in the plan. The article describes the structure concept of evacuation plans of animals from a large facility.

The study examines and presents veterinary and legal (including canonical) aspects of livestock in the benefice institutions. Selected features of the legal status of animals in the beneficiary property of the parish priest, in the land of the diocese of Tarnów (Poland) were examined and described. In the period 1918–1939 in Poland, the parish benefice was, both from the factual and legal point of view, an important component of the exercise of RC offices, with animals being one of the most important – though not unproblematic – elements of the living. It was revealed, that these problems provided a basis for adopting synodal resolutions at the local, national and common levels, which focused on the concept of proper agricultural and economic use of animals as the farm components.

Zwierzę w filozofii moralności

The discussion about the rights of animals is always up-to-date. The dichotomy division into philoanimalists and philohominists, although reasonable, is not satisfactory to everyone. It is too strongly associated with the division into people and things in Roman law. To avoid this association in the context of biocentric trends in ecological ethics, accomplishments of evolutionary psychology and the concept of animal welfare, it is suggested that a third moral dimension dealing with creatures with highly developed nervous system be introduced between moral objectivity of creatures with high perception and moral subjectivity of people - creatures characterized by self-awareness and reflexive awareness. Human beings on the one hand are responsible for recognizing their rights given by nature and on the other hand, they are obliged to create a law to protect themselves.

Transformation is Not a Return. A Reading of a Poem by Witold Wirpsza (and of All Other Polish Postsecular Poems)While challenging the common view which sees postsecularism as a return to religion, this paper is an attempt to apply the main tenets of the postsecular thought to the literary criticism accompanying the Polish literature. After a brief presentation of  several Polish poets whose works meet the proposed criteria of postsecularism (T. Karpowicz, K. Miłobędzka, S. Barańczak and W. Wirpsza), the author sets forth the argument that it is the linguistic aspect of the poems that lets us read them as postsecular. The main part of the paper is a critical reading of Witold Wirpsza’s 1971 poem “Powrót w zamęcie” (“A Return in Confusion”) which is interpreted as, on the one hand, an illustration of the idea of the society being forced into secularisation and, on the other hand, an effect of an intertextual play with Jan Kochanowski’s “Hymn.” Both aspects are crucial in identifying the postsecular rhetoric of the poem as they involve an unorthodox rendering of theological motifs and structures (making it possible to approach them from the perspectives of animal studies and animal theology), the idea of the artistic potential of blasphemy, and the proposition of the vital role of the “linguistic moment” (J. Hillis Miller) in the extra-linguistic interpretation of poetic texts.

Thesis of the judgment: The relationship that may arise between a human and an animal does not constitute a personal interest as defined in Article 23 of the [Polish] Civil Code and, consequently, the violation of human welfare due to death of an animal is not subject to protection under Article 23 et seq. of the Civil Code, even if death of an animal is the result of an unlawful act of another entity. The decision of the Court of Appeal deserves criticism. The bond with an animal deserves protection as a personal interest, because the catalog of legally protected personal interests remains open, while the bond with an animal is an intangible, natural emanation of human personality and it has been recognized as a value by the society as a whole. Therefore it deserves protection under Articles 23–24 of the Civil Code.

Summary In this article the author is trying to find the similarities between Holocaust and animals’ situation in a cruel world. The author analyses and interpretates novel Beatrycze i Wergili written by Martel. In this story, the protagonists of narrator’s play are animals (donkey and monkey), who like Jewish society during Second World War, live in cages (similar to ghetto). They are treated as objects. Moreover, they are victims of violence. They have to deal with fear, insecurity (features typical for trauma). After they escaped, they tried to understand what had happened to them.

Wykorzystanie metodologii z obszaru human-animal studies w badaniu gatunku science fiction pozwoliło na przeanalizowanie tekstu pisarza w kontekście najnowszych badań z zakresu ekoliteratury i bioetyki.

The literary works of Sever Gansovsky are an excellent example of modern eco-literature. For many years, the writer worked with the genre of eco-science fiction, which is engaged into the study of the nature of human existence and the interaction of humans with non-human animals. The methods of Human-Animal Studies, applied to science fiction works, allowed us to analyze the writer’s novels in the context of the latest research in eco-literature and bioethics. The object of this study is the novel Little Animal, written in 1969. The novel tells a story of a small boy who is particularly cruel to animals. Little Animal represents the creation of a man as an exponent of a new eco-culture. The novel shows the formation of a new cognitive model of the world, in whichanimals are playing a mediating role between the man and the nature that is beyond the limits of human experience.

Poaching in the Second Polish Republic was a serious problem that was never quite resolved. In 1918–1939, it was actively fought against by the police, forest guards and hunters. Poachers were dangerous and unpredictable people; they often killed hunters and foresters, they did not hesitate to fire at policemen. In interwar Poland poaching was a real threat to species, even to common animals.

The bonds of solidarity connect not only people with each other, but also animals. An example of this is Orwell’s Animal Farm, which is assigned as a schoolbook, rooted in the tradition of Aesop’s fable. However, this is not only a phenomenon characteristic for literary fantasy, as it is confirmed in the research of naturalists and sociologists (animal as Other). The article provides an overview of works that illustrate the attitude of solidarity in the animal world and animals with people, both fantastic and realistic, for children and adults, which are either on school reading lists or could be included there. Not only foreign-language writers, such as the Brothers Grimm, Kipling, Lagerlȍf, Lofting, Chukovsky, Bonsels, Adams, Atkinson, but also Polish ones, such as Dygasiński, Reymont, Brzechwa, Żukrowski. This also applies to memoir prose about childhood, whose didactic sense is no less valuable.

Hunting and ReligionOn the Religious Significance of Hunting Practices from the Perspective of Animal Studies The main aim of the article is to consider the presence and function of religion (in most cases, the Christian religion) in the broadly conceived hunting practices at the turn of the 21st century, as well as the presence of religious motivation and ideological commitment in the hunters’ community from the perspective of religious studies inspired by the empirical research into the human-animal relationship (known as animal studies). The hunting narrative is shown, on the one hand, as eagerly seeking legitimacy and support from institutional religion (evidenced by the patron saints of hunting, the hunting ceremonial that has close parallels in the church ceremonial, and the argument in favour of “ecological balance” and “nature management” based on theological sources) and, on the other hand, as disguising an unethical and religiously unacceptable element of the arbitrary taking of life and inflicting pain without a shadow of empathy or without respecting the right to existence of what is a vulnerable being, even more so because it is devoid of human tools and rationality. The author’s examination of the issues leads to the discussion of the hunters’ religious mythologizing of their own status which draws on the ancient origin of hunting practices in prehistoric times: a period when the human-animal relationship was not yet marked by dualistic division and ontological asymmetry. The paper ultimately aims at the analysis of the way hunting is presented in religious studies research, of the difference between the implications of hunting activities for the human-animal relationship in premodern tribal communities (which practised subsistence hunting) and contemporary industrialized ones, and of the possibility of granting religious subjecthood to animals which stems from the return to the non-dichotomous, relational and dynamic view of the world typical of hunter-gatherers’ times.
